Glimpsed from and on streetcar this morning, unrelated subjects at various distances from each other:

1. a girl in shorts and frilly blouse and shiny shiny thigh-high black pleather boots with stiletto heels. She also had cat's ears in her hair.

2. a girl in white hot pants, white top and toeless ankle-high black boots

3. a stocky teenager in denim shorts, T-shirts, and, from bare thighs and knees down, the bottom parts of flowery flared pants.

Don't get me wrong, but where are the photographs?

;-)

I knoooow! I wish I could remember to carry my camera with me all the time, and then I wish I weren't so damn shy about photographing strangers.

Which reminds me, in the latest Hammacher-Schlemmer catalogue there's a tiny camera (supposedly the smallest in the world)... HMMMM.

I think my fingers are a bit too big to use that camera.

The one thing that has been added to mobile telephones over the years that I think is good, is cameras. They can be unreliable in that the tiny lenses can get dirty and spoil some photographs, but I've been delighted to capture nice pictures when out and about. (I have not taken any of people such as those you described in your opening post. Honest!)

Ah yes. I suppose I'm the last person in the developed world without a cellphone. (Actually, I have a technological dinosaur from 2003 I use only for SMS.)

We cancelled our fixed line in the house and use Skype on the Internet to call friends and relatives for virtually nothing, or nothing if they have their computers on.

That has saved us over 150 euros a month.

I shall never give up my land line! Never! And I want telegrams brought back too! And Sunday mail! Twice a day!

For the past three years I have been employed by the Irish postal organisation. It's an interesting time working in an industry that is disappearing due to the effect of modern communications technology. Physical letters is vanishing. There is a great term for this, "e-substitution".

Ireland hasn't had regular Saturday postal deliveries for decades. I don't think we ever had Sunday deliveries. We're too Catholic a country to have people work on a Sunday. They're too busy going to sports events. ;-)

Next time I'll say HI!

You know, I keep seeing people today dressed as for some party I wasn't invited to...

I don't have a cell either, Lola. See you at the dinosaur watering hole sometime.

LolaWalser at #1:Glimpsed from and on streetcar this morning, unrelated subjects at various distances from each other...

Citizen Kane, 1944:

Bernstein: A fellow will remember a lot of things you wouldn't think he'd remember. You take me. One day, back in 1896, I was crossing over to Jersey on the ferry, and as we pulled out, there was another ferry pulling in, and on it there was a girl waiting to get off. A white dress she had on. She was carrying a white parasol. I only saw her for one second. She didn't see me at all, but I'll bet a month hasn't gone by since that I haven't thought of that girl.

Yard scene--no, make that, street-facing patch-of-lawn bedecked with porcelain animals, dwarfs and wind wheels: two squirrels shagging, boy's dark brown tail swishing under dwarf's nose like a shaving brush.
