If you know anything about NYC, you've probably heard about the Bowery. This book gives us a peek into it's history through the eyes of a Christian mission based there. I'm often hesitant to read Christian-based books, fiction and non-fiction alike, but this proved to be one of the good ones. We get to see the changing faces of those the mission helped, as well as those who helped support the mission. An interesting history book for those interested in this small piece of NYC history.

This is a delightful book about the most famous, historically non-denominational, mission on the planet, and indeed, in the most cosmopolitan of all cities and fabled location within the environs of the Lower East Side. One thing I really appreciated in the book was the author's historical background of the mission and its origins in the tireless work of Albert and Ellen Ruliffson, with the financial backing of Louis Klopsch, as well as the powerful voice of The Christian Herald and generous support of retailer/philanthropist, J. C. Penney.

Actually, I thought I knew a lot about the Bowery Mission, but was surprised to read of the breadth of interdenominational participation, including the Anabaptist influence of the Mennonite community of believers (of which the author, a former director of the Mission, is a member).

The individual stories of social redemption (I'll leave boasting of the redeeming power of the gospel to the mercy of God and the evidence of faithfulness in those on whom the Spirit has wrought His influence) are very touching and a treat for the interested reader. One of my favorite of those stories has been cited by at least one other reviewer, so I'll not repeat it: one of the best baptism/immersion stories of all time and, in particular, the challenge by the baptizer to the penitent believer. Thus, I'll not steal any of the author's thunder by anticipating the reader's interest, and so will leave the matter for his own discovery of the book's promise.

The book is quite beautiful in its colorful, wrap-around hardback binding (with a characteristically Bowery dinginess coloration--which any visitor to the Bowery will immediately recognize--contrasting with the bright red title banner and red door). Since the holiday season is upon us, I respectfully suggest this book as a wonderful, thoughtful, and comparatively inexpensive gift. Matter of fact, why not purchase a dozen or more for those on your gift list who are readers, but for whom it may be difficult to find the right present?

Furthermore, while your choice of retailers is personal, please consider patronizing your local, brick and mortar retailer. It will not be long before you'll have no such resource and the few dollars more you may spend now will seem a small price to have paid for the privilege of helping a small business survive in the cut-throat world of Amazon and Walmart.

This book gives a lively account of the development of this famous street in New York City and speaks to the role that the Bowery Mission, a home for the needy and homeless, played in its history. There are profiles of characters who lived in and led the mission. The emphasis is on the workings and culture of what is described as the “lower middle class.”

A very interesting read about the history of the Bowery Mission in NYC. It is heartwarming to read about those who have worked at the Bowery Mission and those who have lived there. So many people willing to reach out to those in need and so many in need. A very well written must read book.
