Has anyone read any interesting Canadian biographies lately - any area? I just finished two that have some interesting cross-over. In My Own Name by Maureen McTeer was published in 2002 and was a real education for me. I knew she was a lawyer and I thought she was in practice in Ottawa, but no she never practiced. Rather she has used her knowledge of the law to work for women's and children's rights internationally and also for science and reproductive rights. A very interesting woman.
The other book I read was Washington Diaries by Allan Gotlieb. He was the Canadian ambassador to Washington for most of the 1980's, during the free trade debate, acid rain issue etc. He gave me a new respect for the work of diplomats. The cross over is his view of Joe Clark as Minister of Foreign Affairs - Joe Clark being the husband of Maureen McTeer.

Although I haven't read it yet, Growing Pains: The Autobiography of Emily Carr is on my reading list. I've heard good things about this book and Carr's life and work have always deeply interested me.

I can highly recommend Wondrous, Strange : the life and art of Glenn Gould which is an entertaining and readable account of both Gould's life and the time he grew up in.
