Half the year is over and we are a bit behind toward reaching our group goal. Any members who signed up with a personal goal and have yet to read one ROOT, have been removed from the general totals to a separate list. The group tickers have been adjusted to reflect this change.
So, let's keep these tickers (password ROOT) moving with everyone adding their progress to the comprehensive goal for all of us. We need to have a total of 3,136 (58%) by the end of JULY to stay on track. We can do it!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The ticker thread (http://www.librarything.com/topic/148710) is a
huge help in crunching the end of month numbers so if you haven't already posted your ticker there, please do! if there is a * by your name, it indicates there is a ticker on your thread but not on the ticker thread and a & indicates no ticker. This just tells me where I need to go to get the numbers that are not on the ticker thread. I try to keep up on the personal threads during the month, so having to revisit to gather numbers can be a bit time consuming if the system is slow. Any help is appreciated. So if you have a ticker made already, please think about copying the HTML to the ticker thread.
Thanks for your help!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, now, Ladies and Gentlemen, BOOKLOVERS - get back out there and read those BOOKS! LETS MAKE A BIG PUSH THIS MONTH!
Here are the individual numbers so far. Please let me know if I need to update anyone. I had a few personal threads I couldn't locate for those not on the ticker thread, so I think I need to find them.

Sorry, my total should be 25, not 29.
Cheli, I'm obviously doing something wrong because each month I have to issue a correction. What should I be doing which I'm not, or what am I doing which I shouldn't be?

I just added two to my total this week but they don't show on your list yet. My total is now 25 (not 23). Maybe the last one was added after midnight your time, I'm on Pacific Time.
Happy July 4th! But first, Canada Day is July 1st.

Hi Cheli, I couldn't seem to update my personal ticker until this morning. Something about the tablet I use at home doesn't work for me. My YTD total is 64.
I see that I most likely won't reach my ambitious goal, but I will try my best and see what happens.

Well - congratulations to all that have finished already! I finished a couple over the weekend, but I knew Cheli was updating so I just figured I'd hold them out till this week. Will update later today.

I just finished Specimen Days by Michael Cunningham- book number 26
12Luisali
I finished between the last days of June and the beginning of July three books: Typhoon, one of my oldest roots, The Wrath of Angels, a masterful story of new and ancient foes, and Il metodo del coccodrillo , a run of the mill detective story. Tickers updated.
Happy July 4th!

I'm actually at 55, not 54. I had one more finished for June that got added to the ticker late, due to me being away on vacation.
14cyderry
Okay, I think I have the June totals corrected and the tickers synchronized. Whew!
2>>Robert, I think my problem is that you start counting mid year and I never can remember where I left off for the previous month as well as non-ROOT vs. ROOT. It would be helpful if you marked an alternate number for the year (#89 -ROOT#55) or a ticker for the ROOTs. But I don't mind making adjustments - God knows I am nowhere close to perfect!

One more for me before I slow down with some longer reads: Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. Tickers updated.

he was the brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe. He was one of several famous "Beecher Preachers" in the Boston area, and was a famous ordained minister. He was also an ardent abolitionist. He was known to be very charismatic and the ladies in particular loved him. The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher by Debby Applegate is the most recent biography of him. There is also a famous YA and children's biography called Harriet Beecher Stowe and the Beecher Preachers by the equally famous children's biographer Jean Fritz. Beecher was friends with the authors from Concord, MA. People like Hawthorne and the Alcott family.

By all accounts he did get around, did ole' Henry.
A colleague of mine read that biography of him and said that it was very good. Of course, she is interested in all things Transcendentalist and in that period of time in Concord.

I'm not rooting very well this month. I've only done one, though I have two started -- 1 fiction, 1 non-fiction. I seem to be taking my time getting through them.
40HelenBaker
3rd Root for the month completed. Off to update tickers.
41SqueakyChu
I am doing very poorly on my ROOTS challenge, but I've found a tool to help me.
I'm using the new Home Page Module "Your Library Over Time". I have it set to my "To Read" collection with a graph of only 1 month. That puts a big blue "blob-ish" *picture* of the number of my "To Read" books in front of my face each time I start LT from my Home Page (which I'm now trying to do).
I hope this idea helps me and others. So far, it seems to be working a bit better for me than just the ticker.

Finally got another ROOT done: Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I read it on our holiday in London, which seemed appropriate. Great vacation, by the way, but obviously it added a number of new books to the TBR pile:
Some Austen novels, a couple of other novels, introductions to Westminster Abbey and St. Pauls Cathedral, a catalogue from the Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum exhibition in British Museum - if you get a chance to see before it closes in september you should absolutely do it - and a monography on J.W. Turner and his paintings - you should definitely see the Turner-exhibition at Tate Britain as well.

Another Root finished, that's 4 so far this month. Off to choose the next one, might make it one of the heavier tomes as it is a holiday week and after settling mother-in-law into a resthome can relax a little...

#49 oooooo, I own In the Woods sounds like I need to pull it off my shelf and read it soon.

41>> Madeline, that's a great idea however, I think that it is going to be rather depressing for me personally because I set mine to show my unread books and I think that graph is going to be going up rather than down. But I'm going to set with it. Thanks for the tip!

A second ROOT finished in July...Pylon, by William Faulkner. Not one of his best efforts, in my opinion. If I weren't such a fanatic about his work, I'd remove it from my library and make a space for something else. Updated my ticker, and posted a review on the book page.

My ticker is up-to-date, but I'm hoping to get one more book finished before the end of the day, if this happens I will up-date my ticker as soon as possible - as I'm in the UK I should get this done before you do your whip through!
Edited to say that I didn't manage to finish the book in time for the end of the month, but it count towards August when its finished.

Finished another book last night making it 5 this month and taking my tally to 32/50. Tickers updated.

After a couple month break, I am back to report a year to date total of 12 ROOTS. I have not touched the ticker.
I am a little behind, but hope to start catching up here in the third quarter. (Although I did not make much progress in July. HA!)

Two more Roots: Heart of Steel - a steampunk adventure and romance with well done female characters - and Suite française: a true masterpiece. All tickers updated.

I just joined ROOT, so my brand new ticker is at 0 for a reason! I'll soon be up to 1 though :-)

>71 Robertgreaves: Edmund Crispin! Hadn't thought of him since I read him as a kid. My mum was a big fan of English murder mysteries. Thanks for the reminder.

Still trying to finish one last book today...will update my ticker when I'm done!

Though I did not finish any books in July, I discarded two which brings me to 11 of 20.
(My second challenge of reading more books off the shelf than bringing on to it is therefore at 2 positive. Meaning so far this year I've read two more books off the shelves than I added on to them. Yeah)

>41 SqueakyChu: I really like this idea, and I've tailored it to my own needs. I just went through my library and added to my 'to read' list all the books that I would like to reread -- I have a lot of books that I read so long ago, it's almost as if I never read them. It has given me a new incentive to just read off my own shelves.

I don't have a ticker, and don't touch the group ticker, but here are my stats as of the end of July, for whoever does the updating:
edgewood 21 / 50 42%
I find it interesting that my personal status matches the group's 42.1%.

I finished 2 more ROOTs this month, for a grand total of 14 out of 20. I have updated my personal ticker but haven't touched any group tickers.

I read 5 ROOTs in the month of July and have updated both my ticker & the group ticker.

>78 ipsoivan: I loved Edmund Crispin when I was a teenager. I desperately wanted to be Gervase Fen when I grew up.

I finished 3 ROOT books in July. I did not update any tickers or do any stats.

I can't believe I actually read 7 books from my TBR pile in July! That brings my total to 23 - just one short of my goal. I have updated the tickers.
