I am the author of middle grade novels, like Malcolm at Midnight, nonfiction picture books, like Glow: Animals with Their Own Night-Lights, regional biographies, like Dr. Kate: Angel on Snowshoes, and educational series, like Follow That Food Chain. My books have been honored by Junior Library Guild selection, state and regional awards, the National Science Teachers Association, and Bank Street Best Books of the Year, among others. Even though I write across several genres, I like to think that all my books feature a dose of wonder, a pinch of humor, and are steeped in kindness towards others, including all critters on our planet.

When I'm not writing, I teach as a high school “media and technology integration specialist” (i.e., a librarian) in Wisconsin. And in between all that, I love to read, make art, travel, and explore the outdoors with my husband, sons, and dogs.

The cover of Glow: Animals with their Own Night-Lights by W.H. Beck will make you stop and take notice. Just look at that angler fish!

Once you dive into this book, the pictures help teach readers about the different kinds of animals and plants that use bio-luminescence. After you learn the definition, you'll be introduced to animals deep in the sea (thank goodness they are so far down I will never encounter them), in the woods, and even in the air. I had no idea that fireflies aren’t actually flies! I definitely learned a lot. I'd love to go where there are dinoflagellates making the water sparkle.

If you're looking for an interesting way to learn about plants and animals, than I highly recommend this non-fiction picture book. It's great for young kids or older readers.

This is the second book in the series Malcolm at Midnight. I did not read the first book and I think it would have been better if I did. There were many references to occurrences from the first book. That being said, I was still able to follow the story.

Malcolm is a classroom rat living at McKenna School. The animals that live at McKenna all travel around the school at night and are part of the Midnight Academy. In this story, they have found out that the school may be closed and they are worried that their Nutters (children) and Lankies (adults) will all be sent to different schools and they will not be together. They set out to find a hidden stash that has been referred to in stories. The premise is good, but I found the story long and drawn out and it took a long time to read as I kept setting it aside. The story is geared to middle school students and the idea of animals solving the mystery of the hidden stash will be interesting but I am not sure if they will stick to the book. Lots of facts about animals are given in footnotes which is also a good idea. I did love the illustrations in this book and hope that the next one in the series is a little more concise.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

A fabulous book that explores animals with bioluminescence--the ability to glow. The dual text with shorter readings at the top and more explanatory text at the bottom, makes this a great book for readers of all ages. A book that astounds readers!

This is a fabulous read aloud book for all ages. The text is all about organisms that use bioluminescence. The photos and captions are superb. The pages of the text are black so that the bioluminescent organisms really come to life on the page. The text is white and in bold print so that it jumps off the page for the reader. The text flows well from page to page and organism to organism. On each page there is additional finer print text also in white which explains why or how the organism uses bioluminescence. There are no page numbers and no table of contents. The title page uses font that glows for the title word "glow". The author includes a bibliography of reliable resources. At the end of the text, a page includes small photos of each organism, lists the organisms scientific name and other information. This is a really beautiful and useful book for teaching about bioluminescence or adaptations of organisms.… (lisätietoja)
