Jack Thorne (1) (1863–1941)

This very thin book (44 pages) puts a human face on the nightmares documented in books such as "Slavery by Another Name" and "Railroads in the African-American Experience". Fulton hired on as a Pullman porter in New York in the 1880's. In this book he describes highlights of his travels to all parts of the U.S. as an employee of the Pullman company. Most of the book is devoted to descriptions of his interactions with passengers and the various ways they treated and mistreated him. While there were many passengers who did treat him with respect it is his very matter-of-fact description of his treatment by other passengers, particularly (but not exclusively) those traveling below the Mason-Dixon line that makes this a very hard 44 page read.… (lisätietoja)
