amysisson says she's got 32 bookshelves. I had to count up mine. I have 24, only seven are talls. That doesn't count what's stored in attic, basement and out in the garage, some on metal shelves discarded by my library during a re-model. I've got some pictures on my profile page.

Well, if we don't count the garage where I have some 2,500 science fiction books I sell on behalf of an organisation, we've got 25 full height book cases and one half height.

I also use 2x4's and 2x6's in several of my bookcases to create a raised back row to double up the number of books on that shelf. This works well for paperbacks and small hardbacks (the vintage girls' career romance novels are smaller than today's average hardcover).
My bookshelves are quite a mish-mash. I got several from Kmart and Target -- I can put together a six-foot bookshelf in no time! I got two beautiful barrister cases from Kmart some years ago -- those were tricky to put together, but you'd never know they came from a discount store. We have two army-issue (yes, that ugly green color) stackable barrister bookcase units that we inherited from my husband's Ph.D. advisor. Since they're so ugly anyway, I set them far apart from each other and put flat plywood across the top connecting them to create a long, long shelf.
If only I could get the books that still don't fit out of boxes.....

I have the same quantity of bookshelves as fif.

What fif said. Mine are piling up in stacks on the floor but no space for another bookcase; occasional avalanches happen.

I've got seven custom-made floor-to-ceiling bookcases (six-to-seven shelves each, depending) and a custom-made dictionary stand with three shelves, plus three three-shelf bookcases my father-in-law made decades ago. There are books on the half-shelves cases built on either side of the fireplace, plus maybe ten three-shelf prefab deals scattered around the house. (Ergo, my user name here.) There are ninety-three shelves, plus five or six other (smaller) surfaces that contain books; none on the floor.

People collect books who appreciate knowledge in one of its true forms. It is only natural for humanity to collect knowledge, which can be found by many in written literature. We need to keep in mind that knowledge is ever-flowing, and by containing it within our own domains, as teeming as they might be, is not allowing the true potential of the knowledge to flow into the world. It is not our job to collect knowledge, but to give it back to this world, in ways that the humanity of our times can fully see, understand, and appreciate it.

>9 WholeHouseLibrary: With just a few more added on the floor, that is what I am sure heaven will be like..........
>10 AntipodeanAbyss: Yep. I would agree (though I could not have stated it that well) with that but I'm sure that is not what is in the back of my mind when I snag yet another book to squeeze onto my shelves.
