The story begins with a full recap of Volume 3. In this historical genre novel, the author attempts
to introduce many current themes such as immigrants, homelessness, inflammatory speech and pandemics. After Alfred finds out that John has died and he is now the new ruler, much of the book is spent with him filling positions that his brother John had dissolved. In this historically narrated fiction, his successor, his eldest son John, is seen as ill suited in attitude, intellect and temperament to rule a Kingdom. John wastes no time creating chaos. Alfred, the second son, soon realizes that he must find a way to survive. The story would have been more interesting for me if there was more intrigue among the opposing factions.

Excellent depiction of the battle and tension in war. The downfall of the duke was foreseen but not quite as expected, great twist.
I've enjoyed the whole series and recommend it wholeheartedly for those who enjoy historical fiction.
