What makes you go out and run?

Rocky! :)

Really, just to get in shape and be able to have endurance in sports.

It started off being to get my weight and blood pressure down. Done! Now it's to train for races, esp ones where I can raise money for charity. And to be honest, so I can keep eating cakes!

Running to be able to eat cake (or cheeseburgers) is always a good reason, Lyzzy! Lessens the guilt of the oreos. ;)

And it is fun, too!

I did a big run last Sunday so gave myself the week off (some 3 mile walks still) and I'm itching to go again tomorrow morning!

When I'm not injured, which is rare, it just feels sooo good to run. When I am injured, I jog slowly still so that I can eat all the chocolate I want at work.

Hmm, we all seem rather food-motivated. ;)

#6, is the continuation of your name "once a runner, always a runner" or more of a "I once was a runner, and then I got injured"?

Lefty33,
Unfortunately, it is more like "I once was a runner, and then I got injured, and injured, and injured." I will never stop loving doing it though and find it cruel that I can't still run more.

Oh dear - did the running injure you? This is why I am very careful, as I had an old hip and foot problem (one leg longer than the other) but because I'm careful and cautious I have never had any problem from them since starting running, in fact they have got easier as I built up strength. Except when I ran on the roads in trail shoes the once...

I started marathoning when I was 12 years old in the mid-70's. By the early 80's I was doing more than 100+ miles/week in only 7 runs. Then I gave it up for a year and tried to return and my body has never let me return to running...well, not much at least. A few miles here and there.

My goodness! I mean, "only 7 runs" means running every day, presumably? You must have worn yourself out!

Even though I had a horrible run yesterday, any pain today is only in my muscles, not my joints - phew!

Anyone got any tips for getting past a horrible run and keeping your eye on the main prize? They do knock me back mentally and emotionally...

Just remember, as in life, there are always ups and downs; good days and bad ones. Just as easily as a bad day can follow a good one, so can a good day follow a bad. : )

Thank you! I did realise that a) I got too hot (I put on my long running leggings thinking it was cooler than it was) and b) I didn't eat enough for lunch. So I think I've used the experience wisely now.

I was pleased to manage some work with my 3kg free weights today and it's yoga day tomorrow, then a run on Sunday. I'm good at slow, long runs, so not too nervous about attempting the 9 miler, though it's further than I've ever run before...

Cheers for the support!

I started (this time) to get my weight down a little and to get my blood pressure to drop. Now I do it because I feel better when I've been running(oh yeah and the eating thing.)

Sadly, I broke my toe 2 weeks ago and haven't been able to run. My Doc told me i could start up again at the end of a total of 3 weeks. So, I have one more week to go.

It's great for the blood pressure, isn't it! My doctors were very impressed and said they'd tell other people about the effect. I certainly prefer running, however horrible a session it is, to being on the bp medication!

Sorry to hear about the toe - how did you break it? Hope you can get out and about again soon.

LyzzyBee,
One time I ran an 8k road race and was very disappointed by my time, but then three weeks later I ran a marathon averaging just 10 seconds per mile slower than that 8K pace and was really excited again. Mood swings!

Just to let you know I did a lovely 9 miles in 1 hr 46 min 50 sec this morning - the furthest and longest time I've ever run! AND I did the first 5 miles faster than my 5 on Thursday.

I think the yoga session I did on Sat eve helped me.

*Although* I did trip during Mile 8 - I didn't fall but I did land heavily on my "bad" leg, jarring it, and now my foot hurts; hopefully this is just a jar and I will feel OK in a couple of days.

Anyway feeling good about the 9 achieved and more confident about the race, and thank you again those who commented.

LyzzyBee,
Congrats on your run. It always feels good to run further than you have ever run before... or faster for that matter.
I hope the fall ends up being nothing more than an embarrassment. (Someday I'll tell the story of me falling on a treadmill in front of a whole gym filled with people : )...wait I just did.
I too had a good run today...5.3 miles in 35 minutes and only my left foot hurt. No hamstring, calf, or hip pain or speak of.

Thanks OnceARunner and well done on your run.

My foot hurt and I limped on Sun, so my hip hurt yesterday. Wore Doc Marten boots to keep my ankle and foot from twisting, rested, and not so sore now (in the middle of the night).

I didn't fall right over (amazingly) just went oooopps and recovered!

I've never fallen off a treadmill but I don't go on them often because of that!
