About My Library

"Some men are like musical glasses;
to produce their finest tones
you must keep them wet."
—Samuel Taylor Coleridge

We are a books-and-beer club in New England. We have been meeting since January 2008. The Coleridge quote above has been inspiring, and we liked B.C. Musical Glass because it sounds like a European football club. The club has no discernible rules, and books are chosen by consensus. A typical discussion among the members of B.C. Musical Glass ranges from books and beer to music, movies, science, religion, Plato, recipes, our children, technology and frisbees. Sometimes a poem pops out. We enjoyed "Ichabod" from Robert Hershon’s collection How to Ride on the Woodlawn Express:

Everyone's first name means
Beloved of the Lord
or Bearer of Glad Tidings
or Valiant in Battle

except Ichabod
which means The Glory
has Departed

and must be considered
the name for the future
along with The Liar is Thriving
Unbearable Cruelty and
The Shitheads are Running the Show

Also,
“God was at last to believe in man: good and strong,
but good and strong are still two different people.”
—Wisława Szymborska, “The Turn of the Century”

and something about remembering persimmons.
