Correlli Barnett is a British historian best known for his sequence of books about the decline of British power in the 20th Century. He believes this can be blamed on poor decisions by successive governments.

I remember seeing recently a book which took the opposite tack to Barnett; a history of Britain since 1945 arguing that the postwar governments had actually done a very good job and greatly improved the British standard of living. I can't remember what it was called. I think it was published sometime in the last 10 years. Can anyone help?

Actually, I think I may have found it, by searching my local library's catalogue by shelf-mark (a slow process).

The Myth of Decline: The Rise of Britain Since 1945 by George Bernstein sounds like it's the book I was thinking of.

Some of David Edgerton's books may interest you too, such as Warfare State: Britain, 1920-1970, as he takes Barnett very much to task too.
