My world is turned upside down. I've just read 'The Trumpet-Major' by Thomas Hardy, which turned out unexpectedly light-hearted, followed by 'Phineas Redux' which turned out unexpectedly dark. Death, murder and disillusionment...

I found The Macdermots of Ballycoran very sad and unsettling.

I thought The Vicar of Bullhampton really dark for a trollope novels, prostitutes, fallen women and murder, very dark stuff!

Sir Harry Hotspur and linda Tressel were desperately sad - but now I' m wondering whether 'dark' might include 'cynical' in which case The Way We Live Now certainly is in the running.
