I was trying to map out my collection this week, and thought I might as well measure all of the shelves and calculate total length.
Grand total is 209 linear feet in the house. Several of those feet are double stacked. This does not include the random piles, the books stored in garage, attic and basement.
Should I seek help?

Let's see.
18x30'' + 12x14'' = 708'' = 59'
This does not include the places I had designated as temporary book-places (the floor next to the bed for example...) or the top of the bookcases. And some of these are double-stacked. Now considering that I had been living here for only a bit over an year, I might actually need to seek help...

Help is available on the Statistics/Memes link from your Profile just click on Pages, Dimensions and Weight and you will never have to pick up a tape measure again.
That is probably not the help you wanted but it does produce a good estimate.
This site is full of enablers when it comes to procuring books.

Except that I have a split library (half here, half of it halfway across the world) and I don't have half of my books added (half from each part of the library...). So the meme will help - when I have everything in and verified :)

Just counting shelves and adding up - approx. 240 feet
From the stats/memes page, my books are an estimated 329 ft. However, that's using an average assumed from the approx. 30% of my books for which there are somewhat accurate dimensions entered.
Since not all the books in my LT catalogue are on shelves (I have stacks waiting to sort and sell, store, or give away), and since my LT catalogue includes wishlisted books (can't tell if the stats/memes page excludes those or not), I'd make my best guess at approx. 270 feet of actual books, total.

Back of the envelope... probably 100 linear feet. And I will need to do some major cleaning and purging (and entering on LT!) to get everything to fit on there. Not a priority at the moment, unfortunately.

PS you can click the Settings button at the upper right of the Dimensions page to tweak which collections it pulls from.

According to the stats, our estimated shelving requirements for 7,270 books are 542.5 feet, still less than the Washington Monument by a dozen feet or so.
However, not everything is shelved and some shelves are double deep in several areas. Counting just shelves with books on them (and not doubling for double deep ones nor counting shelves devoted to DVDs, boxed magazines, etc.) we have 4,342 inches which is 361.83 feet (0.069 miles). All things considered, that's not bad for an 1,100 sq. ft. house.
Clearly in our next home we will need room for at least 200 feet more shelving, taking us up to 562 feet and probably more if we want to have room for growth.

We're in a category of our own. Now we're measuring how many feet of bookshelves we have...
...but I include myself in that category. Hmm, where's my tape measure???

The totals in the physical dimensions stats page only becomes meaningful (or at least reasonable estimates) when you get rid of obvious outliers, especially those 20x20x20 inch books weighing 20 lbs. from Amazon data. Then it helps to fill in data for books which lack these measurements. Sometimes data will be available for a book's height but not its thickness. However, doing this is a major project, like getting those final few hundred cover images, and other priorities loom.

In my case it seems to come out pretty close to reality, but it's probably just a happy coincidence, since LT only has thickness data for just over half my books: I've got 66m of shelving in use for books, whilst my stats page predicts 66.7m.
13Keeline
Perhaps you have a lot of "average" books.
I think that when thickness is not available it might make an estimate based on average thickness of books.

Approx 500 feet, but I need about 150 more feet to cover the stacks of books and books in boxes waiting to be shelved ;(

You (#1 - OP) definitely need help. But don't we all?
I'm not great with feet and such. I'm European - we work with meters (3.something feet to a meter). And I have some shelves double stacked, some even triple stacked. Soon I will need a way to fit bookshelves to my ceilings ;-)
But very rough estimate (keeping in mind I don't really understand your system of measurements): c. 250 feet actually showing. Easily double that if you want to get to a grand total.

You can never be too rich, too thin, or have too much shelf space.

When I moved a couple months ago, the family and I estimated that I had about 60-70 ft of shelf space but needed around 100 ft.

I built a bookshelf yesterday to serve as a dividing wall between rooms. Total added shelf space = 21 feet.

Oh, nice, more room for books's, precious.
21staffordcastle
Yay! Excellent use of space!

Justification for more purchases?? While lots of my pretties languish in boxes.
The big local used book sale is coming up in a few weeks.

Love those used book sales - have fun!

According to LT, my library is 226.7 feet; my main library is 221 feet--there are a few empty shelves, but I also have books stored in my home and work offices, so LT's estimate is fairly accurate.

Might I suggest that you sort your catalog by thickness and look at the largest. You may find that the height or width is in the wrong field, thereby making your book length quite exagerated.
I have spent a bit of time over the past 3-4 months correcting these and checking any book that I happen to handle, and, even though I've bought a dozen or so books in that time, the height of my stacked books has dropped about 40 feet to 325, though still a bit higher than Elizabeth Tower (I assume that's what they mean when they show the height of Big Ben, which is actually only a bit over 7 feet tall).
