126) Trapped by Dean R. Koontz, Edward Gorman, & Anthony Bilau
Read: Oct 31 - 31
My Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: Eclipse Graphic Novels presents the first ever visual adaptation of a Dean R. Koontz story: Trapped. White rats locked in a laboratory cage--but try not to pity them. These dome-headed monsters are huge, bioengineered smart rats. And out they break one stormy winter night. They take over the nearby house of widowed mother Meg Lassiter. Hatred glows in their clever red eyes. Meg and young Tommy are their first victims. Trapped, loathsome humans....Koontz's inimitable style permeates the graphic form, spreading evil and terror...and confronting them with the force of a mother's need to protect her child.
My Tags: fiction, sci fi, graphic novel, blizzards, connecticut, animals, rats
My Notes: A shorter version of an already short story--how ADD can you get? And yet, here I am reading it and passing up on the 50-paged story in Strange Highways. The story's interesting enough to read as a graphic novel, just not enough to actually read the full short story, because then I'd feel compelled to read the entire anthology, which I can't really do, considering my reading load already. The drawing is kind of messy; and, sorry, rats just aren't scary to me (I used to have some as pets), but I'd still recommend it to Dean Koontz fans.

The cover of "Trapped" made me think of The Littles (unfortunately, the rats aren't as big as depicted on the cover), so that's my next read: Here Come the Littles.

127) Here Come the Littles by Lorentz Carlson
Read: Oct 31 - Nov 7
My Rating: 5/5
Synopsis: Join the Littles on their biggest adventure--a race against time to save their home.
My Tags: fiction, juvenile, fantasy, picture book, series, the littles, movie tie-in
My Notes: Great flashback to the 80's! Now it makes me want to find a copy of the movie to rewatch, as cheesy as it is (especially the ending).

DVD 5) Marmaduke directed by Tom Dey
My Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: A suburban family moves to a new neighborhood with their large yet lovable Great Dane, who has a tendency to wreak havoc in his own oblivious way.
My Tags: family, comedy, animals, dogs, cats, kansas, california, PG, dvd, checked out from work
My Notes: I love Lee Pace and animals (if you hadn't noticed), so it's kind of a no-brainer that I'd put this on hold. Unfortunately, it arrived just days after my mom and I had to euthanize her Great Dane/Lab (old age--she was nearing her 90's, in dog years--and lung cancer--how the feck do dogs get lung cancer??). :( Needles to say, my mom didn't watch it, but I did. There aren't very many scenes with Lee Pace in it (compared to some of his other movies), but plenty of furry canines humanized and CGI-ed beyond belief (especially the group dog dance @ the end--sheesh). I wouldn't say this is a must-see, but fans of the cast--human and animal--will probably enjoy it. That's why I bumped it up to a 4. I mean, who wouldn't want to trade places with Marmaduke for even 5 seconds to get a bath by Lee Pace?? Ha! Kind of reminds me of that scene on The Simpsons:
Mr Burns: "Think about it, Smithers. If I came into your house and started sniffing at your crotch and slobbering all over your face, what would you say?"

Smithers: "If you did it, sir?"

13LauraBrook
marraskuu 2, 2010, 7:45 pm

#12 You are oh so veeeeery welcome, Sara! I watched Shirt Tales, Wuzzles, Get Along Gang (total mind-trip watching that one), Pound Puppies ... at one point my Mom (who was visiting) said "Are you seriously going to sit there saying 'oh my gosh' and 'i forgot about that one' for any longer"? And I said "Yes. Yes I am." To which she rolled her eyes, swore, and walked away laughing.

I wish that the Boom Network would show more 80's stuff and a little less 60/70's stuff. I grew up on those too, and still watch them sometimes, but there was such a huge amount of cartoons in the 80's that I'd like to see them again.

#13: Oh, Pound Puppies! I totally forgot about them. I can't think of one cartoon I didn't watch as a kid. :D Ah, my mom does the same thing about my books/movies, etc. "Didn't you already read/see that as a kid?", etc. But for me, a lot of my memories are in those books and movies.

Boom Network . . . oh, all this TV talk is gonna make me cry. :( I don't have cable, not even the regular channels since my HD converter broke. But I am seriously glad there's a network out there re-airing all those shows! I at least have a few recorded cartoons from when I was a kid (Dungeons and Dragons, Garfield & Friends, etc), so I don't feel like I'm totally missing out. Plus I bought the Beverly Hill Teens series this year (I'm so embarrassed to admit I loved it as a kid--it's unbelievably shallow!), and I have the My Little Pony series on hold @ work. I'm sure there's a cartoon--or two or three or four...--that I'm forgetting, but I'll just have google it.

128) While We Were Out by Ho Baek Lee
Read: Nov. 2 - 2
My Rating: 5/5
Synopsis: Someone has left the patio door unlocked. It's just the opportunity the rabbit has been waiting for . . . Exploring room after room, picking up this and looking at that, the adorable rabbit exhausts herself and her curiosity before the family returns. Find out what this clever character gets into when she has the place all to herself. This South Korean import, based on a true story, will change forever the way you think about your pets (and where you leave them while you're away).
My Tags: fiction, juvenile, picture book, animals, rabbits
My Notes: Adorable story. Anyone with pets can't help but imagine what kind of mischief their critters get up to while "the people" are away. And, if you have rabbits (I do--2, including one that looks exactly like the one in this book), then the ending is certainly relatable. As far as the "based on a true story" goes, I'm too cynical to believe it, other than sure, maybe their rabbit got loose; but that's it.

129) Then He Ate My Boy Entrancers by Louise Rennison
Read: Nov. 5 - 11
My Rating: 5/5
Synopsis: Let the overseas snogfest begin! Georgia and Jas are off to Hamburger-a-gogo land! Georgia plans to track down Masimo, the Italian-American dreamboat, but after a long week in America, she only succeeds in learning importantish things -- like how to ride a bucking bronco. Will Georgia reel in the Italian dreamboat? Or is she destined to live forever all aloney on her owney?
My Tags: fiction, juvenile, series, confessions of georgia nicolson, england, diaries, humor, romance, friendship, family life, cats, memphis, tennessee
My Notes: Listened to the CD first (ooooh, it's so cute and tiny! and short at 4+ minutes of Q&A) and still have no clue if the woman was Louise Rennison. And if so, was she answering for herself or as Georgia Nicolson? Confusing. Anyway, nothing new, plot-wise (yes, I'm one of those Hamburgerese who says _____-wise), but this book gave me a new fear: lesbian midgets. Now, who thought that one up?? :O And girls practicing kissing on the backs of each other's knees! Somebody had waaay too much time on her hands.

Lucky you. :P I haven't played video games in forever. They kept getting pricier and pricier, so I stopped as a kid.

(wonders when libraries will start carrying video games)

36Ape
marraskuu 11, 2010, 6:11 am

My library carries video games, but they are mostly of the 'children's education' variety, and the few that are actual video games never get checked in because there is an infinitely long waiting list for them. :P

I can't afford video games right now either, but when I was buying them I was buying them used on Amazong. You can find them in "Like New" condition for as low as $10-15 all the time. :)

(And Turok: Evolution was an old one I had for the PlayStation 2)

37saraslibrary
marraskuu 11, 2010, 6:40 pm

Oh awesome! I'll probably regret this later when our entire video games get stolen, but I hope we get games soon. A lot of patrons have showed interest in it, but the higher-ups haven't hinted at adding them. :( I don't see why they don't do like a pin-ball machine thing where patrons can't leave with the game but can at least play it, kind of like in our kids area now. We also do a teens-only video game whatnot thingy I avoid at all costs. Teens. Blech. ::shudders::)

PlayStation 2? My god, I'm old. :D I used to play on a Nintendo, never mind a PlayStation anything.

Is $10-15 good?? :D I'm doing the math in my head, thinking of how many dozen books/CDs/movies I could buy with that! Actually, we have a used game store around here (GameStop or something like that); I should pop in and see what it would cost to play games again. Hmm. So if I go broke, it's all your fault now, Stephen. I don't take any blame for this. ;)

38Ape
marraskuu 11, 2010, 6:55 pm

Well, new games are $60-ish nowadays...it's ridiculous. So $10-$15 is pretty amazing. I've been in Gamestop...they really only knock 5 or 10 dollars off the price for their new games. A new game might be $50 and the used will be $39...it's rather pointless really. $39 is still too much for me! :P

Amazon is great though. Last April I bought Brutal Legend for $11, Red Faction: Guerilla for $15 and Haze for $6, all for the Playstation 3. It's great.

And yes, Playstation 2. I have Nintendo too though! I have a Super Nintendo and a Nintendo 64. :)

39saraslibrary
marraskuu 11, 2010, 7:05 pm

Yes, Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 ring a bell. I think my sis and I gave ours to our cousin or something. Don't know where it's gone to.

(avoids Gamestop) Now that you mention it, I do remember going in the store a year or so ago with some friends, and they didn't buy anything because of the prices. I see your point now. $10-15 is definitely more my (cheap) style.

Woah, and I just flashed on GameBoys. I remember when kids used to get in trouble for playing those during class. Now it's cell phones. Time doesn't really change much--toys are always more fun than school . . . or work. (thinks of how many times she's said "just one more minute!" when her break's ended and her game isn't entirely over) Ah, the joys of having work computers. :) Nothing ever gets done properly.

40Ape
marraskuu 11, 2010, 7:12 pm

Ah yes, handhelds! I hated gameboys, but my opinons of handhelds changed with the DS, which I adore. Mostly because you can actually see it. The old ones were so dark...

Every DS game I own I have 100 percent utterly completed collected every little thing and finished every little challenge and side quest and found every item and every every every thing...because I play it so much. :)

Then again, the same is true for my PS3 games because I can't afford new ones right now. :P

41saraslibrary
marraskuu 11, 2010, 7:18 pm

Holy crap. When do you have time to read?? :D I used to spend hours on one game at a time, never mind having a variety to choose from. It was Mario or . . . uh, Mario. ;)

The only handheld game I own now is a little sudoku one. Plus it glows in the dark. Yay me! I'll ruin my eyesight in no time.

42Ape
marraskuu 11, 2010, 7:24 pm

Well, fortunately, I can't afford to own a LOT of games, so the few I have have been 'perfected' completely. :)

And I have plenty of time to read because I'm not too big of a music fan and I don't like movies/tv...so most of my time is spent either reading, LTing, or playing video games (I'm playing an MMORPG in another window as I type this :P)

CD 12) Mr. Lover Lover: The Best of Shaggy: Part 1 by Shaggy
My Rating: 4/5
Tracks: 1) Boombastic (Sting Remix), 2) In the Summertime (feat. Rayvon), 3) Oh Carolina, 4) Luv Me Luv Me (feat. Janet Jackson), 5) Nice and Lovely, 6) The Train is Coming, 7) Why You Treat Me So Bad, 8) Big Up (feat. My Tags: pop, reggae, best of, cd
My Notes: The Best of Shaggy: Part 1?? Does that mean there'll be Parts 2, 3, and on and on? I highly doubt it. He is still making music (as far as I know), but nothing to promise a Best of CD as good as this. Sorry, just not going to happen. But I mean that in a good way. This is a CD with a lot of good hits and just screams "perfect CD for summer" (as if you couldn't tell from songs like "In the Summertime"). Favorite songs: the obvious "Boombastic", "Oh Carolina", "Luv Me Luv Me", "Nice and Lovely", etc; but the Rambo/"Eye of the Tiger" guitar riff on "Sexy Body Girl" definitely bumps that song up to one of my favorites on here (never heard it before).

DVD 6) Wicked Lake directed by Zach Passero
My Rating: 3/5
Synopsis: Four beautiful but mysterious girls embark on a road trip for a relaxing weekend getaway in the woods. Unbeknownst to them, two clans of deranged male misfits follow them too their secluded and picturesque lakeside cabin in the mountains. The girls appear to be easy prey for the predatory perverts until the fateful stroke of midnight when all hell, literally, breaks loose and the tables are turned!
My Tags: horror, lesbians, witches, NR, dvd
My Notes: I bought this movie for several reasons: 1) I love horror flicks (no matter how bad they are--even ones like this that deserve a lower rating but I gave a 3, 'cause I'm nice like that--ha!); 2) it was on sale for a couple bucks; 3) Al Jourgensen from Ministry cameos as a pervert art instructor (no acting stretch there) and does the music for the film; and well, duh 4) the cover got my attention in the first place (no, that's not Megan Fox, but the actress could easily pass as her). The cover should also give you a clue as to how much more nudity is involved than gore (though the suck-his-brains-through-a-straw scene kinda ranks up there ::dry heaves::). For being low-budget, it's not half-bad (major eye candy for lesbians and straight guys; the special effects are well done), just don't expect much of a plot. Or take it seriously (the cast and crew obviously didn't). It's one of those mindless sit-back-and-enjoy-the-ride type of movies for the sick at heart.

My Rating: 4/5
Tracks: 1) An Eye is Upon You, 2) Supernova Goes Pop, 3) When Worlds Collide, 4) Nobody's Real, 5) System 11:11, 6) Tonight the Stars Revolt!, 7) Automatic, 8) The Son of X-51, 9) Operate, Annihilate, 10) Blast Off to Nowhere, 11) They Know Who You Are, 12) Good Times Roll, 13) Watch the Sky for Me
My Tags: metal, cd
My Notes: There're some really good tracks on here--"When Worlds Collide", "Nobody's Real", "The Son of X-51", "Operate, Annihilate", and even the cover of The Cars song is worth mentioning: "Good Times Roll"--but give me the lead singer's big brother's noise any day: Rob/White Zombie. You can definitely hear/see some resemblances in music/theme/cover art, etc, though Powerman 5000 goes the spacey sci fi route. That's not really my thing, but they're definitely able to pull it off without it sounding goofy.

(rethinks this whole personal assistant thing) Maybe I need to get me a house arrest bracelet thing, so if s/he goes to far, it'll give 'em a nice big ZZZAAAPPPP! Ah yes, piece of mind.

You still interested, Stasia? :D

#58: Why didn't you tell me then?? You could've given it to me. :P

I bought it in middle school -- Bah! And stop trying to make me feel old. I was well out of high school when that CD came out.

Haha, sorry Sara! :P But yes, middle school...I listened to all that pop/metal stuff. The Korns and Slipknots, Rob Zombies and System of a Downs, etc. I eventually...moved on, I suppose you could say. Now I listen to...well...you don't wanna know. :P

Ape, what on earth can you be listening to that you won't tell us about? Russian deathmarch lullabies? Hardcore zombie rap? Michael Bolton? C'mon, it can't be that bad.

Plus, you'll appreciate this music experience - So, I don't know if I've said, but Job #1 is massage therapy. Whenever any of us at work gets a new CD, we take turns making copies for each other so we don't have to spend as much on new music. (And when you listen the same CDs looped for hours on end, you need new music fairly often.) Someone bought a box set of themed music for massage (stress relief, pregnancy, sleeping, etc), and I just grabbed the "sensual" one, thinking it would be maybe a thunderstorm in the background with a little saxophone thrown in (not my preferred choice, but I needed something new), you know nothing unusual. I turned the music on, left the room for the client to get onto the table and I could wash my hands, came back in, and it was going just fine, totally normal.

Until about 20 minutes in, that is, and I think I hear a loud sigh. Hm. Thought the client was sleeping. Then I hear it again, only it's a little...moanier. I look at the client - clearly she's still sleeping as she starts to snore - and then the moans get a little louder and panty. Yep, that's right. There are moany sex noises on this "sensual" massage music CD! I was so embarrassed! I just casually switched CDs as soon as I could, but still I was pray-chanting "please don't wake up please don't wake up please don't wake up" for the next few minutes. Horrifying.

See? Your current music choices cannot be more embarrassing than that one.

And p.s., The pregnancy one? Totally has a heartbeat, which if you're not listening to it to calm down an in-utero baby is Completely Creepy!

I, well, I just listen very dark, morose music nowadays. I strayed from the 'mainstream,' or commercial music, somewhere in high school and never looked back. I can't stand how the songs feel designed to stick in your head, and how there is only 1-2 good 'radio' songs on any given album and how the rest of the CD is always lackluster because the bands themselves are...well, lackluster.

I also prefer more technical music. I listen to music more for the musicians over the vocalist, and I like musicians who play complex stuff that isn't just some 20-something kid strumming the same 2 strings for 3-minutes at a time. I hate how anyone learning guitar can pick up their instrument and play just about any classic rock song in such a short time. I just like things that are mind-blowingly complex. And lyrics? *shrug* Who needs them, I just want to hear a drummer doing something that causes my mouth to gape.

So, I've found myself listening to some very weird and 'against-the-grain' music. Can't really help what I like, I guess! :(

...oh, and the 'sensual music' story? ROFL!

(mind wanders to Laura's assumption: Michael Bolton)

But hey, I'm a massive loser, because I actually own a best of Michael Bolton CD! :o How scary is that, huh?

#61: (laughing her hairy ass off) That is freakin' HILARIOUS, Laura! XD I think I'll skip on the pregnancy/in utero CD, but I'd love to find a sensual CD like that.

#63: Texas?? Omg, the heat! (passes out just imagining 80+ degree weather) I do have family down there, but I don't think they'd want me moving in with them with my circus of pets and library of books, not to mention my odd little quirks. (sighs) I guess I'll just have to go personal assistant-less until I win that Lotto. :(

62: I agree, a lot of pop music these days is just that - 2 or 3 chords, some nonsensical rhyme-y lyrics (I currently have a Justin Bieber song playing on my iPod, and it's fitting the stereotype PERFECTLY) - and while I do enjoy pop stuff, if I want to really enjoy listening to music I tend to put on classical music (contemporary, baroque, whatever), or instrumental CDs. It does seem like almost anyone can learn most classic rock (except for maybe some Zeppelin stuff) with just a few basics.

No shrugging or apologies needed for what you like, Stephen. It's just nice to find someone who appreciates music on a more "intellectual" level, I guess you could say, and who isn't satisfied with what is played for you. Yay you! And I'm certainly not bashing popular music fans or anything (I mean, clearly I have guilty pleasures, including Mr. Justin Beiber, Michael Bolton, Milli Vanilli, Britney Spears, etc...), but I like a lot of variety in music and like to switch things up fairly often. Any recommendations for groups/people you really like listening to?

64: Yeah, not much shakes me as far as what people tell me, or if they have emotional reactions during the massage, but the very last thing I want to encourage is any kind of "funny business". Thankfully the client was a regular of mine, and she has a good sense of humor, so if she would have heard it I'm sure she would have laughed it off and said something like "Uh Laura, what the hell is this you're listening to now?", but it was still mortifying. Also, since I tend to just put all CDs into my iTunes library and automatically drag any work-related ones into a playlist, I'm glad I remembered to remove that particular one before I went to a chair massage job where it would be played for up to a dozen people at a time over a stereo system. Oy.

65: Sorry about the job, Stasia. It did seem to good to be true. Maybe we'll have to come down to visit your new indie bookstore instead! That place sounds like it will be fantastic, and a lot of trouble too. I'm jealous.

Yeah, I can certainly be put into the non-intellectual/pop-listening crowd, because I use music for my mood than anything else. It helps with exercise, too, especially the high-energy stuff.

"Funny business"?? Why, Laura, whatever do you mean? 0:) ::halo falls off her head:: I'm sure you get your fair share of pervy clients. My hat goes off to you, 'cause I couldn't get paid enough to touch anyone.

New indie bookstore? Wait--did Stasia open her own bookstore or is there just a new one nearby?

One of my favorite huge bookstores is down in Portland, Oregon: Powell's Books. It's 68,000 sq feet with something like 3 or 4 stories to it (I forget; it's been awhile since I've been there). It's pretty awesome, but parking is a pain, since it's downtown.

Doesn't look like it's 68,000 sq feet and multi-storied, does it? But take my word for it--it's HUGE!

74alcottacre
marraskuu 14, 2010, 3:15 am

You're right--the Strand and Powell's sound very similar. I wonder if NY has the same hippy panhandlers Oregon does? :D There's usually a very "interesting" gathering of people near the doors, then it gets somewhat normal inside with people actually looking at books--or trying to read the signs to figure out where they are . . . and how to get out once they're done shopping. :)

My Tags: industrial, cd
My Notes: I may have heard of Mindless Self Indulgence before, but I certainly never heard their music. Believe me, it's hard to forget. I'm not even sure how to describe it--a mix between punk, synth/pop rock, and rap (yes, rap). I just figured 1) hey, it's $2, so I'm not getting totally ripped off if I hate it, and 2) it's not very likely Metropolis Records would put out anything I didn't halfway like. Right from track 1 ("Shut Me Up", which is probably my favorite song on here so far), I got sucked into the whole frenetic energy of this CD--it actually put a smile on my face. (insert big cheesey grin on Sara's face here) If you're looking for something crazy fast to listen to (10 tracks @ 26 minutes & 30 minutes--'nuf said), then this CD's worth listening to. * Underworld: Evolution (Love this movie/series.)
Oh, me too! Except the last one...but I loved the first two! :)

Laura: It's just nice to find someone who appreciates music on a more "intellectual" level,

Yeah...about that...*ahem* Well, I like metal. I guess not generally thought of as intellectual. But I like it fast and technical and complex. Unfortunately everyone's thoughts on the genre are that it's a bunch of monkeys hammering on poorly-tuned instruments and writing songs about serial killers. Well, they're right about the lyrics at least, which is why I disregard them...but man, the musicians. I don't know if I've heard anyone do anything like what some of those Technical Death Metal bands do on guitar and drums. I have to admit though, I'm usually rather ashamed of my taste in music...all the covers are covered in gore and the song titles are just... *blech* but I love what these people are doing on their instruments. Their musical ability is...astounding, sometimes...it's too bad people don't take them seriously because of their obnoxious vocalist who scream alot and the violent imagery found on the covers. :(

Any recommendations for groups/people you really like listening to?

Well, I was going to post my top-10 playlist from Windows Media Player...but it seems all I've been listening to is much mellower atmospheric/wonky-themed music. Hmmm. Well, here it is anyway. *shrug*

Star Crossed by Arcturus
Ad Astra by Arcturus (Instrumental)
Torsteins Kvæði by Týr
Die Rache Krieg Lied Der Assyriche by Nile
A Thousand Rivers by Dismal Euphony
Something in the Way by Nirvana
Julian (I'd Give My Heart) by Within Temptation
Berserkergang by Einherjer
Hammar Haus by Einherjer
To Holmgard and Beyond by Turisas

Ahhh, I SO love the vocalist for Within Temptation on "The Silent Force." She's dreamy...vocally. :)

This is actually very different from the music I've spent this whole post describing. Hmph! My tastes might be changing without me realizing it. None of this is particularly technical...Hm! Here are a few technical songs I adore...though I warn you...it's loud and 'scary' and it's hard to appreciate the artists if you focus on the (terrible) vocalists, who are only good at yelling things. Oh, and the song titles... *ahem* Yeah, forget them. :P

Guitarists:
Intestinal Incubation by Necrophagist
Advanced Corpse Tumor by Necrophagist

Drummers:
Adeste InfIdelis by Cryptopsy
Blood on the Swans by Kataklysm

These men are...ROBOTS, I think. It's the only thing that makes sense...

Looks like I'll be googling music later tonight as well! I haven't heard of any of these bands, but I'm open to anything. Thanks for sharing!

Sara, holy cow, that guy totally looks like Efron's brother - it's kinda freaky! Speaking of, I don't know if you have ever seen "Firefly", but a little Zac E plays one of the main characters in a few flashbacks. He still has the same face, just a smaller body. Oh, and, there is a print ad for a ranch dressing with two kids sitting on front porch steps looking all excited about veggies and dressing. The girl looks EXACTLY like Zac in a dress. It's really disturbing. If I remembered how to post images here, I'd try and hunt it down to post, but I can't be buggered right now.

Off to try and read some more in leperdbunny's Sunday readathon, then it's off to see "Morning Glory" with some friends.

intestinal incubation...it's a lovely thought, no? -- Uh . . . no. XP

Idk. I still wouldn't think Decrepit Birth would be as embarrassing as, say, my Ace of Base CD. Or my NSync CD. Or my MC Hammer CD. Or . . . never mind; we'll be here all day. I'd probably say Decrepit Birth instead just to avoid saying what I'm actually listening to. :D

if someone else forces it upon me by posting it on my thread? I'm perfectly innocent! -- Exactly! That's what I always say. Mock sincerity: "Oh no. Please don't post graphic photos of unbearably hot guys on my thread. I would be so offended and turned off."

#87: I know! Isn't that freaky? I think Hollywood has some kind of a laboratory where they're churning out these little blonde-haired-blue-eyed freaks of nature. So many actors look alike, it's hard to tell them apart anymore (unless you scan their barcode on the back of their necks).

He still has the same face, just a smaller body. -- LOL! For some reason, all I could picture was a Zac Efron bobblehead.

Oh, and no, unfortunately I've never seen Firefly. Wanted to, just never have. :(

Zac in a dress. -- Hmm, methinks that's not a stretch in imagination. I could totally see him in a dress when he thinks no one's looking, so not to worry about knocking yourself out looking for that photo. I did a quick Google search, but got a Ranch dressing overdose. :X Not one person in the pics.

Hope you have a good readathon! I'd join ya, but my living quarters look like a heavily-used NYC alleyway. Must clean house today. Oh, and hope Morning Glory is good. 131) The Good Body by Eve Ensler
Read: Nov. 13 - 14
My Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: Botox, bulimia, breast implants, stomach tucks - Eve Ensler is back, with another round of poignant and hilarious stories about the secret lives of women. Here are our intimate obsessions laid bare - who hasn't hungered for shapelier thighs, a nip or tuck or just a little piercing? Ensler toured the world asking women about their anatomical obsessions and gives us their stories: a Puerto Rican's ruminations on fat and family, an Indian beauty's obsession with hair, an LA woman's ultimate concession to her husband. She frames these stories with her own personal journey, serving up riotous excerpts from her lifelong dialogue with her belly - a sassy and conniving antagonist in its own right. We follow her through the serial seductions of low carb diets, ab rollers and personal trainer to the wise words of a woman who taught her how to love her body, and see that it was good.
My Tags: nonfiction, feminism, diet, essays, health, sex, sociology
My Notes: Even though this is my second Eve Ensler book (I read The Vagina Monologues last year--also very good), I feel I can safely say I love her books (even though LT keeps predicting I won't). It might just be me, but I didn't find this one as funny as The Vagina Monologues. The places Eve visits and the women she interviews have such appalling stories, it was hard to even smile at their own jokes. It all left me a little more depressed than it should have, seeing as Eve Ensler is such an inspiring and upbeat feminist. Maybe that's due to my own body image problems? Who knows.

88: I have multiple NSync CDs (saw them in concert too), MC Hammer's CD ... multiple "cool" offenses, but I don't really care! And BTW, you aren't really missing anything with Justin Bieber. Not to offend any potential Beliebers on this site, but the kid is a scrawny, parenthesis-shaped, swirly-haired ninny who happens to release moderately catchy pop music. Please do not injure yourselves trying to look him up. I'll try and link a pic of the ranch dressing ad too - it's really disconcerting. And Firefly is probably one of my favorite shows EVER. If you have time/inclination in the next year or so to watch it, I totally would. It's just the one season too (well, and there's a movie) so you won't get hooked into some 5 DVD/10 season deal with it. Plus, I'm basically in love with Nathan Fillion, so I may be just a smidge biased.

89: I've never read (or seen) anything Eve Ensler-related, but this book looks like I could get something out of it. As a chick with multiple multiple multiple body image issues, I could use a literary smack upside the head. Surely it can't just be me who wants to be invisible every time she has to go out in public?!?

#90: Yay! Thank god I'm not the only one who has NSync and MC Hammer CDs. :D Yeah, I think that's probably one of the few nice things about getting older and out of school--you tend to care less what other people think. By the time I'm in my 90's, I'll probably be to the point where I can wear nothing but a thong and be happy--though I'm sure it'll be therapy-inducing for other people to see me that way. :D

Nope, hadn't planned on putting Bieber's CD(s?) on hold. I have way too many of my own junk to listen to first. I kinda feel sorry for the kid. He looks about 9 years old, but I'm sure he's already addicted to something now. :( Not too many people make it after getting that famous.

(eagerly awaits the creepy Zac Efron chic pic)

I've heard Firefly is pretty amazing, so ok, you got me to put a hold of season 1 on hold @ work. :) I had to google that Nathan Fillion guy, because I couldn't remember what he looked like. I was surprised to see he had been in Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place. I loved that show back in the day and was seriously bummed when it stopped airing.

I could use a literary smack upside the head.

(smacks Laura in the head with her copy of The Good Body) j/k! :)

Regarding Eve Ensler: her books are super short (around 100 pages each) and ridiculously wide-spaced, so you could easily finish one in a day. They're certainly too short to be self-help books, but just the fact her books are out there is wonderfully empowering. And no, you're definitely not the only person who wants to be invisible when in public! I think that's a pretty global thing. I, for one, would love to be invisible. (minds goes in totally inappropriate places with that idea)

DVD 7) The Quiet directed by Jamie Babbit
My Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: This erotic and suspenseful tale of sex, lies and betrayal stars Elisha Cuthbert ("The Girl Next Door") as Nina Deer, a pretty cheerleader whose life is turned upside-down by the arrival of her parents' godchild Dot (Camilla Belle, "When a Stranger Calls"), a deaf and mute girl recently orphaned by her father's death. Although Nina looks upon Dot's deafness with disdain, her family and friends develop a strange attraction to her, and Dot soon becomes a sounding board for everyone's heaviest burdens. But when Nina becomes convinced that Dot is hiding a few secrets of her own, she decides to confess a family secret so disturbing, it cannot be ignored. Also starring Martin Donovan (TV's "Weeds") and Edie Falco (TV's "The Sopranos").
My Tags: drama, thriller, deafness, abuse, R, dvd
My Notes: Some pretty unlikable characters (namely the incestuous father and daughter duo played by Martin Donovan and Elisha Cuthbert) and the movie kind of lulled in places, but I still really liked it. More of a drama than thriller.

DVD 8) Tenderness directed by John Polson
My Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: A career-hardened detective (Oscar winner Russell Crowe) becomes obsessed with the early release of Eric, a teenaged serial killer he helped send to prison. While the detective trails the young psychopath, Eric is joined by a troubled girl who knows the predator's darkest secrets and desires. Now the detective must race against time to prevent another murder, unaware of the painful truth hiding beneath the surface of this riveting psychological thriller.
My Tags: drama, thriller, crime, new york, R, dvd, checked out from work
My Notes: I didn't know what to expect from this movie when I put it on hold. It was just one of many, many movies that pass through my hands every day, and I happened to read the summary real quick (Russell Crowe--teenaged serial killer--psychopath--all those fun little eye-catchers ;) and was instantly intrigued. It's definitely "an edge-of-your-seat thriller", and I was stuck in front of the tube through most of it (certainly the last half), but it wasn't as violent and flashy as I've come to expect from most thrillers, which was a nice change of pace. Also a plus: most of the big-named actors play slightly minor roles to those of the teenage girl and boy, so it was easier to enjoy the story more. I'll certainly be on the lookout for Robert Cormier's book now (Tenderness).

132) The Berenstain Bears and the Week at Grandma's by Stan & Jan Berenstain
Read: Nov. 20 - 20
My Rating: 5/5
Synopsis: Brother and Sister worry about spending a week at Gran and Gramp's house. By the end of the visit they've learned a lot from their lively grandparents--and the older bears have discovered how wonderful it is to be grandparents.
My Tags: fiction, juvenile, bears, series, the berenstain bears, family life, picture book
My Notes: Couldn't really related to this Berenstain Bears book as a kid (uh, my family's a wee bit "interesting", to put it nicely ;); and I never did understand why Grandpa Berenstain is left out of the title (too bad mine couldn't have been erased that easily *snorts*). I loved how Brother and Sister put it mildly that their grandparents are "sort of ... old", as tactfully as kids say things. Cute re-read.

133) Just My Friend and Me by Mercer Mayer
Read: Nov. 21 - 21
My Rating: 5/5
Synopsis: The very popular Little Critter has a friend over to play and tries his best to be a good host. It's a long afternoon. After his friend damages Little Critter's bike by accident, leaves him in the tree house without a ladder, and doesn't help clean up his room, Little Critter decides that playing alone isn't always bad. Mercer Mayer's dry and gentle humor provides another funny-but-true picture-book treat.
My Tags: fiction, juvenile, series, little critter, friendship, picture book

DVD 9) Joshua directed by George Ratcliff
My Rating: 3/5
Synopsis: Evil has a new name in this terrifying suspense-thriller that "keeps us guessing until the stunner finish" (New York Daily News)! Brad and Abby Cairn (Sam Rockwell and Vera Farmiga) seem to have it all: a happy marriage, a spacious Manhattan apartment, a gifted nine-year-old son and a new arrival on the way. But young Joshua's resentment toward his baby sister triggers a series of tragic events that fill the Cairn household with utter despair and unspeakable horror. Is it all a series of eerie coincidences . . . or the calculated agenda of a sinister sibling with the perfect plan for revenge?
My Tags: drama, horror, thriller, new york, R, dvd
My Notes: Proves my point that all kids are evil. Or just ones whose parents have a straight razor painted on their wall. Really. Why give the kid ideas, huh? This movie's kind of reminiscent of Orphan (Vera Farmiga playing the mom to a disturbed child), except in this one, the mother's, oh, slightly neurotic--to the point, she was more frightening than Joshua. This is probably one of the few movies I've seen where the rating was decided by "some disturbing behavior by a child", if that's any indication of violence (hint: there is some suggested violence against animals for the squeamish pet folk). So, people who like their horror light and their dramas breaching the psych ward, then this is worth a shot. Favorite quote: Joshua to bum: "I'll give you five dollars if I can throw a rock at you."

Martin, Secrets of Dripping Fang #4: Fall of the House of Mandible by Dan Greenburg, The Flying Flea, Callie, and Me by Carol Wallace & Bill Wallace, and Judy Moody Predicts the Future by Megan McDonald (a series I swear I'll start . . . eventually). All for $4. Not too bad.

134) Chobits: Volume 6 by Clamp
Read: Nov. 22 - 25
My Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: For most people, persocoms represent technology at its finest--after all, they can do anything you program them to and they make great looking companions. But for Yumi Oumura, persocoms bring out her deepest insecurities, and not without reason. Just as people once became addicted to their computers, many people are now addicted to their persocoms to the exclusion of other human beings. Because persocoms look so much like people, it's more than just addiction--it's an emotional bond that some would call love. Ordinarily this love would be considered one-sided, as how could a computer love a person back? When the persocom in question is the mysterious Chi, perhaps it's not such an impossibility.

Oh, all the "fun" I'll miss tomorrow. ;) Anywho, here's my movie stash from Big Lots ($17 w/o tax):

* Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging -- I guess "Full-Frontal" was a bit too suggestive, so they went with "Perfect" instead. ::shrugs:: No way will I remember that. But the movie's pretty good so far. I didn't want to wait around at work for my hold to come in either.
* St. Trinian's School for Bad Girls -- This one's also been on Hold forever, so again, I bought it instead of waiting. Impulse buying at its worst, I know.
* The Secret -- The David Duchovny/Olivia Thirlby one. (So many movies with "Secret" in the title.)

I would to do grocery shopping online too. By the time I do meal plans, grocery lists, grocery shopping and putting away groceries, I have spent a good 6 hours doing the grocery shopping :)

142saraslibrary
marraskuu 26, 2010, 1:24 am

Meal plans . . . ok, now that's a totally alien term to me. :D I have 2 requirements: 1) can I eat it raw?, and 2) can it go in the toaster? And that sums up my "meal plans". :) I seriously hate to cook. And even toasting stuff can be hazardous. Just the other day, I burned some toast, and the entire kitchen filled up with smoke. Put more gray hairs on my poor mom's head; she thought we were having a house fire.

Anywho, if you're really interested, Albertsons and Safeway do the online grocery thing. I think they still do, anyway. They're a little too overpriced, imho, and don't usually carry much vegan/vegetarian food (not that that should matter to most people, I know :), so I just go up the road to Fred Meyer (aka Kroger, Smith's, etc, depending on where you are in the US).

143alcottacre

I love cooking, which is a good thing, since the people in my house love to eat :) We eat vegetarian every other night - a compromise worked out between Kerry and me when we first married, since I was a vegetarian and he was not and had no intention of switching.

I use Kroger for grocery shopping. All of the Safeways down here closed years ago and I agree with you about Albertsons being overpriced.

My mom did Black Friday last year. I believe her words were "NEVER AGAIN!" Hehe...

I do a lot of shopping online too. I buy things used on amazon for so ridiculously cheap...it's wonderful! :)

I usually go crazy and indulge in a bunch of video games this time of year. It's cold, I can only read so much in a day, so why not? Last year I bought 6-7 games around this time of year and probably didn't spend more than $75 overall. Can't really afford that this year, but I still might 'splurge' and buy a couple for $5-$10. Yay for Amazon. :D

145LauraBrook
marraskuu 26, 2010, 10:11 am

I'd love to do online grocery shopping, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Despite the fact that there are 3 grocery stores within a 2 mile radius of my house, it always seems that it's too far away, or they're really busy, so I end up going when I'm out of everything and on a Wednesday morning too so it's not crazy busy.

I used to really enjoy shopping, but that was when I actually made money! Only went Black Friday shopping once (I think we left the house at 5, not terrible) and I have no plans on ever doing it again. People lose any kind of basic politeness (which is already severely lacking) or rationale. Yes, they have great deals, but I'd rather order it online and save myself the hassle AND still get to stay in my pj's. I do plan on going shopping today to both Borders and B&N to use their awesome coupons on season 3 of "Lark Rise to Candleford" since my Mom and I both love the show. But we're not going until noon so hopefully the stampedes will already be at home with their feet up.

146saraslibrary

#143: the people in my house love to eat -- That's definitely a plus. I feel bad for my mom, who loves to cook too, but I'm such a picky eater, I usually don't eat it. Me: brat child. (hangs head in shame)

That's awesome that you two get along, food-wise. I tried dating guys who were meat-eaters, but it just didn't work out for me. And unfortunately, there aren't too many vegan guys where I live. Loads of lesbians, but I'm not that desperate yet. :D

#144: My mom has the same motto during the whole holiday rush. But what did she go out and do today? Shop! What makes me feel guilty is that the stuff she got was for me. I love the stuff she got me--my own vacuum (I think she was trying to tell me something about my room--lol) and a small portable heater (that I use on my rabbits instead--sshhh!--bunnies get cold, too). But only moms know how to make you feel guilty for waking up at early morning hours to buy you surprise gifts.

Bah. Totally went off subject there, Stefano. Sorry. :D

Honestly, I think $75 is pretty good, considering you're buying video games. Those things aren't cheap. And I totally agree with you--even though I love books, if all I had to do was read, I would seriously go mental(er). (Is that a word?) That's why I love movies and music, too. And LT. Can't forget LT.

#145: Three grocery stores within 2 miles of you is pretty darn good. I think Fred Meyer is the closest to me (app. 1 mile--up hill ::pant, pant::); but then I'll see a shopping district where there are a couple grocery stores across from each other, and then another one a block away. Can't they space them out better? Or maybe I'm just grouchy, because I force myself to walk to and from the grocery store, which isn't all too fun when it's raining, and you're carrying 20 lbs of cat litter, plus bags. Good workout, though. Ha!

You said it perfectly about Black Friday shopping: People lose any kind of basic politeness (which is already severely lacking) or rationale. Seriously, some people turn into little Bridezillas when it comes to shopping, especially around the holidays. And any kind of shopping in your pj's is the perfect kind of shopping, imho! :D Btw, how did the shopping go? I've never seen Lark Rise to Candleford, so I'll have to google that in a sec. I plan on going book shopping this evening, but we'll see . . . .

Btw, just be glad you live in such a free country. Apparently, a UK grocery is banning people from shopping in their pj's. :o Oh, the horrors! Somehow, I just don't see the US doing the same. Aren't we the ones who invented fast food and drive-thrus? We should bask in our laziness, I say! *snort* I just may have to change into my pj's before going book shopping tonight, just to make my lazy American stand. ;)

135) Chobits: Volume 7 by Clamp
Read: Nov. 26 - 26
My Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: Can a computer ever replace a human being? Minoru Kokubunji built Yuzuki to replace his sister after her passing. While Yuzuki certainly feels like a sister to Minoru, the more time he spends with her, the more he loves her for who she is. Chi was also built as a substitute family member. Back then she was known as Elda, and she and her "sister" Freya were built to be the daughters of their creator and his wife. They behaved and looked like real children, and they even had the ability to love. But something went wrong--very wrong. Now Chi must find her "someone just for her" before an even worse disaster strikes.
My Tags: fiction, juvenile, sci fi, romance, manga, series, chobits, robots, tokyo, japan
My Notes: This volume answered a few questions (specifically who that identical girl is that talks with Chi, and how Chi came to be abandoned in a heap of garbage), but it also ended with quite a few more questions (who're the persocoms tracking Chi? what's so important about Chi?). I still don't know what the heck's going on, but I will say this for the Chobits series: very addictive!

DVD 10) Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging directed by Gurinder Chadha
My Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: On the verge of turning 15, Georgia sets her sights on the new guy at school, "gorgeous sex-god" Robbie, who plays bass for the Stiff Dylans. Unfortunately, Robbie happens to already be dating her evil archrival: blonde, perfect Lindsay. With her flamboyantly dressed cat Angus and her girl posse, the Ace Gang, by her side, Georgia sets her mad schemes in motion to nab the boyfriend of her dreams and have the best birthday party ever. Based on the popular book series by one of the national best-selling authors, Louise Rennison, Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging is a wonderfully funny coming-of-age hit!
My Tags: comedy, drama, romance, england, based on book, series, PG13, dvd
My Notes: It's not completely true to the first two books, but what movie is? There are little changes, like Dr Clooney is Interior Decorator Clooney and--*ahem*--something else, and the title is slightly changed from "Full-Frontal Snogging" to "Perfect Snogging", maybe because "Full-Frontal" was too suggestive? Who knows. At least all the actors were pretty believable as the characters in the book, except for maybe my two favorites: Libby and Angus, who I thought would be total devil's spawns in the movie, but they're not. (sigh) Not to mention Angus looks nothing like the cat on some of the book covers. (Wasn't he supposed to be the size of a small Labrador?) But there're loads of fun extras--interviews, bloopers, whatnot--so that kind of placated me. Definitely recommended to fans of the Georgia Nicolson series.

Going back to Black Friday shopping - many of the women in my family get together and go out on Black Friday - more for the fun of it than getting good deals. (We like those too). There are probably 10 of us, the oldest being my nana. We wait in the car drinking coffee while we wait for the crazy lines to go in, and then we go and enjoy ourselves. This year we were up at 3:00 and I only bought 1 thing! Part of the craziness this year was seeing the line for Target wrap around the outside perimeter of the store with people waiting to get inside!

(oops, backing up) #154: I could probably talk to women easier if they were all lesbians -- I do that with guys, pretend they're gay, serial killers, or pedophiles--or d) all the above! :D I don't know if imagining women as lesbians would be good for you, though. Just saying, your brain might start going in inappropriate places while you're talking to her. Kind of hard to talk to someone when you're imagining them licking chocolate off some other chick's body. Oh, and speaking of which, you should put this on your Dear Santa list:

#156: But then why would they need a man around if another woman can give them more pleasure? And even if they wanted a, uh, male appendage, they could always just order one (or more) online. I guess I just don't understand the lesbian appeal some guys have. Don't get me wrong--I think gay guys together is pretty hot--but I know I'm just sitting this one out, 'cause I'm missing the junk they're looking for.

#157: I heard about lines @ Target, too, this year! One store (I can't remember if it was Target or Walmart) took almost an hour for everyone to finally file in. Just crazy. Now, I can totally understanding doing it as a group (that would actually be fun bonding time), but me at 3 AM??!! Bwahaha! Even I scare myself first thing in the morning. No way would I make other people see me that washed-out and bleary-eyed.

DVD 11) Madhouse directed by William Butler
My Rating: 5/5
Synopsis: The infamous Cunningham Hall Mental Facility houses the most psychotic and dangerous mental patients in the country. When a staff nurse is murdered, Clark Stevens, a new psychiatry intern, starts digging for answers and soon realizes that there is something very wrong with the people at the asylum . . . but it's not just the patients.
My Tags: horror, thriller, R, dvd
My Notes: Horror flicks involving mental institutes always draw me in for some reason, maybe because I grew up near one (went to high school and college right across from it, and even had family work there)--or maybe because I belong in one. :D Either way, I really enjoyed the movie. It's quick (80-odd minutes), the bad guy's fairly sympathetic, and (yay!) there's no happy-ever-after ending (well, maybe for the bad guy ;). There are minimal special features, but "Clark's 'Hello' Reel" is pretty amusing (he does say 'hello' a lot in this movie; I hadn't noticed before). Worth a second viewing to catch the commentary with Joshua Leonard (actor: "Clark Stevens") and William Butler (director), which I'll finish. Eventually.

DVD 12) Pulse directed by Marcus Adams
My Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: On a lonely freeway late one night, Senga (Madeleine Stowe) and teenage daughter Nat (Mischa Barton) have a long journey home ahead of them. As they travel through the darkness they encounter a series of surreal sights--a vacation couple photographing the debris of a car crash, a baby crawling in the middle of the highway, and a tow-truck driver (Norman Reedus) trawling the night, waiting for accidents to happen. Breaking from their trip and its nightmarish visions, they meet a mysterious backpacker at a rest stop (Bijou Phillips) who entices Nat away with the promise of freedom and a new life with a young blood-lusting cult. With her maternal instincts kicked into overdrive, Senga gives chase into a deranged world where she must confront nightmares from her past to protect her daughter.
My Tags: horror, thriller, auto accidents, R, dvd
My Notes: Pulse didn't make a whole lot of sense to me (especially the ending), but then so what? I still enjoyed it. It was very David Lynch-y. It had a vampire quality to it, which I liked, with all the blood-drinking scenes. And I loved that the movie takes place almost entirely at night. It gives it a more dreamy atmosphere that way, and fit perfectly with the times I would watch it right before bed. Not to mention, Orbital does a great job creating some ambient, moody music. My biggest gripe, though, has nothing to do with the movie, but with the English subtitles--or lack of them is what I mean. I always watch movies with subtitles turned on, so I felt like I was missing out on something when the characters spoke too softly. Still, worth the couple bucks I bought it for.

>153 saraslibrary:: I hated the Georgia Nicolson film... I was soooo disappointed. Dave the Laugh wasn't a laugh at all, just an awkward actor who blurted the occasional line, and I was very frustrated at the "core message" of the film. Isn't half the point of the books that she's angsty against her parents, which makes for some hilarious banter? In the film, the message ended up being "my parents are cool", which was completely NOT the way the books went, even up to the end of the series. I thought they missed a lot of potential humor there, and you're right, Libby and Angus didn't live up to their literary counterparts. In all, I felt the film was sorely lacking and I can't say I'll ever watch it again or recommend it. But, if another fan of the series enjoyed it, then I'm glad it found an audience somewhere :)

#177: I know what you mean about Dave the Laugh. He was barely in it, and probably the only funny thing he did was light his farts on fire (why his pants didn't catch on fire, I don't know). I know movies have to have this whole message where the main character grows up by the end of the story, but it was very unGeorgialike in spots. Still, as just a plain kids' movie, I liked it (well, I could've lived without the saccharine ending). It was a nice bit of fluff between some pretty grim movies I had been watching (Joshua and Madhouse).

Ala. woman charged in theft of 200 library books
December 02, 2010 6:22 PM EST
ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) — Librarians in Anniston, Ala., said they knew someone was stealing thousands of dollars worth of books, and now they believe they know who did it: A jobless woman who likes to read.

Anniston police say 42-year-old Regina M. Smith was arrested Wednesday on a felony theft charge after officials at the local library reported that a woman was seen stealing two books.

Police said they determined Smith had taken 222 books valued at $5,432 over the past couple of years — mainly crime novels, mysteries and vampire stories.

Investigator Kyle Price said Smith has a library card but sneaked books out and kept them rather than borrowing them legally, he said.

Court records didn't show whether Smith had an attorney. Her bond was set at $10,000.

I know I shouldn't admit this, but I don't feel as perturbed that she stole books. I almost want to say, "Good! At least someone's reading," but that would probably send the wrong message--steal books, not CDs, DVDs, magazines, or, for pete's sake, our computers!

136) 101 Reasons Why a Cat is Better Than a Man by Allia Zobel-Nolan
Read: Dec. 4 - 4
My Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: Honestly, now: Which would you rather face--life without cats or life without men? If you had any hesitation about opting for a feline companion, you need to read 101 Reasons Why a Cat Is Better than a Man. It provides irreverent, occasionally imprudent, always on-target confirmation of what women have long suspected: You're better off with a cat.
My Tags: nonfiction, humor, animals, cats, series, 101 reasons why a cat is better than a man
My Notes: I had to say, "Wanna bet?", to a few of these reasons, like "Cats are loyal..." (ha ha ha! yeah, right. mine love anybody with food and a warm lap), "Cats love to cuddle" (again, ha!), and "Cats don't have beer bellies" (ooo-kay, double Z boobs then? 'cause mine definitely have something down there). For some reason, this book reminded me of All I Need to Know I Learned from My Cat by Suzy Becker, probably because of the messy illustrations and mild humor. It's a good picture book to kill a few minutes with, but certainly not a have-to-have.

DVD 13) Idle Hands directed by Rodman Flender
My Rating: 5/5
Synopsis: The devil will find work for idle hands to do . . . but what happens when he chooses the laziest teen slacker in the world to do his dirty work? Anton Tobias (Devon Sawa, "Wild America") is a channel-surfing, junk-food munching, couch potato burn-out who can't control the murderous impulses of his recently possessed hand. With the help of his zombiefied buddies, Mick (Seth Green, "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me") and Pnub (Elden Henson, "The Mighty"), Anton's got to stop the rampaging devil appendage before it takes total control of his life and ruins any chance he has with class hottie Molly (Jessica Alba, "Never Been Kissed"). Vivica A. Fox ("Independence Day") and Jack Noseworthy ("The Brady Bunch Movie") co-star in this wickedly funny horror comedy.
My Tags: horror, comedy, halloween, zombies, california, R, dvd
My Notes: Ok, I'm about 10 years late in watching this movie (I had wanted to see it when it came out in 1999 or 2000), but better late than never, right? Lots of gross-out fun, great cast (even if most of them stay in their usual roles--Seth Green as a smartass stoner and Jessica Alba as a half-naked bimbo--but really, that's why I like watching their movies), and good soundtrack (I'll be looking for that next). Message 199 200 . . . oh, dear. Now I know the fear some people have when looking at the scale first thing in the morning. And I'm nowhere near 150 books . . . and it takes forever for my browser to load threads that are in the 200+ region . . . (spaz attack!) Argh!

Ok, ok. (practices meditating)

So . . . if I can read 15 or so books before reaching 220 or 230 or whenever my browser stops loading, I should be ok. (makes a vow to herself to never have a thread as long as Stasia's or Stephen's--EVER!) Uh, ignore that if you are either Stasia or Stephen. :P

ETA: Thank you soooo much, Stephen, for throwing off my count! :P

My Rating: 5/5
Synopsis: After a bulletin board falls on Stanley while he's sleeping, he finds that being flat has its advantages.
My Tags: fiction, juvenile, fantasy, humor, series, flat stanley
My Notes: Cute idea. The parents, however, felt very dated ("both very much in favor of politeness and careful speech"), so I wasn't too surprised to see this one copyrighted back in 1964.

143) Nancy Drew: Girl Detective #3: The Haunted Dollhouse by Stefan Petrucha
Read: Dec. 6 - 6
My Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: Everyone in town is dressing up like it's 1930--but the fun is interrupted when the dolls in Emma Blavatsky's antique dollhouse start depicting strange crimes that soon come true in real life! But when Nancy stakes out the dollhouse--she witnesses a doll version of herself murdered!
My Tags: fiction, juvenile, suspense, series, nancy drew girl detective, graphic novel, dolls
My Notes: I've really gotten into graphic novels/manga these past few years (if you haven't noticed :), so I really don't have any complaints about there being an illustrated Nancy Drew spin-off series. It was the weak plot, unfortunately, that did it for me. The bad guy is pretty see-through (no pun intended, seeing as there's a slight supernatural/ghost element to the story); and the fact that everyone (even the police!?) keep with the "spirit of Nostalgia Week" by dressing in 1930's fashion and driving old cars, etc was way too far-fetched to believe (though the idea was still kind of fun). Despite that, I'm eager to read the other Nancy Drew graphic novels (this was my first). This series is worth trying at least once if you're a Nancy Drew fan.

#143: There are Nancy Drew comics? Of course there are. There are comics of everything nowadays.

There are comics of everything nowadays. -- Exactly! :) I think there are even comics of the Hardy Boys too. (Couldn't have one without the other, of course!) I hope you enjoy them, if/when you find them. Graphic novels are pretty fun to read, imho. Most of my teachers frowned on them as appropriate reading material for kids, so I never got into them until I was an adult. Too bad for me. Anywho (babbling again), good luck with your Nancy Drew comic book hunt! :)

144) Redrum 327: Volume 1 by Ya-Seong Ko
Read: Dec. 7 - 7
My Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: When a group of seven young college students goes off to enjoy a weekend getaway at a remote mountain villa, secrets that haunt the friends are unveiled--revealing bizarre love triangles, tragic relationships, and deadly betrayal. And when hallucinations and strange disappearances begin, their dream vacation turns into a nightmare...
My Tags: fiction, juvenile, horror, manga, korea, series, redrum 327
My Notes: For some reason, this reminded me of a Christopher Pike book (take your pick--Final Friends, Slumber Party, etc.), because of it's slightly misleading "horror" tag when it's more of a suspense thriller involving Pike's usual romance drama (she likes him, he likes someone else, yadda yadda yadda, someone gets killed because of it). Definitely not scary or gory, so people who usually avoid horror graphic novels might want to give this one a try. Some of the illustrations are amazingly well-done. Even though this is the only book I own in this series (so far), I can't wait to start Ya-Seong Ko's other series I have: Under the Glass Moon.

145) Crawl Space: Volume 1: XXXombies by Rick Remender, et al.
Read: Dec. 7 - 7
My Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: Eisner nominated artists Kieron Dwyer (Remains) and Tony Moore (The Walking Dead, Fear Agent) return to zombie comics with fan favorite writer Rick Remender (Fear Agent, Punisher War Journals) to bring you the last word in zombiesploitation. It's 1977, and a sleazy producer has gathered a bevy of adult film stars for a week long shoot. When they emerge, they discover a zombie plague has overrun a now-quarantined Los Angeles. Will any of the entourage survive these Boogie Nights of the Living Dead?
My Tags: fiction, horror, graphic novel, zombies, los angeles, california
My Notes: Gross, fun story (gets a 5 for that); illustrations: "meh" (hence the 4). And yes, "Boogie Nights of the Living Dead" is an apt description of it--it's all porn stars and zombies . . . and sometimes zombie porn stars. Only for the zombie/graphic novel/horror crowd; all others run far, far away. There's some humor mixed it, but mostly it's just killing, killing, nudity, and . . . uh, killing (surprised? ;).

Read: Dec. 8 - 11
My Rating: 5/5
Synopsis: Jamie is crushing on Hudson. Someone too-gross-to-be- named is crushing on Jamie. And Hudson is crushing on . . . Princess Turd of Turdsylvania (a.k.a. The Prettiest Girl in the World). Middle school may be grim, but it's no fairy tale. And crazy doesn't even begin to cover it. "Dear Dumb Diary, I got another poem today from You-Know-Who! 'She is the fairest blossom, true, / She blooms in any weather. / But I must love her from afar. / We'll never be together.' Signed, M.P. Can you believe the pain he's in? His suffering? DVD 14) Splinter directed by Toby Wilkins
My Rating: 5/5
Synopsis: A young couple retreats to the wildnerness for a romantic camping weekend, but the trip quickly spirals into a nightmare when they are carjacked by an escaped convict and his girlfriend. Thrown together by chance, no one can imagine the terrifying horror that awaits the two couples at a remote and isolated gas station.
My Tags: horror, thriller, drama, oklahoma, monsters, R, dvd
My Notes: Good acting, fast paced (82 minutes), and some brief special features that shed a little light on what the splinter creature is (though I'm still not exactly sure what it is--a parasite of some sort?). My biggest complaint, though, is why are there no English subtitles?? :/
