About My Library
Way too big. I collect horror short stories, but I try not to collect novels because my library is way too big. I have a lot of craft/art books, and my sister says I'm not going to live long enough to make all the recipes in my hundreds of cookbooks. I'm fortunate to have a den with enough shelves (made by my father out of boards from his barn) to hold most of my books.
About my collection titled "They Tried and Died" - It is a quote from Dune. The Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam is telling the young Paul Atreides what happened to all men who have attempted the spice trance. This is how I refer to very bad books that were not worth reading or finishing.
About my collection "Antique and Vintage Cookbooks" - I arbitrarily chose 1970 as the cut-off publication date for these. Dates after 1970 refer to the publication of the edition, not the original recipes. Also, sometimes the dates refer to the original recipes and not the publication date of the edition I own - I really don't have many books from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries shelved in my collection, but I have plenty of ebook editions of these and some facsimile editions. My intention is to do something really interesting with these recipes someday, maybe a blog. I don't care one bit about owning a valuable antique book because I collect books to read and use them, not to build a valuable collection worth big dollars.
About my collection "ebooks" - ebooks cannot begin to compete with the pleasure of holding a beautifully bound and printed volume in one's hands - just ask anyone who has ever held an Easton Press edition. Even so, ebooks have their place in a reader's library. The advantage of a zero-foot print for an extensive reading and reference library is attractive. In addition to this, ebooks have made available to me many genre antique books and magazines (old editions of Weird Tales, anyone?) that I would never have been able to touch let alone read, because they are expensive collector's items now. The fiction of previous decades and even centuries is still well worth the read, and much has now been made available, often at no cost at all, to anyone willing to make the effort to look for these gems of the past.
About Me
Lives in the country, works in the city and also telecommutes, reads all over the place, loves audio books (refuses to do housework unless I have something to listen to), loves cats, emeralds, olives and rubies. And Halloween. My library card gets far more use than my credit card.
