Ruth Thomas was born in Wellington, Somerset, England on January 4, 1927. She received degrees in English and education from Bristol University. She worked as a teacher until she accepted early retirement and started writing. Her first book, The Runaways, was published in 1987 and won the 1988 näytä lisää Guardian Children's Fiction Prize. - Ruth Thomas is the author of three short story collections and two novels, as well as many short stories which have been anthologised and broadcast on the BBC. The Snow and the Works on the Northern Line is her third novel. Her writing has won and been shortlisted for various prizes, including the John Llewellyn Rhys Award, the Saltire First Book Award and the VS Pritchett Prize, and long-listed for the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award. She lives in Edinburgh and is currently an Advisory Fellow for the Royal Literary Fund.

This is the story of two school friends, Rowena Cresswell and Sally Tuttle, who now have different lives. Both have children, one had to leave school because of her pregnancy. When Rowena became pregnant this destroyed her relationship with Sally. Rowena travels the world as a translator while Sally stayed at home and became a needlewoman, working in an alterations shop during the day and slowly making a career for herself as an embroiderer.
Their lives come together again when Sally wins a prize for her embroidery and Rowena happens to be in the same hotel.
It's heartwarming and sweet. The fact that the chapters are headed by different stitch names amused me. As I read the proof I missed the embroidery but this would appeal to people who remember embroidery classes in school. It is a sweet story, a good antidote to a stressful day.… (lisätietoja)

Ik vond het een heel mooi verhaal. Ik heb helemaal niets met borduren of handwerken (sterker nog; ik had er altijd een hekel aan). Maar ik was zelf ook een tiener in de jaren '70 en werd door het verhaal teruggevoerd naar die tijd; de intense vriendschap, de lachbuien om niks, de eerste verliefdheid .....
De hoofdstukken wisselen zich af; de ene keer is Rowena aan het woord (ik-vorm) de andere keer wordt Sally gevolgd (in de zij-vorm door een verteller).
