Historical Fiction vs. History

I understand that fiction is huge. I get it. Not a fan of it, but I get it. IF I were to read a historical fiction piece from the middle ages, what would be the best you could recommend?

Well, I liked reading Alfred Duggan's Count Bohemond which deals with the First Crusade.

Of course, there are classics worth reading such as Shakespeare's Henry V, Beowulf and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.

But I also prefer to read heavier books. A while ago I finished Clifford Rogers' War Cruel and Sharp about strategy during the Hundred Years War. One of his other books, The Wars of Edward III, still lies unread on my shelf. It contains many contemporary sources, which almost read as a novel.

I think I have both of those on my wishlist haha! I've heard good things about Arthur Conan Doyle's The White Company.

I haven't read The White Company, but I did notice that you own The Life and Campaigns of the Black Prince: from contemporary letters, diaries and chronicles, including Chandos Herald' by Richard Barber. I loved reading that.

Oh yeah. The Prince is just one of those characters from that time period whom I can't read enough about. The same goes for John Hawkwood and John Talbot as well. If you haven't read any on those two I highly recommend.

For a piece of fiction written in the Middle ages, there's Chretien de Troyes Arthurian Epics. And of couse, "L'Morte d'Arthur" by Thomas Malory.....just sayin...

Quentin Durward by Walter Scott, gives the perspective of a Scottish archer over the rivalries between the Habsburgs and France during the transition period from the late medieval age towards the Renaissance. Commynes memoirs over the same period read like fiction.

I'm interested myself in looking into The Accursed Kings series by Maurice Druon, beginning with The Iron King. Bernard Cornwell has also dipped into this period with titles like The Archer's Tale (aka Harlequin).
