Suffer me that I may speak, and after that I have spoken, mock on: but I really think that they should have taught us this in school, a little arithmetic, a little numerology—instead of Only! teaching us the things that machines can do better, you know…. The Pythagoreans and the Greeks and so on weren’t always positive people, of course: they didn’t always see the value, even, in being inclusive: but sometimes one wonders what direction we’re going on (at least all the way out until 1955 (or maybe more generally the Oppenheimer years, not that those have ended, not that “Barbie” was Greta’s best movie, right), since now we groom people to become machines—or cast them aside. I don’t know: I think people still have a lot to learn, and seeing meaning not just in words, but in numbers, is something most people never even begin, for one reason or another. Generally we divide people, don’t we, into those who don’t like numbers and those who don’t like meaning. But division is alienating.

…. Every age has its own lore, and the old fancy-occultism can be stiff and un-woke, of course, but I think it’s a perfectly good investment of time (and ninety-nine cents). Every age has its own lore, but it’s always built up upon the lore of previous ages, in one way or another.

…. For, say, a Wiccan person, there’d be a lot of Christian/biblical numbers, but it is rather balanced for an Edwardian book, or even for the majority of people today. I guess the main sign of the age of the book is its formality, although the difference today is often just one of a degree or two; many dragons huff and puff today, that we are not as stiff as we used to be.
