- About Me
- I was born in Bertie County, NC, graduated from the College of New Jersey then practiced law in Halifax, NC. I was elected to the North Carolina House of Commons, then was chosen to be a judge on the North Carolina Supreme Court before being elected to the sixth Congress of the United States. I was elected to the United States Senate, but resigned to go back to the North Carolina Supreme Court. I was there for one year before the legislature elected me to the first of two one-year terms as Governor. In 1810 I returned to the House of Commons and was then sent to the United States Senate in 1813. The North Carolina House censured me for not supporting the Jefferson administration in the War of 1812. I resigned resigned the seat in 1814 and retired to my Wake County plantation and died in 1818.
