- Alexander Hamilton Stephens (1812-1883), Vice President of the Confederate States of America; before the Civil War he served as Congressman from Georgia from 1843 to 1859; after the war he returned to Congress in 1873 until he resigned in 1882 to become Governor of Georgia, an office he held shortly before his death.

This is a reprint that was issued in 1872 as a ext book in schools and colleges
This is the attempt by Stephens, former vice president of the Confederacy, to justify succession on constitutional grounds. It rehashes many of the same arguments made before the war, but avoids slavery. The reason I bought the book is that it also includes nice engravings of Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, Andrew Jackson, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.
