September - 3/4 through the year- and we're a bit behind of our target with 72% for the end of month. We need to hunker down and clear those books from our shelves and get the fireworks popping! The tickers (password BOMBS) are set so everyone can add their to the totals.

Äänestys: Should we continue the "BOMBS" Challenge again next year

Sorry for the "answer answerless." I didn't mind the BOMBS theme, but so many people did, that it might be more comfy to go back to a less violent theme.

Here I am for this month and hoping to get more read than last month. I'm thinking that next year is going to be extremely busy so I might just keep another ticker over in the 13 in 13 challenge and do everything in one place. Or be very limited over here.

#8 ramblinivy: Ther is also the group Book of your Bookshelves here on LT, that is running on for several years now. This group developed out of that one.

11moonshineandrosefire
Muokkaaja: marraskuu 1, 2012, 9:47 am

I hope that the challenge will continue next year as well - I'm with ramblingivy as regards needing the motivation, cyderry! :) The 'BOMBS' theme worked well for me, so if we keep it for next year, I wouldn't mind. If we change it, I wouldn't mind either.

Here I am with my ticker for the month of October. So far, I have read 10 books in October (as of October 31, 2012). I want to read 90 books in 2012. (I reached my goal of 90 books read on October 23, 2012!) I think I'll add 10 more books - New Goal: 100 Books Read in 2012!

"I didn't mind the BOMBS theme, but so many people did

I have a couple of ideas for a different theme for next year if people prefer that and I don't think they'd be objectionable.
Once we figure out if we want a new theme or not, I'll put it to a vote for a new one if that's decided.

16benitastrnad
lokakuu 1, 2012, 2:07 pm

I didn't mind the theme and like the idea of the group trying to get old stuff off the shelves. I for one want to trumpet to the world that I finally read a book I purchased back in about 1980. Presidential Anecdotes bit the dust and I can now pass it on to some other reader. I think I would have eventually read it, but having this group motivates me to pick up those old books.

October: for those in the nothern hemisphere, the beginning of "books, tea, and cozy sweater/jumper" season. Of course, here in central California, it's going to be near 100F today. Go figure.

Personal thread is here.

Edited to add:
End of month report: 44/50. Both group tickers updated.

18DeltaQueen50
lokakuu 1, 2012, 3:12 pm

#16 - Benita, reading a book that has been on your shelf since 1980 is a tremendous achievement. Congratulations.

I am very happy with this group continuing under whatever theme we choose. This challenge definitely helps me focus some of my attention on reading books off my shelves which I certainly need, if only to find places for all my new books to fit.

I have checked my figures at the top and they are accurate to the end of September.

Here is my ticker, ready to start on October's Bombs:

19majkia
lokakuu 1, 2012, 3:19 pm

I should mention I'll be happy if the group continues, with whatever we call it. Since Im retired Air Force and live near a bombing range, I'm okay with the theme ;)

20clue
lokakuu 1, 2012, 3:40 pm

I also hope the challenge continues, I really enjoy it and it helps me focus on at least a portion of my TBR every year. Any theme is fine with me.

Do we really need to start a new group each year? (Not a disinterested question -- my main threads run from birthday to birthday.)

23cyderry
lokakuu 1, 2012, 8:14 pm

The group now is (BOMBS) Books Off My Book Shelves 2012 Challenge.
Many people, myself included, start each year fresh with their challenges. That's why I asked about the theme. I'm, sorry if that would be a problem.

24HelenBaker
lokakuu 2, 2012, 2:56 am

Here for October. I too am happy with my progress in this challenge. I have gone from 10 last year hoping to achieve 50 this year. I think a fresh theme for next year.

25Booksloth
lokakuu 2, 2012, 7:50 am

#23 I'm not sure exactly what you mean by a new theme - can you give some examples? Of course, there's nothing wrong with setting up new and additional challenges but this one does seem to be very popular (and it took me three years to achieve my goal so it's one to keep trying at).

26deadwhiteguys
lokakuu 2, 2012, 8:48 am

Another one bites the dust:

The Twelve by Justin Cronin

27connie53
lokakuu 2, 2012, 11:08 am

Do people really were against the BOMBS theme, of just objected to the name?
I really like the idea of reading all those books that were on the shelve for so long. So change the name! But keep the goal.

28cyderry
lokakuu 2, 2012, 6:35 pm

It would work the same way as BOMBS, just a different name.

Here are the 3 that I've been thinking about:
(SPACE) Shelves Pleasingly Accessible - Cleared by Exploration
The Final Frontier -These are the Voyages of the LT readers. Their 1 year mission for 2013 is to seek out old, unread books and read them. Boldly going where that reader has never gone before. (kind of a Star Trek pun)

(ROSES) Read Off the Shelves - Expanding Space

Every reader knows when they step into a book store or library, that special smell, of ink and paper. As beautiful to a booklover as a dozen roses is to a gardener. Some of us have that at home with shelves that have books that have been sitting for much too long and need to be cleared. Clip the ROSES before the petals start to wilt.

(BRUSHES) Bibliophiles Rejoice Uncluttering their SHelves - Expanding their Space(This could be Booklovers or Bibliophiles)

Each year we attempt to make more space on our shelves by cleaning them off and reading the books that have been accumulating over time. Now with BRUSHES we can sweep off the old and make room for the new.
Like I said, same idea doing exactly the same process, just different imagery. Some people thought the BOMBS were too violent.

29Robertgreaves
lokakuu 2, 2012, 7:58 pm

Love the Star Trek one.

30Booksloth
lokakuu 2, 2012, 8:21 pm

31fundevogel

33benitastrnad
lokakuu 3, 2012, 6:44 pm

All the acronyms are clever! I like them all, and as long as the idea is to get rid of stuff off my shelves and help keep me from buying more, I don't really care which of that lovely trio is chosen.

34majkia
lokakuu 3, 2012, 7:11 pm

I finished 3 BOMBS in September. That means I have reached and exceeded the goal I set for myself. I have updated the group tickers, and will gladly read on to help the group reach its goal.
Because the number of books on my TBR shelf does not seem to be shrinking, I am interested in attempting the challenge again next year, under any name you choose.

44Tallulah_Rose
lokakuu 6, 2012, 9:42 am

*sigh* Although I could put off 2 more books this month, I added 6 today because we came across a library book sale. That means I have added one more book to the shelves thanread of them and I really get the feeling that I will fail this part of my challenge this year. Let's hope that I'll finish some more (old or new) books this year!

That's why I have been making a concerted effort to read some of the older books I have in my collection. It simply is time to get them off of my shelves before they get so dated as to outdated.

49streamsong

I love the ROSES acronym, too, but I am wondering if is it too girly for any males in the group.

As long as the challenge stays I am ok with any of the names although i really like the Star Trek idea. Keep the challenge though I NEED YOU GUYS to get me through all these books. Oh, and by the way, I'm starting on a paranormal theme for October if anyone has any suggestions or wants to join in.

Do I need to inform you if I want to update my total of books donated or purged, cyderry? That's what I mean. Do you need to adjust any group totals at all? :) If you are able to update any group totals at all, cyderry, I think I may try for a total of 100 books donated or purged in 2012 (since I've already gotten 70 books off my bookshelves, it shouldn't be too difficult for me to donate or purge 30 more books by the end of the year!) I hope that that doesn't throw off the group total at all, cyderry? :)

Rose, you have two options,
1. you can stick with your original goal and continue on with the challenge helping us all reach the group goal (no changes would need to be made) or
2. you can increase your goal and increase the group goal. If you increase your goal, just let me know what your new goal will be and I'll adjust the Tickers and monthly goal.

Congratulations on your success so far and we're behind you whatever your decision is.

64moonshineandrosefire
lokakuu 10, 2012, 9:43 pm

I apologize if it potentially throws off the group total for everyone, but I would definitely like to try to donate or purge another 30 books by the end of the year. I hope that my decision doesn't increase the group or individual totals by too much. :)

66Tallulah_Rose

Rosefireandmoonshine, don't apologize! We all stand behind you and your achievements so far. Don't worry, it won't mess up any individual goals, just our group goal will be increased by your 30 books - and if you reach them everything is fine! :-) Even if you don't accomplish your new goal - but I really am positive you will reach it - nobody'll be mad about it. This is supposed to be fun, after all ;-)

67cyderry

we just want the process to be as painless as possible. We all got these books for some reason back when they were new... we need to rediscover the reason and enjoy the journey.

I am enjoying the journey, everyone, thank you! :) I have always been a major rereader of books, but so far, this year's challenge has led me to read new books and new authors that I had no idea I owned in my collection! :) Plus, I've only reread a total of 14 books so far in 2012, as opposed to rereading maybe 25 or 35 books or so all together for the year. I'm having so much fun with this challenge! :)

I quite recently joined the group and am looking forward to taking part (not just lurking) in 2013.
Despite not taking part of the challenge this year I'd like to vote for SPACE being the new name/theme for the group in 2013.
Not only do I love astronomy and would therefore vote for anything space-related, but I think the acronym works perfectly with the whole idea of the group - to make space on the shelves.

77majkia
lokakuu 13, 2012, 9:56 am

#76 - what makes up the acronym? As an inveterate space junky myself, I love the idea.

78PawsforThought
lokakuu 13, 2012, 10:33 am

->77 majkia: It was cyderry's idea - I'm taking no credit for it.

I quote: "(SPACE) Shelves Pleasingly Accessible - Cleared by Exploration
The Final Frontier -These are the Voyages of the LT readers. Their 1 year mission for 2013 is to seek out old, unread books and read them. Boldly going where that reader has never gone before. (kind of a Star Trek pun)"

That, and two other suggestions she made can be found in comment #28.

While I think the acronym is a bit belabored, I have to admit I could have a lot of fun with a SPACE theme. Not least because there are a lot of books about space on my TBR pile. Whatever we call it, though, I am definitely in again next year!

82PawsforThought
lokakuu 13, 2012, 2:50 pm

-> Yeah, it's a bit forced but it could be tricky to come up with something new that isn't. Although, I don't see why the acronym can't stay but the meaning change - that is, if someone can come up with a different one that's better.

Just an average thriller. But a very incomplete and unsatisfying end. It felt like something was missing.

OK I think I want to slightly revise my challenge, I'm not going to reduce the numbers, but instead of reading pre-20th January 2012 books I just need to read 61 books from my shelves, whenever I bought them, before the end of the year - it still sounds a tall order but I have a major reading fest planned for Christmas. I hope that this is OK.

118>> the challenge is whatever you want it to be.

I personally include books that I receive in the current year for review. They have to be read in a timely manner, so to me they are definite BOMBS. I probably cheated a little because numerous books were bought December 27th just so I could count them in the challenge.

Just sayin'.

128Tallulah_Rose

Muokkaaja: lokakuu 31, 2012, 1:16 pm

As it stands at the moment, I just started Disobedience by Jane Hamilton today. I'm hopeful to have it finished by October 31, but it's starting out really slowly and I'm only into the second chapter now. Relatively slow reading at the moment.

So that means that as of October 31, 2012:

October 2012
Total books read: 10 (as of October 31, 2012)
Total rereads: 0 (yes!)
Total acquisitions: 11 (as of October 27, 2012)
Books taken off my TBR pile and sent to new homes: 22 (as of October 27, 2012)

That breaks down as:

2 'old' books read from my TBR pile - books that have been on my TBR pile for five years or longer that I have read for the first time this month.

5 'new' books read from my TBR pile - books that I received in October and read the same month.

3 'aging' books read from my TBR pile - books that I received a year ago or less that I have read for the first time this month.

I recently received notification that 22 books were taken off my TBR pile and sent to new homes as of October 27, 2012 - 1 was an ebook that I had purged, and 21 were print books that I donated to other people! :)

As it stands now, I have read 93 books out of 100 that I want to read in 2012 and have donated or purged 86 books out of 100 in 2012. I'm doing so well in my goals so far. :)

I have not touched any of the tickers except my own. :)

I think I have finished for October as well. This was a very good month for me, clearing 10 books from the shelves (Not saying how many I bought). My YTD total is 96/110. My goal actually looks like it should be obtainable now. I haven't updated the group tickers.

Books read from my book shelf, with a goal of 53 60:

So far I've only read one this month, but I have two more in progress that I might get finished tomorrow.

142Tallulah_Rose
lokakuu 31, 2012, 5:46 am

October was a bad month for me, since I added quite a lot (at least for my standards) to the shelves. However, I managed to read or discard 3 more books, bringing me to a total of 23 BOMBS this month. (Cyderry, something's wrong with my totals, I was at 20 end of september, not 50. Maybe I expressed myself wrong when I mentioned that I read 50 books all in all in 2012 so far, regardless of BOMB or not).
Because of that mistake I'll do nothing to the ticker. Sorry that I just now saw that mistake.

143Robertgreaves
lokakuu 31, 2012, 8:47 am

End of October report:

Bombs detonated: 6
