What do you think are the best Beverly Clearly books? I would like to get those as gifts to various 7 year olds for Christmas gifts. Definitely a Ramona and Bezus for my 7 year old niece who is feeling exacerbated by her 4 year old brother and perhaps a good Henry Huggins for 7 year old boy twins. I would love a list of the absolute top favorites for that age and especially by her.
thanks!!

My first grade daughter has enjoyed Socks and the three Ralph S. Mouse books. I don't think you can go wrong with any Beverly Cleary books.

Also, the Fudge series of books by Judy Blume are great for that age.

I've no idea if these books are dated, but the first two Beverly Clearys I read were Ellen Tebbits and Otis Spofford....(Otis was Ellen's nemesis and appears in the first book.) I still remember them so they made quite an impression and I know I preferred them to Ramona and Beezus, although those are wonderful too.

I just read Henry Huggins to my kids and while, it is a "simpler" time, I think they really hold up well because of the characters and her eye for detail. Thanks!

Ramona the Pest has always been a favorite of mine. For the older set, Fifteen is my favorite.

This is a bit late for the original post. :) But I have been reading the whole Ramona series lately and the Henry Huggins books as well (which also include Ramona, at least most the ones I have read so far, some to a larger degree than others). I originally read a couple when younger and rereading them and the others now they are as good as I remember. The situations encountered are equally as relevant today. Eg. The father loses his job, the mother has to take on a job herself, the father then does a university course... sibling and neighbour problems, pets, the works. They are fantastic books. The Ramona series, eight books, are definitely what I'd recommend. Henry Huggins series too. The Huggins series also focusses on the dog Ribsy, so great for dog lovers. Beverly Cleary and her husband had twins, a boy and a girl, so I can highly recommend her book Mitch and Amy. It is really good! It's about twins and though they bicker as many siblings do, deep down they really do care about each other. Her books stand the test of time and they are worth reading.

I also loved Dear Mr. Henshaw!

"Ribsy" is the first Beverly Cleary book I read. I think I was 7. It was actually the last of the Henry Huggins series, but it works well as a stand-alone book. Ribsy becomes separated from the Huggins' and has some fun adventures while finding his way home. It inspired me to seek out and read the rest of the series as a child.

Otis Spofford was my favorite as a child. But I'm awfully fond of The Mouse and the Motorcycle too.

They've made a movie based on her Ramona books. Ramona and Beezus (2010). I haven't seen it, but noticed it's on DVD.

Try Emily's Runaway Imagination, a one-off book set in early 20th C rural Oregon.

Socks was one of my favorites. I read it like 15 times! I read every Ramona book too.

When I was a child of 7 or 8 I absolutely loved the Henry/Beezus/Ramona books. Our library (Santa Monica, ca 1962-3) had Ribsy, Henry and the Paper Route and so on, and I read and reread them (much of the Ramona oeuvre had not yet been published). I suspect Emily's Runaway Imagination was popular with the older children or perhaps not added to the library immediately after its 1961 publication, because I only read it once at the time, and later as an adult was overjoyed to rediscover the source of the stories which I remembered vividly. Emily is probably the Cleary book with the most staying power; I still enjoy rereading it occasionally. I'd compare it to Elizabeth Enright's Thimble Summer.

The only one that I remember having "difficulties" with was Ribsy -- it was too sad for me when he was lost.

If I had to choose one Beverly Cleary book to last me the rest of my lifetime, it would be Ramona the Pest.

But truly, I adore all of her older stuff. The slightly newer stuff (Muggie Maggie, Dear Mr. Henshaw, and Strider) I did not find as compelling.

Emily's Runaway Imagination is perfect as a standalone gift.

Henry Huggins definitely
