Tahir grew up in the Mojave Desert in Ridgecrest, California with her parents and two older brothers. Her parents emigrated from Pakistan to the United Kingdom before moving their family to the United States. She attended UCLA, during which time she interned at The Washington Post. After graduation, she took a job there as a copy editor. She currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Tahir's first novel, An Ember in the Ashes, was published on April 28, 2015. The story takes place in an ancient fantasy world where a teenage girl is fighting to save her brother from prison, and a soldier battles to free himself from the regime. The novel instantly jumped to being a New York Times Bestseller where it held the number two spot. Amazon ranked it the best book for May, the best young adult book for 2015, and the fourth best book overall.

Tahir's second novel was published on August 30, 2016 and is a continuation on the story from her previous novel. Penguin Random House describes this addition to the series as such: “Set in a rich, high-fantasy world inspired by ancient Rome, Sabaa Tahir’s An Ember in the Ashes told the story of Laia, a slave fighting for her family, and Elias, a young soldier fighting for his freedom. Now, in A Torch Against the Night, Elias and Laia are running for their lives."

Sabaa Tahir's latest book, A Reaper at The Gates, was published on June 12, 2018. The story follows Laia, a scholar girl, on a mission to defeat the night bringer; Elias, the current soul catcher, tries to learn the ways of soul catcher and Helene, the blood shrike; tries to defeat the enemies of the empire. The novel is narrated in the first-person, alternating between the points of view of Laia, Elias and Helene.

Although "Spark" is better than the other graphic novel in this prequel series, it still just kind of fades away in the mind even as I'm reading it. I was reminded recently at a book event that Sabaa Tahir didn't write the dialogue herself; although she provided the general outline of events, she didn't write this, and honestly? It shows. It's just missing that Tahir pizzazz! The characters lack depth and vigor- I only connected to them at all because I've read (and adore) the Ember quartet and wanted to know more about their past. It's not ~badly~ written, it's just very noticeably NOT Tahir, and that makes me sad.

The artwork is pretty enough, and the colors and scenery are quite immersive! There were also a few odd little details that kinda felt out of place (like the Ikea-looking shoerack inside Nan and Pop's front door?).

The thing is: this just doesn't feel like it adds anything to the "Ember" world. Sure, we get to see Laia and Darin again, and we get teeny tiny LITTLE drops of info we maybe didn't know (or did we?), but there's just nothing to it. I basically read this and thought, "Oh. Okay." which is a HUGE difference from the other "Ember" books I read where I finished and was either a) sobbing, or b) finding myself spiraling into an existential crisis because the book was THAT GOOD.
I'm a diehard Tahir fan, and will read anything she puts out...but maybe in the future I'll just skip these graphic novels and stick to the work she's been fully involved in.

Despite the first third of the book feeling like a bit of a rehash of past plot points at times, I could NOT stop reading, and on the whole this finale was enjoyable. It wasn’t quite what I expected, or even wished for, but in the end felt right. “Sky” is full of heartbreak and angst, but also really beautifully tender moments and a very raw, real sense of what it means to be alive (even if it's a little cliched at times). I don’t want to drag this review out, so I’ll just say that the Ember series means a lot to me, and while I still can’t believe it’s over I’m so happy I got to spend the last 5 years reading and waiting for each new book.… (lisätietoja)

This is a reread in preparation for the final book coming out later this year! Still a fantastic, emotional, high-stakes read that rips me apart at points. :,)

As much as I adore the EMBER series and will happily read them time and time again, this graphic novel just didn’t do anything for me. Although it was kinda cool to see a bit of Elias’s and Helene’s time as Fivers, the mission they were on was so ho-hum; it definitely felt like there were better stories to tell. I wasn’t surprised at any of the plot points, didn’t feel attached to Tavi, and thought the art became very repetitive after a while (all the blacks and jungle greens became one big blur). All in all this was a very low-stakes low-reward read.… (lisätietoja)
