This is my review of A Wish Made of Glass

A Wish Made of Glass is a beautifully told story of a young girl coming of age by Christian Fantasy writer Ashlee Willis

A Wish Made of Glass draws you into the fairy-tale like atmosphere and the magic of the fey folk as they danced with young Isidore. This story surrounds you in her world as we follow Isidore as she is learning to deal with loss and change. Just as she dances with the fey of her childhood in a place somewhere between this world and theirs, they keep watch and try to guide her throughout her life.

She is not the dainty damsel in distress but a normal and quite flawed human girl.
The introduction of her step sister Blessing (a true fairytale beauty) and her step mother give us a true glimpse of young Isidore's personality.

Throughout the story, Isidore is burdened by the choice of right and wrong and the consequences of such choices. She is brooding, contemptuous, acting out in jealousy and at times selfishly casting away the beautiful light that could be her life for shadows instead.

The storytelling is unexpectedly poignant and beautiful. It will stay with you long after you have finished the last word.

I give this novella 5 stars

There is a twist to “The Word Changers” that I did not see coming.

The blurb does not make it clear that the King is also the director/dictator of “the plot”. That’s quite a twist!

And it’s the only spoiler you’ll get out of me…

I don’t believe I’ve ever read this type of idea in a story. They say there are no new ideas – but with this story… I don’t know, it sounds original to me!

What reader doesn’t dream about getting sucked into their favorite book!

Now, when I say I’ve never read about this specific idea – I should mention that I have read/watched other books/movies about getting sucked into a book.

However, in those stories, the characters had no idea they were inside the covers of a book. They just participated in the story as it was written.

This story is very different. The characters in this book are very much aware of the fact that they are in a book. They all act and react according to “the plot”. And that is what makes the book unique.

So I suppose the above statement is at least half true… the story is a new twist on an old idea.

Ashlee does a wonderful job with her descriptions. The settings come alive, the story line is exceptionally vivid – holding your attention to the very end, and her characters are believable, growing with the story – as characters should.

I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.

The Word Changers by Ashlee Willis is a fun fantasy book that kids will love. If you are a fan of Narnia you will, I am sure, like this book also. As a Grandmother I am always looking for good books that the kids and I will enjoy and this book does not disappoint. I would highly recommend this book and admit I enjoyed reading it too.

Posey finds escape from her troubled family by going to the library and reading books. When she wakes up inside a book in place of the Princess she finds that things could be worse than what she came from. She must find a way to get back to her world and find the Princess she replaced and all before something bad happens to her.

If your kids or you like a good fantasy, are a big bookworm and want a good message then you must read this book. There is a message of forgiveness, moving beyond our hurt to learning to love.
This is such an enjoyable book. You have a strong willed, courageous girl as the main character and you can relate to her easily. If you are looking for a book that is interesting, exciting and wholesome that throws in good fantasy then you must read this book. I give 5 Stars.

Conquest Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of the book through BookCrash. In exchange for my honest review

Can a story be changed by its characters? Or does the author have the final say in how a story ends? These are some of the questions that Ashlee Willis poses in her debut YA fantasy/allegory, The Word Changers. An interesting concept wrapped in a fairytale setting, this novel should appeal especially to middle school and younger high school aged kids.

Posy is facing problems at home. Her parents are constantly fighting, and Posy and her younger sister are enduring the consequences. In an attempt to escape the turmoil at home, Posy flees to the library and the security found in a book. But Posy has no idea just what she’ll encounter within its pages. Finding herself literally in the midst of a story gone awry — missing and mutinous characters — Posy joins the Prince on a quest to restore order.

The Word Changers is filled with mythical beasts, talking owls, and characters determined to assert their own will on the Author’s Plot. There is a little bit of something for everyone — magic, battles, adventure and a little romance. It is also an allegorical look at life. Posy finds an Author that has not written a story and then left it alone, but an Author who loves his characters enough to let them make choices and impact the story. Posy also learns the power of love and mercy and how to apply it to her real world life. While the story bogged down a bit at the end and I would have liked a bit more emphasis on Posy’s real world, The Word Changers is, overall, a good debut. Public school teachers: God is never mentioned by name in this book. An Author is, however. This one might be suitable for your classroom bookcase.

The Word Changers provides a lot to think about and is a good bet for your children ages 12 and up.

Recommended.

Audience: Ages 12+

Good for family reading.
