Hunger is a shocking book. I never believed that hype till I read it. I think the shocking aspect is the truth, the brutal connection with hunger, not I'm hungry for lunch, but I am hungry beyond feeding, I am hungry in my soul, brutally so, my hunger has travelled into my cells, food just mocks the pain that hunger has ignited in the heart and will never let it go. We are all damned once we think of our existence and we can never give that back.

I was quite affected by it when I read it many years ago.

Of course it is a lot about pride and shame as well as about hunger itself.

I read this book 20 plus years ago as preparation for a trip to Norway - not my only preparation, BTW. Very powerful book. It reminded me of George Orwell's "Down and Out in Paris and London".

It's some of the best writing I've ever seen and I am still affected by it.

It is a book I won't reread 'cause it scares me so much. Brilliant, and tooo true. I've only been really hungry on this scale twice in my life. It will certainly reset your scale of values.
