Welcome to the group, Bonnie! Make yourself at home by reading other people's threads. You'll find lots of mystery lovers here, for instance, and a mystery thread if you check out the wiki on the group home page.
We'd also love to know what you think of what you are reading. It's been a L-O-N-G time since I read Helen McInnes, but I bet she still works.
Anyway, enjoy!

I should get close to 75 at this rate. For a long time I really just collected books from used book sales and didn't read them. Lately I've been reding more books than I've been buying. I've been trying to write little reviews when I finish.

I finished A Sudden , Fearful Death . This is the last in the Monk series that I own so I will probably switch to Thomas and Charlotte Pitt. I totally loved first Monk but they are getting a bit long and repetative now. I'm also reading Ellis Peters' fallen into the pit . It is the first in the series so all of Comerford is nice and new to me.

I enjoy reading Helen MacInnes . I think the adventure aspect still works and I like seeing how people in the 60's saw themselves. I like seeing how attitudes have changed and how they have stayed the same. I feel like Anne Perry has a need to preach at the Victorians instead of just presenting them as they are and letting us have our own opinions.

I liked fallen into the pit very much. It was written in 1951 and I love seeing the attitudes of post-war UK presented by someone who doesn't know how things will work out. They're a bit worried that Germans are just a hopelessly nasty lot who are never going to learn to co-exist. If they can settle into a peaceful nation, it gives me hope for other parts of the world that are considered to be at war forever.
Even though this was written for adults, two 13-yearolds do a major amount of detecting. It's kind of a realistic slant on Bobbsey Twins type mysteries. Trixie Belden was my personal favorite.

I finished mrs. pollifax and the second thief. I just feel like Mrs. Pollifax is my friend and I enjoy catching up with her and her adventurous life. For some reason my favorite line is " I brought sneakers." Maybe I need to be better prepared so I can have adventures.

I got away from mysteries with Random Harvest. There is a mystery just no murder. I thought it was a very unique story about amnesia and the people who lived through both World Wars. The minor characters are particularly good. There is a pub owner, the members of a second-rate theatre troup, and a clergyman with a need to do good but no guilt about not doing his assigned job. For a man born in 1840, he's not what you would expect of a Victorian. I thought the movie was weird and depressing.
Termination Dust was a nice mystery set in the Yukon. it's a mystery in a mystery with a Gold Rush era story also being told.

I finished the week of Rabbi Small mysteries. I probably won't read any more of those for a while. I've started The Hunger Games. It's certainly different from the old stuff and mysteries that I usually read.

I'm going backwards in the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries. I couldn't remember anything about Paragon Walk. I'm glad I did because I liked the relationship between Charlotte and her sister Emily.

I enjoyed The Hunger Games. A friend gave me her daughter's copy. I kept thinking of all the teen films and novels that center on a competition. Definitely turned it on its head to have them killing their opponents. I didn't know what would happen. My guess was having her escape the arena or a Hippie type love-in. It probably seemed more original to me because I've read so little recent YA fiction or anything set in the future.

Faro's Daughter by Georgette Heyer ,a dollop of Regency silliness. I listened to a Chivers audiobook which delivered the witty dialogue well. It was on cassettes. I'm wondering if much Heyer is available on CD's or downloads. Anyway it was a dollar well spent on my library's discard.

I've finished all the Mrs. Pollfax that I own. The last two were kind of dull. I plan to switch to Amelia Peabody.
I saw the film of The Hunger Games. I'm always curious about what they will do with the movie but I'm also a bit bored because I know what will happen. I was disappointed that they didn't have more fun with the fashions in the Capitol. I liked District 12 as a cross between 1930's Appalachia and a prison.

I finished my Mom's old copy of Show Boat. I love musicals so I like reading the original source of the material. It creates an interesting world on the showboat. Magnolia is less of a lovestruck ninnie. It's as racist as you'd expect for 1926.

I listened to another Thomas and Charlotte Pitt mystery Rutland Place. I liked this one. There was a bit of humor and light-heartedness thrown in. It showed more of Thomas and Charlotte's relationship. And we glimpsed some different parts of Victorian Life.

I found a Martha Grimes novel , The Dirty Duck at the Friends of the Library sale. She's a favorite of mine. A nice little mystery. A quicker, easier read than her others that I have read. I liked the characters and the descriptions of their interactions.

Finished Death and the Joyful Woman by Ellis Peters. Nice characters. I liked the early twist that turned a murder mystery convention on its head.

I collected all of the Helen MacInnes novels at used book sales. It became a challenge to find them all. I took The Snare of the Hunter off Mount TBR and finished it. The poor thing started shedding pages. Nice cold war spy story. It could have used a quirky character or situation.

You are busy plugging away at your challenge! I haven't read a Martha Grimes novel in years although I used to enjoy them. I think I got a bit burned out on them for a time. I may have one or two in a box, and if so, I'll eventually get back to them. I've read most of the Pitt novels, but I'm not caught up, and I haven't read them in order. I read a lot of Ellis Peters novels back in the 80s and 90s. Sadly, I can't remember which ones I read and which I didn't so I'll probably end up re-reading most of them at some point, because I'm enjoying historical mysteries quite a bit lately.

Hi Thanks for visiting my thread. I've started another Martha Grimes ,Jerusalem Inn. Jury is playing Pacman in Newcastle. I don't think I'll ever get him caught up to 2012. I like that he moves around the UK. I get burned out on series too. I like to give them a break and then go back. Generally I prefer books that are actually old to historical ones. Though I just finished another historical mystery The Hippopotamus Pool. It was a nice visit back to exploring Egypt with Amelia Peabody and her circle.
P.S. I read that you like genealogy. I'm going to a family reunion in Texas hoping to learn about my pioneer era ancestors.

Listened to Ill Wind by Nevada Barr. Interesting characters and relationships. I like the atmosphere of living in Mesa Verde Park.

I finished Jerusalem Inn. I liked having Melrose trapped in a manor house with Aunt Agatha and a murderer. And the usual suspects. The Big Secret was known by way too many people.

Bluegate Fields with the Pitts. A bit dark and humorless for me. Didn't learn much new about Victorian Era either.

kesäkuu 20, 2012, 11:54 pm

Flight of a Witch I liked it. Ellis Peters seemed to be fantasizing a bit about what it's like to have looks that have all the men falling in love with you. Annet doesn't fit any pretty girl stereotype. The photo on the dust jacket made it easy to imagine Ellis Peters as a fellow wall flower. I wanted more of Dominic Felse.

Hollywood Buzz A nice mystery. I liked learning about Hollywood's involvement in the WWII effort. For good and bad the charaters and plot were out of a 40's B-movie.

Ride a pale horseby Helen MacInnes. The author was born in 1907 and I'm afraid it shows .While it's not unbelievable that an amateur finding herself in a nest of spies would later take a backseat to the professionals, I've read enough of this author to know that if it'd been a male amateur he would've stayed front and center being in charge and making the decisions. I still like the book despite the heroine turning into a damsel in distress. It had a steady stream of action. It was not preachy. It delved into many aspects of the spy business.

silence in Hanover close

I was afraid this series was going to become too repetitive. But this entry made some nice changes. I like going undercover in Victorian London. There is also a bit of romance.

I have to vent somewhere about what Anne Perry wrote in "Bethlehem Road". In a letter from Venice in 1880's, Emily writes that she took the train to Venice and then a carriage to her hotel. In the morning she is delightfully surprised to find herself on a canal with a singing gondolier. Apparently poor Anne Perry had never been to Venice at that time. I have been to Venice. There is no way carriages ever got to the hotels. It's boats or your feet. Lots and lots of little bridges with lots and lots steps. Magically lovely but no wheels or horses.

I finished Bethlehem Road. I like this one too. This one touches on various aspects of women's (lack of) rights. I like the way Anne Perry sets her books in a specific year. She brings up what laws have been passed and what's happening in current events.

The Great Impersonation included a bit of lots of things that I like in books. It's old, from 1920. It has spies, a Gothic romance, and a trip to an exotic place, Africa.

In Highgate Rise I like adding working class Gracie to the snooping team. It adds another layer of society.

I finished a short story collection Lord Peter views the body. At first I thought the title was a little off because most of the stories don't involve murders. But I now realize it was meant to have a double meaning because many of the stories involve wills. It looks like I will read right at 75 books this year.

38BonnieJune54
joulukuu 30, 2012, 11:29 pm

I just finished The Window at the White Cat. It's a nice old mystery. I think I prefer standalones to series. In a series there's so little that can really happen to the main character. This had some romance and humor. I like the character winking with both eyes because she couldn't manage the one eyed wink. It seems in modern books nice characters are never allowed to be in the inept at anything.
