As to memoirs, I'd recommend Edmund White's Our Paris: Sketches from Memory, Paris was a Woman: Portraits from the Left Bank, by Andrea Weiss, and, of course, no book lover should go without Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare and Company.
("A collection of vignettes from twenty acclaimed filmmakers are woven together to form a portrait of love on the streets of Paris. Directors featured include the Coen Brothers, Gus Van Sant, Wes Craven, Walter Sallas, and Gurinder Chadha.")
I like the latest travel books by Frommer, and the beautiful Eyewitness travel guides by DK publishing. One had some very nice walking tours of specific areas.
Make sure that you have at least one French pastry ( bought from a patisserie) or buy a macaron from Laduree ( shops on both Right and Left banks)
Favourite galleries- Musee Marmottan ( wonderful Monet paintings -small museum), Orangerie, ( Monet waterlillies murals) Carnavalet- see the 19th century furniture and see about getting your tickets for all museums in advance( online is good)
Have a great time!
Be careful of pickpockets on the Right Bank. (near tourist sites and on the Metro.)
