About the Author

Geneva Grace Stratton was born on a farm in Wabash County, Indiana in 1863. Stratton attended public schools. At an early age she roamed the countryside and developed a lively interest in nature and wildlife. In 1874 the family moved to the city of Wabash. She stayed in school until she was almost näytä lisää twenty, but did not receive a high school diploma. After an accident Stratton met during her recovery Charles Darwin Porter, a pharmacist from Geneva. He was 13 years her senior, but they were married in 1886. After oil was discovered on some farmland Mr. Porter owned, the Porters built a large house on the edge of the Limberlost swamp, a natural preserve for wild plants, moths, and birds. Stratton-Porter began to photograph birds and animals of the Swamp. Her early photographs appeared in the magazines Recreation and Outing. In 1901 she published her first piece of fiction in Metropolitan magazine. Stratton-Porter made her debut with The Song of the Cardinal. The next story, Freckles, about an orphan who gets a job as a timber guard in Limberlost, became a success. The book was made into a film in 1935 and 1960. During World War I Stratton-Porter moved to California. She wrote editorials for McCall's magazine and founded in 1922 Gene Stratton Porter film company to produce movies of her books. Stratton-Porter died on December 6, 1924, in Los Angeles, from injuries following a traffic accident when her limousine was hit by a trolley car. She was buried in Hollywood Cemetery in California. Her book, The Keeper of the Bees was posthumously published. The book was filmed in 1935. (Bowker Author Biography) näytä vähemmän

This was a surprisingly good read - we bought this book after a visit to the Limberlost some years back, and I hadn't expected it to much to my liking, being what we would now call a "young adult" novel over a century old. But the writing was good, the story compelling and the social background of rural Indiana in the early part of the last century was fascinating. A whole new perspective on the beginnings of the Progressive Era. Recommended.

Deeply wounded by her embittered mother's lack of sympathy for her aspirations, Elnora finds comfort in the nearby Limberlost Swamp, whose beauty and rich abundance provide her with the means to better her life.

This classic novel, originally published in 1904, is set in the Limberlost Swamp in eastern Indiana, a real swamp just north of Ceylon near the Wabash River.

I would consider this a very clean, feel-good Christian kind of love story written for young adults back in the day, but today's young adults would probably find this story utterly ridiculously too sweet and clean.

"Freckles", abandoned on the steps of an orphanage in Chicago as an infant with a damaged black arm and his hand cut off, was an Irish misfit who no one wanted because he only had the one good arm. Trying to find a place for him as he outgrows the orphanage, the organization throws him into an abusive family who traded his good clothes for their own son's rags and beat him. He stole away in the night and didn't stop until he reached the Limberlost, then a thick forest grove in Indiana where the owner, McLean, a Scotsman from Scotland, would see strength and integrity and hire him to watch over the seven miles of timber-line trails around the perimeter for timber thieves.

He overcame his fears and dangers of working in the Limberlost and began to see and care for the living creatures within. He cleared out an area and created a beautiful sanctuary with hundreds of flowers and plants transplanted from around the forest.

Here he would meet and fall in love with the beautiful "Swamp Angel" who was lost in the forest and came across Freckles in his sanctuary. Her and Bird Lady were out to study and capture rare birds and butterflies on film. Their love of the forest creatures was their bond. But, she was from rich blood and he an outcast orphan. When he nearly died from saving her life from a falling tree, she does profess her love to him and promises to find the truth about his family because no one so noble could be from a less than worthy family. And, of course, as it turns out he is from rich Irish blood and the story of his abandonment was not all what he had believed about himself for the past 20 years.
