I read this book in the early nineties, but it seemed like it was published sometime during the eighties. It's about a boy who befriends a group of ghosts and who helps them out. I *think* the main conflict is that the building the ghosts are currently inhabiting is going to be torn down, and they need a new place to haunt, preferably somewhere permanent.

I remember a scene set in the school's gym room, with ghosts hanging from the wall bars. I recall the boy having a particular distaste for wall bar exercises -- perhaps because he was bullied there (tied to the wall bars? cruel gym teacher assigning him extra exercises?).

It was the book where I first came across the word "ectoplasm", because that was what the ghosts were made of.

The end might have involved a castle or a mansion on a hill that ended up serving as the ghosts' new home.

I've tried google books' advanced search for the terms wall bars and ectoplasm, but nothing from the appropriate time range turns up.

Might it be The Great Ghost Rescue by Eva Ibbotson? She has written a number of somewhat-lighthearted children's/YA books about ghosts, and this was the only that fits into the 80s timeframe (actually in 1975).

Yes! that's exactly it!

Reviews mention ghosts changing their foul smell to suit their mood, headless ghosts and a screaming skull -- all of those spark memories of the same book.

Thanks a bunch, sparemethecensor!

No problem! So glad I could help.

I read Ibbotson's Dial a Ghost as a teenager and remembered she had other, similar works.
