Interesting new series from Thorenson. Not as compelling as his other series but has possibilities.

An eclectic group of American specialists, military and not, are deposited in bleak and barren Northern Canada. They are part of an elaborate and deceptive plan to examine the "Object", a likely extraterrestrial artifact deposited there centuries ago. Communications are established and Earth's place in the universe is changed forever. Clearly, the Object is related to others found in Thorenson's Destiny's Crucible series. Time for payback for the assassination attempt on the Paramount leader. Josef organizes and Mark produces such that a well-armed invasion fleet is off to the Iraquinik Confederation. Serious battles with a positive outcome set the stage for another foundling surprise, perhaps even an economist.
Joe gets his wish and an engineer Mark Caldwell joins him on Caedellium with Heather another foundling, a musician. Their work in transforming their immediate world is almost brought to a halt by an assassination attempt on Josef, the Paramount leader.
