Oh, dear. My library has grown too big to go without call numbers on spines. It needs to be taken care of soon, and fairly cheaply. I have a Dymo label maker that I was planning on using. Upon consideration, I have to wonder: how damaging will that be? How quickly will the adhesive soak through the label if I use plastic labels? What about their paper labels? Will using book tape to cover the labels help? My books aren't terribly valuable, but I don't want to put labels on only to have the books ruined in 5-10 years.

I have been using the newer DYMO labels since about 2000. I just tried to pull a plastic one of the new variety off a paper book jacket. It came off cleanly (leaving a darker rectangle that hadn't seen the light for several years). I then pushed the label back on and it sticks again. I purchased that book in 2001, which is probably when the label was put on. The labels that were white when put on are now 'ivory', but otherwise in good condition. They are stiff enough to make problems if the book is thinner than the label.

I now use the paper labels. A paper one (probably 2003) ripped a bit in coming off. More hassle, but it also came off cleanly in the end, and will still stick except for the corner that was already loose. The paper ones do not seem to have yellowed as much. The excess on thin books will either stick around the corner, or wear off eventually. I wouldn't bother with tape over the labels unless your books are lent out frequently. That stuff can be hard to remove, and the labels are stable on the shelf without it. (I do have the shelf number also inside the front cover in case the label should come off or be damaged.)

(I've had the old DYMO plastic labels on my books for at least 20 years. Sometimes they come off themselves, sometimes they damage the spines if I want to take them off. It depends a lot on the material. These are the ones that were embossed. I don't regret using them, but they were never really satisfactory. This is rather beside the point, as I don't think the old plastic is available.)

Wonderful; thanks!

Does anyone else have experience with these labels?
