Inspired by Garzo's Syriac group, I'd like to create a place for fans of Coptic, in all of its dialects (Sahidic, Bohairic, Faiyumic, Achmimic, Subachmimic, Mesokemic, or mixed) and history. People interested in learning Coptic are warmly welcomed, as well.

I first encountered Coptic through New Testament scholarship when I wondered what some of the more obscure notes in the textual apparatus were. I've read some Nag Hammadi (Gnostic) texts, I would like to read St. Shenoute's sermons, also.

My interest isn't in promoting any particular religion: I simply love old things (and I have a secret, evil plot to create more Coptic scholars. ;)

Thanks for the invite. I studied Coptic for a few years and really enjoyed it. I haven't touched it in a long time but I still have my handy Crum and I know how to use it in a pinch. Looking forward to reading the comments here.

I hope this group will revive your interest -- what got you interested in Coptic?

Gospel of Thomas. I got the Coptic text, and being a young undergrad said, "Hey, this is short, maybe I can learn to read some of this." And I did, which was very useful. I'm not sure I will ever really return to it, although I have been tempted once or twice to make a deeper study of "Thunder, Perfect Mind."

Thanks Kushana for starting this group. My interest in Coptic started where many people's did - I wanted to read the Gospel of Thomas. It is now one of my more important scholarly interests.
