Inspired by this thread, I thought I'd see what we all call our dogs . . . you know, besides their actual names!

Sometimes I think Sophie thinks her name is "Beautiful" or "Good girl." I also call her "Lovey Puppy" even though she is all grown up and not a puppy any more.

What about you? Do you have nicknames for your dogs?

We call out little pitbull mix Katy "Piggin" because she makes oinking sounds when she's telling us something. And when she stands her ears up they look a lot like pig ears.

We nicknamed our Raven "Dirt Dog" because as a young dog she loved digging and still as an older lady loves rolling in the dirt. We'll unconsciously call her this and one time our vet put a label on a prescription bottle for her and had her name as "Dirt Dog".

Oh I love that: "Dirt Dog" on her prescription! That really cracked me up!

that is funny! we call outlaw "jones" for no real reason, and that is NOT our last name, we just came up with it somewhere......

Oh, I forgot to put the two really funny/embarrassing names I have for Sophie in my original post. When she is trying to get me to do something (feed her, take her out, play with her), she is "Bossyboots." When she is in a cuddly-playful mood, she is "Princess Kicky-Foot Licky-Tongue."

Puppy-toed Cuteheart...
Also, Love-Puppy, Honey-Pup, Missie Fuffy, Dolly-Dog, Fuzzy Butt, and Snarly Pup (when playing).

She's a Jack Russell (mix?) and much more of a Tomboy than her nicknames might suggest.
Embarrassing when overheard? Oh, yeah! Actually, I think I embarrass the dog! :D

These are all fantastic, I love that dog owners never seem to be able to call our dogs what we name them. Sgt. Pepper is Pep or Angel face or pretty face or Pepperoni, or Pepperkins or Sarge or Miss Kins or baby girl or bunny or probably the most embarrassing for her...Bun Bun.

Cdr. Data is Buddy boy or Data buddy or dum dum or buddy or Mr. Buddy or smiles or info or my wittle baby boy. I'm sure as he gets older he'll get more names, Pepper certainly has gained more and more over the years.

When talking to them both they are either my weirdos, my puppies or my poopies.

When Hubby and I are talking to each other about them it is either Miss Kins and Mr. Buddy

It is a miracle they know their names at all.

I'm loving this thread, great nicknames. I also have Mattie my only dog who likes to jump up on people. I've pretty much broken her of the habit by telling her "4 on the floor" but when she does it we call her "waltzing Matilda".

I think I've already posted some of this somewhere, but when Brontë was a pup she was Brontë Bear when she was being being good (rare!) and Brontë-saurus when she was being evil. She's now mainly Bear, Bearzy, or Baby Bear. When I got Flynn he had to fit into the "bear"theme as well, so he became either Flynny bear, big bear (since he's a lot bigger than Brontë) or hairy bear (he's also hairier). If I address them together they are my bearzies, puppy bears, or doggly wogglies (or, occasionally, my pair of red devils).

A thread to make us smile! LOVE IT
Dali, 15 year old Golden has gotten bigger and slower over the years--It goes like this: "Come on, Big Red, move it" or "Diva Dali's ready to go out or ready to go to bed" or "The Diva's having no part of that" as her aches can make her grumpy if you want her to move faster. The Diva will even throw you a snarl now to show you her displeasure.

Lucas, other elderly Golden has the personality of the lampshade on his head at a party. He can be called Bonehead often! Lucas Pookus affectionately as well. **both Goldens act like the old married man & woman where the man is forever loving, patient kind and forgiving and the woman to correct & reorganize often, so my husband calls them Anthony & Bonnie to be extra jovail. (our names)

Ben is BenBen, my friend, and Boodle Butt. With Boodles being used most often by me. Benny Hana, or just Hana or Hanz used almost daily.

Our daughter just moved into her own place and rescued a Beagle she named Lilly. Lilly's ear's almost drag the ground with her little short legs so I call her "Lil Low Rider" or because she stays so excited and dances for 30 minutes when she sees me "Happy Feet". Taylor calls her Little Willy and Wittle Lilly..which is even hard to type! = )

Foggi...Princess Kicky-Foot Licky-Tongue....oh that was a belly laugh along with Dirt Dog on the bottle!!

cute, cute thread!

My best friend Dorothy always called my dog "Bertie-Wertie". In a high pitched, squeaky voice. He loved it.

Now that she has three dogs of her own (Molly, Aries, and Abu), we call them Molly-Wally, Aries-Waries, and Boo. (Her husband shortened Abu to Boo before Dorothy could hyphen-W her name.)

One of Dorothy's friends, Ellen, has a rescued cocker spaniel named Jake that she takes to agility competitions. Of course, Dorothy calls him Jakey-Wakey. Ellen once, out of habit, told one of the judges of a competition that her dog's name was "Jakey-Wakey". And that's how he was announced when they did their run. She still is embarrased by that.

>16 rxtheresa: Thanks! My 10 year old niece actually used to ring me up in the mornings to ask "Is she being Brontë Bear or Brontë-saurus today"? For a while there, more often than not it was Brontë-saurus! Now she's just gorgeous - still full of mischief, but the most lovable girl.

I have three rescue "pups" (the youngest is 8)

Shadda is my problem child. When she was a baby, I used to call her "Sqeaky Underfoot", "Squeaky Girl" and "Little Miss Mayhem". lately she is "Ninja Princess".

Max is an escape artist. So she is "Maximum Security" (which she stays on at all times. Thank goodness they replaced the fence at the dog park!)

Chewy is "Chewbacca Wonder Pup Master of Confusion", "Little Man", and IGA dog (from the old IGA slogan, "I Get Attention!")

One dog, given name Tirzah.

Other names, spoken with affection:

Twitface
Pup-pup
Ding-O (as in dingie)
Ding-O Dog
Moose (she weighs about 85 pounds)
Critter

More to come as they occur to me...

Our dogs tend to aquire their nicknames as a way of annoying my husband who, like most men, is thoroughly turned off by baby talk between owners and their dogs. That's why - especially when we're in company - our beloved Biggles (1985-2002) was referred to loudly as 'Mommy's ickle wickle Jellybean', while Skeelo gets 'Mommy's ickle pumpkin' or Mommy's ickle black honey bear'. When there's no point in trying to embarras the other half he (Skeelo, that is) gets Stinko or Fartington.

My dog Hamish sometimes gets called Ham bone, Ham-puppy, Hammy, or from a friend of mine "little Ham".

Stinky Pinky. Pibble with tuna breath. Loki is sometimes Lokimon.

Funny how many of our babies' names refer to their flatulence or general stinkiness (Fartacus is another common one in our house). Surely a sign of how much we love them even when they're at their least um . . . wholesome.

I mentioned The mother of the 10 puppies I was "Uncle" to.

Well the bloke who found/rescued call her "Dum Dum"
cos to his mind she was not the brighest Shepard he had owned. We hated the name, but could not came up with another which stuck. Thus she was Dum Dum for the rest of her stay.

I call my dog Pupperz or sometimes Puppa Girl. It's kinda sad, if you think about it. :)

Our basset is Henrietta or Hetty for short, and we often add a Boo or Boo Boo to Hetty, but with advent of Honey Boo Boo its become kind of embarassing.

Just joined and thought I would embarrass myself right off. I don't normally post R-rated, but it's funny too (I think):

Rosie (red heeler): RoseRosieRedNewMexicoChilidog
Murphy (blue heeler): Frodo
Lorena (red heeler): Weena
Wiley (rez mutt): WileyLeaveTheCatFoodAlone
Marty (Australian Shepherd): Smarty Marty (of course, too smart for her own good sometimes)
Amos Moses (Chihuahua): R-rated (can I say it?) Dr. Pecker (you can imagine)
