I could tell as soon as I started that this book was going to give me more enjoyment than the one written by her husband, also about their life living in very remote South West corner of New Zealand. Her writing style is chatty, casual, friendly. (His was flowery and showy). And it looked to be the case early on that this book would be focussed on what it was actually like to live life so far away from roads, people and the conveniences that all of us have.

That was what I wanted to know. What food was cooked, how it was stored, what they bought and what they grew. How often they had to spend gathering or gardening, and who lit the fire and mended the clothes. How you raise 2 kids with no neighbours no car no cot and no plunket nurse! I wanted to know what it was like living where sandflies eat you alive, and where you have no idea when it will be that you see a person that is not you or your husband. This book delivered all that. It meandered into a collection of anecdotes after half way, but that was OK too.… (lisätietoja)
