Belle Gunness was in for a hard life from the start. Born the first of many children to an impoverished family in rural Norway, her days were filled with abuse, grueling labor, and little hope for anything else. Then her husband, Mads, dies a sudden and mysterious death, leaving her with a generous life insurance policy. When Belle remarries, everyone sees it as a testament to her endurance. But then her next husband dies, as do a countless number of suitors who follow.
