This is a power-packed book. Rebecca is a pistol. She starts with little confidence to slowly grow into a mature momma who can stand her ground. She is left behind when her husband returns to England for his sick father. Now this is in the early times, not common for that time. She stays to take care of her ill mom. The Latvian government lies to keep her prisoner and tells her husband she is dead. No communication reaches either. Eventually, she escapes with her house serf, her serf's free brother, her son (yes, she was pregnant) and gets to England. She meets up with her husband and it's not what she expected. So many changes and surprise, including the criminal Gorgi from Latvia following, and these two somehow will fight, challenge and overcome everything thrown at them. This is a book full of welll-written… (lisätietoja)

Miss Elizabeth Campbell (nee Clarke), the new schoolteacher, returns to Bittersweep to find out why her home was the only one burned down so many years ago during a yellow fever outbreak. She meets handsome chairman of the school JP Honeycutt. Though not looking for a romance, she is pulled to him by something...JP remembers a five year old little girl that he lifted onto a wagon when he was 12. Why does Elizabeth look so familiar? Elizabeth finds herself being warned off JP by Mrs. Ledbetter at the boarding house. She's told that he isn't interested in her type. Well, she doesn't have time for that. Along with trying to find out answers to her questions, she is helping to rescue an orphan girl. She finds herself right in the middle of a murder mystery. A very entertaining book. The owl-hoot robbers (I love this) are such a hoot. The characters just pop right up in your mind. Aunt Maude's scowling face is easy to picture. The town sounds like every small town, full of gossip and drama. Nice, clean, and easy to read. I highly recommend this book and this author.… (lisätietoja)

Elizabeth returns to the small township of Bittersweep, Texas, after leaving with her family fifteen years prior. She has some memories of her family’s forced departure from Bittersweep, and even at the young age of five, she keenly remembers that her mother was not with them when they left, but she wonders why. Elizabeth is haunted and determined to discover the reason why they were forced to leave and why her mother didn’t leave Bittersweep with them.

In the small town of Bittersweep, Elizabeth takes on the position of the local teacher under the assumed name of Campbell. She is also on a mission to find her mother’s treasured box. Elizabeth has a lot going on, including protecting her heart from the good-looking and striking chairman of the school board. Then she is falsely accused of murder. There are many questions and mysteries to be solved, like who was involved in the bank robbery, for one?

Wareeze Woodson has woven a wonderful historical fiction novel filled with intrigue and drama. The story and plot is full and complete, lacking nothing. There are twists and turns around every corner and plenty of mystery to keep this reader fully engaged from start to finish. There are a lot of well written, unexpected surprises in this engrossing story.

The excellent descriptive writing had me visualizing the settings, smells and people while putting me right on the scene set back in Texas in 1897. The author has a way with words that draws the reader in and holds their attention from the very first chapter.

Bittersweep is a captivating book with a great storyline that is rich and meaningful. The fully developed characters are realistic and relatable and I loved the personalities of Elizabeth and JP.

Readers will be intrigued by the various mysteries that are the focus of this book. It had me guessing and trying to figure out the many secrets, puzzling circumstances and affairs. Woodson has developed several plot points that come together in a significant, exciting culmination and finale.

Wareeze Woodson has done a superb job in writing Bittersweep. She is an excellent writer and is noted as so. Thus, Bittersweep is one of the best historical fictions that I have read in a long time and I plan to read it again.

Before She Became A Lady is a suspenseful mystery romance. I absolutely loved laurel, the main character! At the start of the story, she is the poster child for innocence, followed by light rebellion. She's just a girl when she falls in love and chooses to marry, but throughout the coarse of the book you get to see her evolve into a real woman.
I thought reading this text was much like watching a butterfly break from it's cocoon - artful, pleasant, and suspenseful.
When her husband has to up and leave for war, Laurel is left alone to face the terrors that flood the night. Alone and in charge, Laurel has no choice but to step up to the plate and solve these break in mysteries.
The romance and suspense were spot on perfection! I'm not just saying that. I mean I honest to god felt like I was Laurel on multiple occasions and it scared the hell out of me!! (Not the love making! That part was very romantic and not at all scary, I promise. This isn't Mr. Penn.)
I loved the historical time period, as well. It's no secret I'm obsessed with historical fiction and the mannerisms and setting in this book specifically did NOT disappoint! In fact, this is one of the best historical romances I have ever read! It's truly capturing, breathtaking, and a lot of other -ings! I recommend this book for those who enjoy a little mystery added to their historical romance.
