- Magda Szabó (October 5, 1917 – November 19, 2007) was a Hungarian writer, arguably Hungary's foremost woman novelist. She also wrote dramas, essays, studies, memories and poetry.
Born in Debrecen, Szabó graduated at the University of Debrecen as a teacher of Latin and of Hungarian. She started working as a teacher in a Calvinist all-girl school in Debrecen and Hódmezővásárhely. Between 1945 and 1949 she was working in the Ministry of Religion and Education. She married the writer and translator Tibor Szobotka in 1947.
She began her writing career as a poet, publishing her first book Bárány ("Lamb") in 1947, which was followed by Vissza az emberig ("Back to the Human") in 1949. In 1949 she was awarded the Baumgarten Prize, which was - for political reasons - withdrawn from her on the very day it was given. She was dismissed from the Ministry in the same year.
During the establishment of Stalinist rule from 1949 to 1956, the government did not allow her works to be published. Since her unemployed husband was also stigmatized by the communist regime, she was forced to teach in an elementary school within this period.
It was during the years of this involuntary silence that she felt the frames of poetry too tight to express her thoughts and turned to prose.[citation needed] Her first novel, Freskó ("Fresco"), written in these years was published in 1958 and achieved overwhelming success among readers. Her most widely read novel Abigél ("Abigail", 1970) is an adventure story about a schoolgirl boarding in eastern Hungary during the war.
She received several prizes in Hungary and her works have been published in 42 countries. In 2003 she was the winner of the French literary prize Prix Femina Étranger for the best foreign novel.
Her novel Abigél was popularised through a much-loved television series in 1978. Abigél was also chosen as the sixth most popular novel at the Hungarian version of Big Read. Her three other novels which were in the top 100 are Für Elise, An Old-fashioned Story and The Door.

Hard to read at this particular time of 'The Rona.' It was all a bit too true. The altered state of being wrought by stress, war, horror felt too real, too depressing. Nothing glamorous in it. Just unhappiness.
Questo è uno di quei romanzi che mi mettono in difficoltà quando devo buttare giù, nero su bianco, cosa me ne è sembrato: è una storia sull’innocenza e la purezza contrapposte all’esperienza e allo sporcarsi di vita? È un romanzo sull’amicizia tra due donne? È un romanzo sulle differenze di classe e la loro inconciliabilità? È un romanzo sullo scontro tra una donna – la narratrice – che vive di lavoro intellettuale (e che è incapace in quello manuale) e una donna – Emerenc – che vive di lavoro domestico (e che disprezza quello intellettuale)?
Un po’ tutto questo e altro ancora, in realtà: Szabó è un’autrice che può permettersi di parlare di mille temi senza essere mai superficiale. Ma nessuno di questi temi è il fulcro del romanzo, il significato di quella porta che ha dato il titolo al libro. C’è, infatti, una porta chiusa in questa storia, una porta che Emerenc difende con le unghie e con i denti e che ha dato vita a un’infinità di speculazioni da parte del suo vicinato, che vorrebbe tanto sapere cosa si nasconde là dietro.
Ma quella porta rimarrà saldamente chiusa, almeno fino a quando Emerenc non incontra la narratrice, che reputa la persona giusta alla quale affidare il suo segreto, quella vulnerabilità che ritiene inaccettabile mostrare allз altrз, da donna granitica e incrollabile quale è. Sembrerebbe una storia deliziosa dell’incontro di due persone capace di alleviare un passato doloroso, ma non è così.
La narratrice, infatti, non riesce a capire fin da subito la vulnerabilità di Emerenc: perché non basta sapere ascoltare lз altrз, bisogna anche rispettare i loro limiti e le loro convinzioni, per quanto bizzarre e ci possano sembrare. La narratrice non segue il desiderio di Emerenc, ma quello che secondo lei è la cosa giusta da fare: non sappiamo se è per evitare che le rimorda la coscienza o se è il modo in cui avrebbe voluto si intervenisse se al posto di Emerenc ci fosse stata lei. Fatto sta che la sua decisione segna il precipitare degli eventi e anche se il suo errore può essere considerato umano e suscitare la nostra comprensione, perché riconosciamo il passo falso e l’errore irrimediabile che può capitare a chiunque di noi, è stato davvero difficile non avercela con lei.
Questo perché La porta è anche un romanzo su due etiche diverse, due visioni del mondo che si incontrano e si scontrano e, sebbene nel finale non posso fare a meno di propendere per il punto di vista di Emerenc, riconosco che entrambe le donne avrebbero tratto giovamento dal non rimanere rigide nelle proprie convinzioni. The gap between mother and daughter. Young and old. Elderly widow and young love. Tender and heartbreaking. Beautiful on the whole.
This was a very touching read which has lingered with me for quite a few days.
This book is a nostalgia and guilt-tinged story of the special and intense (platonic) bond between two very different women. It is also a story of confession and of a deep desire for redemption.
The story is narrated by Magda, a wealthy novelist who lives with her husband and has just moved into a new appartement. Set in between the 1960s and the 1980, Magda tells us episodes of her life centered around her relationship with Emerence, her housekeeper.
Emerence is a very interesting character, full of contradictions. She is a hardworking, tough and demanding woman, shaped by a traumatic life. She is both extremely rude and very caring. She is extremely guarded and secretive and yet at times, she randomly shares surprising facts about her life.
Initially the relationship is tense and there is a shaky sense of trust which affected by Emerence’s bad moods and Magda’s mistakes. As Emerence opens up and starts revealing glimpses of her painful past, they warm to one and other. Magda realises Emerence’s life has become an integral part of her own. Their relationship is like a tug of war, but they start feeling like they are something akin to family. Until an unexpected event sets in motion an “avalanche of events” which irrevocably change their lives.
This book touches on quite a few themes: Inter-generational conflict, class divide, trauma, small town mentality, religion. It presents the idea of found family in a unique way.
I liked that the sense time feels shaky, at times it is difficult to tell when events are happening, but this also helps create a dream-like atmosphere.
It is a brilliant and very emotional novel which I would strongly recommend to any fan of historical fiction.
What is the titular door? We all have one. Life might lock it for us. But some special relationships might just provide the key.
