Can't help but be disappointed in the lack of posts in this group. Would love to know more readers from around the Wilson area.

Amylynnd, sorry not from Wilson area; from the Forsyth County area! I have several good NC books. You might like The Lost Rights; a true story about North Carolina's copy of the Bill of Rights.

Just discovered the group tonight. I'm not near either of you, but travel all over the state.

Probably true. I wish it were doing more good, frankly.

Big money drowns out all else. If I didn't have to hold down a job I'd be down there with them.

Greensboro here. Doing lots of reading but not much specific to NC. Just finished Gone Girl and it was excellent. Now reading Every Last One, by Anna Quindlen, whom I can always count on to tell a good story. (And a bit embarrassed by my state these days, as it seems others here are.)

I'm from Germanton (north of Winston-Salem). Recently finished 'Velva Jean Learns to Fly' by Jennifer Niven (sequel to 'Velva Jean Learns to Drive') both really good and set in NC. And I am in agreement abut the shame our state is bringing on us...

I'm still proud of the ole North State; ie. Mountains, Piedmont and Coastal Plains all in one state. We have a unique situation here in NC, we can experience many things, many places, many histories, many cultures and a great variety of peoples in NC. How lucky we are that we also have urban areas ( Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro), rural settings in all type of land structures. NC is home to great colleges and universities ( Wake Forest, NC State, WS State, UNC Charlotte, Salem College etc.) We have a great Community College system in NC that helps many students find future employment opportunities. We have all four seasons and none of them are too extreme! I especially love the Mountains in the springtime and the coast in the fall. Our summers can become somewhat muggy with our high humidity, but, it never lasts too long. I am very proud of my home state and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. By the way, we have good authors and great bookstores and libraries!

>14 JaneAustenNut: I totally agree with all you say. We have so many great writers here, and my book club has been focusing on North Carolina writers and books. We never run out of choices.

I've lived in a number of states and in NC three different times. I moved back this last time in 2000.
I love NC and the South! One of my travel goals is to visit every one of the 100 counties in NC. . .

I'm in Charlotte. We have several colleges and universities, a few favorite used bookstores, one great indepndent book store - Park Road Books. Also a good library system, art museums, theater and symphony. Oh, and we have Lake Norman. We're also 2 hrs from the mountains and 4 from some of the best beaches anywhere!

I'm a big fan of Southern literature and books by NC authors and books set in NC.

>17 nrmay: One of my travel goals is to visit every one of the 100 counties in NC...

Me too!!! I thought this was an insane vacation idea, since I always get crazy looks from people when I say that's going to be my vacation one year.... I want to see one attraction in each county, no matter how big.

Have you ever been on a random drive, where you just pull directions out of a hat and see where it takes you? Those are the BEST in North Carolina. When you get to the highway you pull numbers and see what exit you get off... We once ended up near the zoo, but our random directions took us past it to the covered bridge and all the pottery stores there. It was an amazing afternoon.

I've not done the random drive but I love back roads and scenic byways! And I adore interesting place names like Whynot, NC and Comfort, NC and Harmony, NC and Love Valley, NC.
I want to visit Swan Quarter, NC and Mt. Olive and the Great Dismal Swamp!

I've been to Seagrove and the potteries many times; my house is full of pottery. I love that stuff. I often give it away as gifts so I can go back and buy more. My house décor is books, cats, and pottery,

I have not been to Lizard Lick NC but I found it on the map and I'd visit just for the name! Have you been there? Anything interesting in Lizard Lick?
Anyone been to Welcome NC or Nebraska NC? Other great NC places I should visit? I just added another NC back roads book to my collection...

Just finished The Road from Gap Creek (ARC) and found it to be a wonderful book that is primarily about characters and locations from NC. Robert Morgan has done a great job and I would recommend it to everyone. It was almost like a memoir of my families history from the early 20th century.

>nrmay; I live in the general vicinity of Welcome NC, it is a great small town feel; the biggest thing there is the Richard Childress Racing facilities. PS, they also have a great little BBQ place to eat.

>20 nrmay: Do you watch NC Weekend on PBS? We have learned of a LOT of places by watching that show! They do some of the usual tourist places, but then they do local places too. We keep a travel book with everything organized by location so that if we're "in the area" of someplace we want to see or eat at, we can just drop in.

> 27 fuzzi; Sorry, just saw post and trying to catch up. The BBQ in and around the Lexington area ( Welcome, NC ) and the Winston-Salem area has what is called the Lexington style of BBQ. It is tomato based and not vinegar based. They are two distinct styles and I like both kinds. Of course, we mostly get the Lexington style of BBQ near us, but, I do like the eastern style of vinegar based BBQ.

I LOVE NC BBQ, both Lexington style and Eastern vinegar base.

If you're in Charlotte, my favorite BBQ places are -

Midwood BBQ in Plaza Midwood neighborhood
Sauceman's BBQ, no-frills joint on West Blvd
Mac's Speed Shop, Beers/Bikes/BBQ on South Blvd

In Asheboro, in case you're going to the zoo, try -

Hop's BBQ, same spot downtown on Sunset Av for more than 50 years! Great antique mall across the street.
Henry James BBQ on S Fayetteville St; their peach cobbler is also great!

Parker's BBQ is what I like in Greenville.

Some people prefer B's BBQ, but it is a little too spicy for me.

Hi! I just heard about this site and thought I would check it out. So far I am liking it. I love all things books! I live in a small town east of Charlotte, called Albemarle. Anyone happen to live within an hour's drive of here or Charlotte? I would love to join a local book club.

If you're willing to come into Charlotte, the bookstores here have book clubs. I tend to go to the Barnes and Noble at Arboretum (which is South Charlotte) for their Wednesday 11 am group but I know Park Road Books has some wonderful groups too. My daughter used to go to a dance competition in Albemarle but I don't remember how long it took me or whether you'd potentially be closer to Davidson that Charlotte proper. If so, I bet Main Street Books in Davidson has wonderful groups too.
