This slim booklet contains three linked essays following trends in European decorative art from the Renaissance to the Rococo. The first two pieces outline the development of the grotesque and arabesque styles respectively, with the latter piece also explaining how these two threads often came to be woven together into a single ornametal fabric. The third essay looks at the idea of the grotto, at rocaille decoration, and the development & deployment of the cartouche.
