Well (4), Good beach book (2), wow (1), so opposite from me in ..... let's see... everything!!!! - it made me reject the book altogether and I was going to give it a review of 1/2 star. But (1), I picked it up and read more carefully - I have no empathy for this person since he is so different from me and the stuff he has done. Rough childhood (1), etc. for sure. Bad drug addict (1), survived somehow after stealing/cheating for decades and then (1), ......... buys a house in Benedict Canyon (1), has millions (1), hosts a radio show (1), takes up meditation (1), etc. etc. so so wierd for sex pistol to end up in Bel Air. In the end he did become (1), a better person (1), so maybe there is something for that...... (1), I wanted to like this book - it is like many others I have read. But the book describes a young man's death from heatstroke and that disturbed me so much. Also the author did an incredible feat but I would have liked to have heard more about how he financ (1), but this was not the novel for me. Science fiction should make one feel in awe of the universe and our place in it - this did neither. I only finished it out of obligation. Compare to Juanita Coulson's books or Stephen Baxter's heroines - e.g. Paula tryin (1), etc........ (1), I did not like this book - I could not relate to the woman who seemed spoiled - could actually sit in an apartment without having to worry about money (1), and I read the entire thing. She is American and went to Egypt in 1998 or so. 38 years old and on her own in the smallest outpost villages along the Nile. Bought a small boat. Very very interesting and well written. (1), I thought the Dry was a masterpiece (1), but did not think this book was at the same level - very well written and I will continue to follow the author (1), but did not engage me as much....... (1), The back cover explained an interesting plot - doctors at the CDC are kidnapped (1), but it was all boringly focused on dialog and I quickly lost interest. Just not my style (1), This book was high profile in 2020 and I was expecting a little more. Right now I can barely remember it (1), so it was not the big literary read for me that I was hoping for (1), The latest book about my favorite spy. On holiday in Venice and lots about the Catholic Church. The book was oddly preachy at time - seemed to have stuffed pandemic warning into it just before press. Also seemed to bring up Trump. Was ever so slightly dis (1), Another insecure famous rock musician - book is made up of interviews. As with all of them (1), not too interesting...... (1), And there I was age 14 and reading a copy of Rolling Stone was the highlight of my life. And (1), here he is - the editor who became a jerk 1% just like all the rest of them. Ughhhhhhhhhh (1), The first third of this book was interesting - husband in Egypt came down with awful wierd disease. I can't even fathom how much it cost in medical treatments to keep him alive and find the phague cure - all I could think about was how this is not only th (1), What a strange book and strange person. So I picked up the book in Chapters discount and then skim-read it one night. I was appalled - the author is so (1), women becoming a larger part of a more diverse space program (1), Out of idleness I picked up my iphone and checked the books app which I had never looked at. This book came up (1), this was fantastic!!! - what a story and so interesting. Plane crashes in New Guinea during WWII - lots of great research and really interesting insight into the local population. Very interesting in regards to first contact scenarios. What I really liked (1), not very good. About first satellite launch in U.S. and spies. Very odd (1), Do not understand the controversy - from what I"ve seen and heard all of this book is true. I like her writing - clear and direct. (1), Pandemic read - ordered and read in the summer. What an odd book. He is a good enough writer (1), but I wouldn't want to be his mother or sister or any other relative. I felt like he was betraying family confidences... and for what? There is no lesson here (1), just bad luck (1), especially for the dad. That was the most depressing scene - the dad is dying (1), but his daughter or son or ex-wife don't want to bother taking care of him. (1), Ahhhhhhhhhhh - nothing better than the Scott Horvaths (1), Mitch Rapps (1), and Jack Bauers of this world..........Formulaistic (1), wooden dialog (1), but I loved it all the same just for thinking there is someone out there taking care of the bad guys........And to top it off I watched American Assassin right afterwards and stayed up late! Gabriel Allon the best but I love them all. Wonderful few days r (1), As always a really good read (1), but the main character is almost too perfect - I liked the Rooster Bar guys better.... but always readable and fun........plus always learn things. Most haunting book is stll The Confession.... (1), This book requires great thought (1), Was super interesting because of the Canadian connection - VIA rail plot. But not anything like The Looming Tower. (1), as a young man's recent death is the main story. The story is compelling (1), interesting and I learned things. The first third of the book is concise and kept my interest. But....... at a certain point (1), there were two things that bothered me and I have one observation on the writing. The writing become somewhat disjointed for the last half of the book - introducing too many new characters and events. Then (1), and how can one judge - but the book brings up the theory that the young man who disappeared from a cycling trip in a remote Washington State Park had unaddressed mental illnesses (1), in fact schizophrenia was named. Yet (1), there was no diagnosis and no implicit evidence that this played a role in the disappearance. I felt like this was an invasion of privacy to publish a book with this speculation in it - he is not around to give permission and I felt it was intrusive. Not (1), but the author did not produce a masterpiece (ie Columbine (1), etc.). I wasn't going to give it this many stars (1), but then I did learn something ................no (1), I"m gong to take half star away........ (1), This was a ridiculous book and I can't believe it won a Hugo Award. It reads like a juvenile (1), obnoxious person's story and not only did I think that the writing was terrible (1), I hated the character. The story I liked - alternate history (1), meteor hitting the earth (1), Riveting book - not very literary but could not put it down - good thriller. Will look for other books by the author (1), but it seemed to get bogged down in details. I loved the theme - about how crooked private nursing homes can be (1), This started out to be readable (1), What an odd book. Starts out ok but then degenerates. Oamoahuma type object in solar system in 2057. The characters are not very fleshed out and are stereotypical - military guy (1), very military focused but somehow it kept me enthralled for an entire week - a wonderful thick space opera that I could not put down. It took him a long time to write the book (1), but it was worth it. Same category as Kevin Anderson (1), Peter Hamilton - space opera on a grand scale. (1), I happen to know a little bit about Mt. Everest and the lead character in this book is as clueless as some of the novice climbers one reads about that are guided up the mountain. Non likeable character and stereotypical dialog - at least it was readable b (1), especially when it came to women. I'm going to re-read it and then donate to the Cross. I"d really like to read his the Boy in the Moon. I admire Ian and his wife who is also a writer for the Globe and Mail. Note: I just re-read this book and appreciated (1), but with a humility due to his son and financial circumstances. (1), Great book - very good writer (1), Depressing story but well written (1), Not that great (1), Unbelievable novel - large (1), large scale first contact. (1), I like this book and author. Want to read subsequent books (1), I loved this book - fantastic thriller and her other book the lies I tell was really good as well (1), etc. Most irritating is how the others start referring to the main character astronaut as an old woman even though she is just 54. It was mainly a horror book. and the usual trope of becoming one with the alien spacecraft. (1), but I didn't find it interesting. It is about his family living in Tibet for year. Maybe I just don't find buddhists very interesting....... (1), This book was a terrific thriller - 600 inmates are released - great beach book! I would read more books by this author for sure. (1), This was a kind of creepy book - readable and well written but somewhat unsettling. good beach book (1), I did not finish this book - found it kind of creepy how the detective starts going out with young woman witness etc. The writing was good (1), but I did not like the character (1), I did not like this book - thought I would. About a scientist trying to grow algae in space to save the world...... (1), Transformative book absolutely fascinating and I learned so much. (1), This book was good - very sad about the son being the murder suspect of two girls in Thailand. A good beach book. Would read more by this author. (1), where do I start. On one hand I loved how the billionaires were portrayed as evil (1), etc. On the other hand the locals in northern Alberta were portrayed as taking over the land. Very very odd book with plot and premise that was interesting and I can remember. Depressing in that much of it is the world the way it is... or might be in 2049 (1), I liked this book - not a great literary book (1), but I would read more by the author for sure. Another police detective book. (1), This was a very very readable light book - wonderful descriptions of the scenery. Not very literary... perfect beach read. (1), A ridiculous book about a solar flare disrupting all global electromagnetic communication for a year. Christian based prepper family values gag me book with store owner and of course reclusive army guy on mountain. Oddly readable though. Very much like Su (1), would download as a sale item to read on plane. (1), wow.........a little corny (1), I think. So I thought this book would be good (1), An utter masterpiece (1), This was a riveting in tense read (1), but all the main characters were wealthy. I liked the Rooster Bar much better. (1), This was a great beach book - good mystery. (1), Good for the author to write a book about his sister. Very eye opening (1), although not surprising the Quebec small town police corruption and lack of effort to solve the case. Very well done. (1), This book covers his time up to the filming of the Last Waltz. It is written better and more interesting than several other musician memoirs but I still have to think that making that much money so early on spoils people. He was like the Forest Gump of gu (1), Malibu Colony. Barely a mention about wealth. I never know what to think of these memoirs - and I am not that familiar with the band aside from their main songs. Unique background - First Nation mother and Jewish father. I can't help thinking that if he w (1), A masterpiece - liked the fact that the main character was a flawed human being. (1), This book was soooo bad. Yet the author wrote one of my top ten trilogies of all time - an all-out indictment of the deep south. So he has one main problem when writing - he has a 15 year old attitude about sex. The trilogy did not have much in it (1), but his next book had a horrible childish scene. And this book was godawful. (1), Ahhhh (1), remembering University where I lived for the next Robert Ludlum novel. The Holcroft Covenant was my favorite. About one third of the way through I almost gave up on this one - same plot (1), same attractive woman (1), it was fun to read and I liked it. (1), a beach book but not a beach book. About long ago rape of young girl (1), He wrote one of the funniest articles I have ever read - about getting a massage in India (1), Cape Code type now all grown up and tracks down the guy...... (1), Very readable book about conflicted cop in New York. Skims yet cares about the people. Very good (1), I would read more. (1), Cannot put this down. Intense family drama. But... once again..... all well off (1), spoiled..... but what a great book. (1), This was an odd book. I have been so disillusioned over the past five years or so by rock star memoirs. They get too rich too young and then are spoiled. She is different - rich family (1), but an odd lack of awareness about it or its impact. Also (1), nothing against her (1), but I just could not relate to her wierd family growing up given the wonderful upbringing I had. But she is a very good writer (1), but somewhat flighty...... (1), It doesn't get better than this - space and geology - a surprisingly good thriller set in the age of the Apollo mission. Not the most literary writing (1), but a fantastic beach thriller and I learned some things about the space program. (1), This was kind of a strange book. I love his writing and articles in the Globe and Mail. But his experience turning sixty was different from mine (1), and also he seemed juvenile at tiimes (1), Wierd book (1), I found this book boring and too long. (1), I liked this book. Great beach book - good author and I should collect these and read in order. (1), better than I thought it would be. spiders erupting (1), Nice plot but not great character development might read the next one Special Forces soldier in a bunker and ordered to keep order after the apocalypse (1), The book felt rushed and formulatic - not like some of the other good ones by the author (1), About a movie star who moves to Oregon - gets stalked. I didn't think I would like it but I did - nothing deep (1), but easy read and hard to put down. (1), This was an amazing book - really really made me think about the difficulty of travelling to the stars - not perfect book but very interesting concepts and plot unexpected....... (1), Was blown away by this book - Balkans (1), the writing was superb -huge surprise (1), new author I have to read the rest of his books (1), First Contact Book - artifact in Saturn's rings. US and China race to it - wish it was a little bit better (1), but still great to read a first contact book (1), Wierd book lawyer abandoned in Alaska (1), Didn't expect anything (1), very good beach book (1), Book didn't really keep my interest - might try again.....I should watch the movie (1), Boring naval book ridiculous plot tsumani (1), Hard to keep itnerest (1), Gothic murder mystery - could not hold my interest (1), not great - keep and re read and also good Israel references. (1), Have tried twice (1), yet Freedom and the Corrections were incredible. Will keep and try again..... (1), Excellent read - picked up (1), not too memorable. virus story (1), Started out promising and there are sentences and passages that take my breath away. But.... became disjointed and wierd (1), could not follow what was going on and who was who. (1), Awesome book Origin story Mitch Rapp. Loved it (1), Glad she wrote this book but couldn't really get into it.... (1), Could not get into this one.... usually am riveted but not this one. (1), I don't know what to rate this. The couples drama in this was boring for me (1), but the book got better as it went along. In the end I liked it and was vested in the characters (1), sexua assult very technical (1), better than Gray Mountain (1), Wonderfully written and could not put down. (1), so (1), Cairo (1), nuclear weapons (1), very readable (1), others (1), cheesy (1), Once again (1), then (1), Very (1), Woodstock (1), astronaut (1), CIA (1), Did not like this book (1), nerve gas (1), Very good (1), Fantastic beach book (1), Dylan (1), Wow (1), Good book (1), entitled (1), Not great (1), A masterpiece (1), in his own words (1), amazingly (1), but not great. (1), the worst (1), could not put down. (1), and yet (1), Gray site in Beirut (1), Will Cochrane. Spycatcher series - really liked it. (1), but not completely. What do they do about money? Everyone is rich....... (1), Reading together with A House in the Sky. This woman and her family are incredible and (1), jobs (1), Did not like this book - way too dry. Same with The Martian. (1), This was one of the better books of the zombie genre. Is set in the early days and although not as detailed as I would like is better than most of them. Would like to read the sequel. (1), This was a great book - really highlighted the Victorian era and the amazing life back then. Downton Abbey was involved in King Tuts Tomb. (1), Sounded like a good beach book (1), attacks in Texas and Los Angeles but characters and plot very staid and not interesting. Could not hold my interest after the first few chapters (1), very good book - couldn't put it down. Small town in Australia - drought. (1), readable book - would be great beach book. Detective. Will look for more by this author (1), Could not get into this book. I should try again sometime........ (1), Fantastic book - lots of indepth interview information about Apollo astronauts (1), I liked the first half of this book (1), but not the second - the main character is too perfect (1), Tried twice to get through and just can't get into it (1), Could not get past first page (1), Interesting concept for science fiction - different evolution and interesting assumptions but could not get into the book. (1), A glorious beach book. Could not put it down. Recent law school grad takes on the bad guys. (1), professor. How about a normal person for once. (1), Not a great book at all. Ex CIA Deputy Director memoir. Does not go into detail and mostly deals with Benghazi. Interesting photos in the book (1), EPL Book - buy for Danelle. This book is brilliant and the only downside is that it is too short. Examines people (1), especially seniors (1), forced to live in campers and vans while continuing to work. Old age security in the States is only $500 or so a month for many. Was interesting since the author described actual budget figures. She also lived in a van and worked gathering material for th (1), nothing great. About President's son and evil medical community. Give to dad. (1), This was a really good book - about a defector. Am rating this 8 out of ten and keeping an eye out for other books by the same author. Give to dad. (1), Could not get into this book...... give to dad (1), Book was OK. Beach read. Might be worth starting series with book one. (1), Beach book. Don't really like the memory aspect. (1), Another riveting masterpiece. Beautiful book - could not put it down. And yet (1), it would have rated a bit higher except for the sex scenes - especially the scene where he is hiding at the house and she walks across the field dropping her clothes off until she is naked. First of all (1), he is in hiding and no one in their right mind would do that - it wasn't like it was their first time together so this one scene took the level of the book down a notch for me. (1), This book sat on my shelf for a long time and then I started to read it. It got better and better until it drew me right in and I was fascinated. Loved the story about the Rocky Mountains and the civil servant in Ottawa. Was slightly disappointed that she (1), This was a huge disapointment. The Looming Tower is one of the best books I have ever read. This came off as boring and self indulgent. I like reading history but this did not really get to me at all. (1), Great beach book! - Not the absolute greatest but mainly kept up interest (1), etc. but with a main character other than hugely successful professional - ie lawyer (1), together with the other family work together under the very worst of circumstances. Am so so so glad that she wrote this. (1), signed this out of the RASC library. Far too detailed to read and enjoy but learned alot about how court and politics worked at the time and was amazed at the big science centre set up by Tycho. (1), What an odd book. In some places so very well written but the story was a jumbled up mess and difficult to read. I bought this book after reading all the great reviews (1), but found it obviously written by a male author and so very very wierd. I just skimmed it after a while and won't even try again. When I compare to We are Not Ourselves or other American themed novels .. well.. I just can't read this style...am annoyed si (1), Big book but not really what I was interested in. Oddly written. (1), Incredible book - the only reason not perfect is because I'm not into horse racing (1), but what a story and so (1), so well researched. Brilliant (1), Thriller but could not keep my interest. (1), he is formulatic (always an attractive companion of sorts) and not the greatest writing (1), but could not put it down!!! Where are we from. Where are we going? lots of interesting facts (1), Tried and couldn't get past the first twenty pages. Not my thing (1), This book was so unusual - I was not going to rate it as 8 or above (1), but then after I finished the book I kept thinking about it for days and days. Driving down the Pan-American in a camper has been done (1), but she had done it as a young girl in a strange family. I would call this book haunting. (1), Unbelievable. I thought I was well read about the opioid crisis but I had no idea that this happened in Florida. Cannot believe what people will do. Couldn't put it down. (1), very serious topics - Huntingtons. Odd plot structure with online discussion group linking the two main themes in the book. Why can't someone write a Still Alice (1), I should love this book (1), especially after seeing The Post (1), but I could not relate to someone born into money. I just couldn't relate to her (1), despite all her achievements... (1), I don't know what to do. One of my top ten authors and one of my favorite universes and I could not (1), just could not (1), get into this. I hope the sequel is better. Don't know why (1), just did not engage me. Am torn since I have to give it a below 8 rating. (1), What an unusual book!!! A post apocalyptic novel - a flu pandemic has killed most of the population. The book is set (1), in all places (1), in northern Manitoba north of Thompson. I liked the characters alot but not the plot - lame young girl (1), evil man plot. Liked the girl and the Cree young man and very realistic book about trying to survive in extreme winter conditions. (1), what an odd book. Very (1), but the characters are not very likeable. Very (1), A masterpiece in not only the Anne Frank story but also the Holocaust experience in Europe. Describes in detail why the second world war effort against Hitler was necessary. I learned alot and did not realize she was in the last transport to Westerbork an (1)
