Not Saved: Essays After Heidegger Tekijä: Peter Sloterdijk

The online library only functions as a facsimile of the real thing in moments of shortcomings, lapses, gaps. The (metaphorical) Critique-of-Cynical-Reason-epub not being in the (metaphorical) card-catalogue; the much lesser-known work has snuck onto the shelves, and why not.

Though in ostensible opposition with the movement of deconstruction, Sloterdijk appears not unconnected with the tradition, exemplified in a certain sympathetic-antagonistic reading of certain texts. The book contains competent, if not exceptional, essays on the Heideggerian oeuvre with reference to the Sloterdijkian Spheres project, however the most significant insight derives from the perception of "incommensurable euphoria" at the core of post-war critical theory. Intended as a critique of Crtitical-Theory-Gnosticism-Hyperbolics, this recognition (perhaps unintentionally) lays open the movement underlying such [already almost unreadable] projects as Minima Moralia, opening the criticism of certain Adorno-flavored hyperbolics in a new sympathetic mode often already (inappropriately) in wide practice in Nietzsche, and which, at present, may be the most fruitful avenue for their interpretation as living text.

On critical theroy/ gnosticism/ hyperbole:

If one lifts ones eyes from these findings in order to survey the older Critical Theory, then it becomes immediately evident how sharply the dualism between the euphoric and the dysphoric mode is marked in it. Yet to its distinctive features belongs the fact that one may only speak about the dysphoric mode, while the euphoric mode presents a secret that is to be stringently guarded. [...] The Critical Theorist [...] comes into the world with the mission to gauge it for is better possibilities. Because he cannot dare to confess himself to be the privileged memory of happiness and to this extent to be truth incarnate, the critical messiah must choose, [...] the form of indirect communication and help the world to experience itself as untruth incarnate.

Gnosticism [...] First Dramaturgies that incessantly interpret a single fundamental event - the passing of the soul which has been constituted above and outside this world, through the world, and the soul's fate in the stretch of errancy allotted to it. [...] The appeal to gnosticism, rather, arises from the incommensurable experiences of happiness, in comparison with which most profane situations seem unreal, insipid, and unacceptably crude.

There is nothing to be done with intense happiness - it is only accepted as a background of the world against which almost all figures from empirical life appear to be wayward.

The polemic against gnosticism-critical-theory, however, appears to thrust too far forward in what Sloterdijk obviously perceives to be the advantage of having trapped an enemy in a fatal bind:

Critical Theory—like every disappointed idealism—indemnifies itself against the existing through escalation. The antithesis, that the whole is the false, attains its sharpness only from surpassing the already sufficiently exaggerated thesis.
[...]
Perhaps the supposedly critical theory had to be realized as Aesthetic Theory because to its author it was at least indirectly clear that only works of art still endure as spaces for exaggeration, while everything that is merely discourse, theory, and complaint aspires to the cultural center, where what is wagered is taken back and what is acutely intensified is eroded. Indeed, perhaps culture is another word for the taming of hyperboles—

This is the response to "reification/Second Nature" (i.e. the critical-theory description of 'posthyperbolics') with the Nietzschean bend, "but that's how things really are in reality." Perhaps correct, though the argument is not as strong as we would hope. Sloterdijk, aware of this, posits a differentiation between the two, "Posthyperbolics from insight could be a stage of maturity; posthyperbolics from weakness is a phase of the economy." Frankly impossible, however, to say which is which (and that which we might think to belong to one category will perhaps eventually reveal itself to be the trace of the other...)

Though we cannot deny the critique of hyperbole "hits home," the dialogue conspicuously neglects the category of understatement, which, perhaps is equally, if not more, the domain of truth. And it is also possible to conceive the reality of a "gaze of truth" from which even Adorno's "exaggerations" are understatement. From the perspective of our Deconstructivist betters, perhaps they already are. On the other hand, one occasionally wonders why Sloterdijk's project has special elevated place for the work of reactionaries, Cioran, Houllebecq, and perhaps would have the affinity to accumulate a certain popularity among the few of them who can read.

On Revolution Today:

In order to speak of the evidence of the whole, we no longer choose images of the petrified, the congealed, the impervious. [...] We are dealing with chaotic, accelerated structures, with nets and foam, with turbulences and indeterminate drifts, [...] These constructs are too intangible for one to lash out against them, and too complex to be guided by such a primitive movement as a ‘revolution’—a kinetic metaphor, of which one eventually notes how much it remains bound to the era of simple ontologies of solid bodies.

You Must Change Your Life Tekijä: Peter Sloterdijk

The only word I can truly summon for this work that would do it any kind of justice is simply this — magisterial.

Sloterdijk has firmly established himself, in my mind at the very least (which really counts for nil), as the preeminent philosopher of our times. As much as I hate brown nosing I can’t see any other way of describing this book, it seriously is that good. His conception of anthropotechnics, usurped from a rather curt usage circulating around the time of the Russian Revolution, is the summation of all prior technical/practical processes and arduous tasks carried out by the ascetics of history. Ascetics broach a far greater range than just religious mystics or hermits, instead including every individual who attempts to bring about the impossible and somehow make it look easy (athletes, musicians, generals and military leaders, actors, writers, teachers, priests and religious authorities - the list is truly endless). They maintain a vertical tension on ‘Mount Improbable’, paradoxically moving both forwards and upwards simultaneously. Ever since the re-secularisation of the subject from the Enlightenment onwards we have faced an easing and slackening of this vertical tension that is causing mankind to become mere cannon fodder, numerically ordained into various programmes (the forced remoulding dreamed of by Trotsky, the Biocosmists, capitalist globalisation etc.) The question is how we can reappropriate the resources of the past, with their edifices on which they stand effectively laid waste to by now, and be able to go forth without succumbing to ecological disaster and a complete disintegration of the symbolic order.

There’s way too much to discuss in a review here, Sloterdijk practically comes out of the gate like a carnivorous, malignant cancer eschewing ever figure there ever was. His intellectual eye is all-encompassing and intensely scrutinising, picking up on subtle sociological, pedagogical, aesthetic, commercial, religious etc. trends that have shaped the disarray we have to contend with today. This book begs for multiple re-reads and I am more than happy to oblige, a quick summation is simply impossible. Read it, and then re-read it, my review really doesn’t stand up to the colossal project Sloterdijk has only just begun to explicate in outline. I agree, his anthropotechnics stands at the base of a new discourse that will take decades of research before it even begins to cover any considerable ground. Harag és idő

Sloterdijk nagyívű munkája arra tesz kísérletet, hogy a történelmünket mint a tervezett haragirányítás kialakulását ábrázolja. Képzeljük el egy pillanatra, hogy egy személyben valami testi vagy lelki fájdalom hatására nagy mennyiségű harag halmozódik fel. Képzeljük el továbbá, hogy ez a személy diszharmóniát érzékel a világban, mert azt látja, mások nem részesültek arányos mértékben a fájdalomból. Ebben az esetben az ominózus személy késztetést érez arra, hogy haragot zúdítson rájuk, így állítva helyre a vágyott egyensúlyt*. Természetesen ez a magányos haragvó csak korlátozott mértékű indulattal rendelkezik, így erősen korlátozott az a fájdalom is, amit okozni tud – ám ha akadnak társai, akkor indulataikat összehordva nagyon komoly haragtőkét tudnak létrehozni. És itt jön be a képbe Sloterdijk káprázatos analógiája a harag világbankjairól. A haragvilágbank olyan szervezet, ahová az egyének, mint folyószámlára a pénzt, „befizetik” a haragjukat, amivel aztán ez a csoport „gazdálkodni” kezd: különböző objektumokra fókuszál vele, projektekbe fekteti be, vagy esetleg konzerválja egy alkalmasabb pillanatra. Így válik a harag olyan erővé, ami nem pusztán helyi jellegű pogromok lebonyolítását teszi lehetővé, hanem komplex, nagy erejű, országhatárokon átívelő folyamatokat is elindíthat. Ennek a haragvilágbanknak menedzserei és bürokratái vannak, akik befektetőknél határozottabb elképzelésekkel rendelkeznek arról, mit is kéne kezdeni a felgyülemlett tőkével. Másfelől csakúgy, mint korunk hitelintézetei, szeretnének minél több kuncsaftot magukhoz csábítani – és persze meg is tartani őket –, ezért mindent megtesznek, hogy elhitessék az ügyféllel: haragja náluk van a legjobb helyen, mert ők képesek biztosítani a legtekintélyesebb hozamot.

Fejtegetései mellé a szerző történelmi áttekintést is mellékel. Kezdi a kereszténységgel, ami a haragvó Isten koncepciójával és a Pokol elképzelésével megteremtette a korszerű haraggazdálkodás alapjait. Ám egy idő után már képtelen volt megszolgálni ügyfelei bizalmát, mert az egyházak a befektetett haragot kincsként kezelték, vagyis olyan összegként, amit őrizni, nem felhasználni kell – és egyre népszerűbben lettek azok a konstrukciók, akik a haragot tőkeként, vagyis forgatható-mozgatható aktív vagyonként kívánták felhasználni. Ezek közül a legsikeresebb a bolsevizmus lett, amely a burzsoá osztály iránt érzett gyűlöletet valami elképesztő hatásfokkal volt képes egy internacionális rendszerben áramoltatni. Ám ennek a sikertörténetnek is vége lett, a posztmodern kor pedig változást hozott: a haragvilágbankok kora látszólag lejárt, az indulat ismét csak „molekuláris polgárháborúkban” tudja kitombolni magát – a korszak intézményei már inkább az emberi irigységet próbálják tőkésíteni, imigyen magyarázva a szeretettörvényt: szeresd a tárgyakat, amiket felebarátod szeret, sőt vegyél belőlük mindjárt kettőt**.

Összességében Sloterdijk munkája izgató konstrukció, és nagy gyönyörűséget szerzett nekem a Typotex vele. Nem hibátlan: zavart például, hogy teljes elméletét a baloldali totalitarizmusra építette fel, és a jobboldali totalitarizmus szinte csak lábjegyzetszerűen jelenik meg benne. Hiányolom azt is, hogy a koncepcióban nincs szó a populizmusról***, amelynek pedig szintén akadnak elemei, amelyek szinkronban vannak Sloterdijk elmélkedéseivel – de hát biztos nem ismeri a közép-kelet-európai helyzetet (mondjuk konzultálhatott volna velem előtte, és akkor nem követi el ezt a hibát). Ám, ha egy pillantást vetünk az alcímre, látjuk, hogy ez egy „Politikai-pszichológiai kísérlet”, amiben a politikai-pszichológiai kitétel azt jelenti, hogy ez nem történelmi munka, nem geopolitikai jóslat, de nem is szigorúan vett filozófia, a kísérlet meg azt jelenti, hogy előre is elnézést, de lehet velem vitatkozni. És hát kísérletnek valóban nagyszabású. Arról nem is beszélve, hogy Sloterdijk szarkazmustól sem mentes prózája olyan irodalmi minőséget képvisel, hogy még Goethe is megnyalná utána mind a tíz ujját.

* Természetesen az, akire a haragot zúdítja majd, nem szükségszerűen az, aki a haragot okozta. De hát így megy ez.
** A lezárásban Sloterdijk kitér még arra is, hogy vajon az iszlám képes-e átvenni a klasszikus haragvilágbankok szerepét – és arra jut, hogy igazából nem. Meg kell jegyeznem, ezek a passzusok különösebben nem nyerték el a tetszésemet, mert a szerző meglehetősen leegyszerűsítően nyilatkozik az iszlámról – a Koránt például olyan szövegnek tartja, ami a történelmi kontextustól függetlenül agresszivitásra hív fel. Ezzel pár oldallal később ellentmondásba kerül, amikor megjegyzi, hogy az iszlám a 13. századig toleráns vallás volt – ám ha addig toleráns volt, és utána fedezték fel benne az agressziót, akkor mégis van értelme történelmi kontextusról beszélni, nemdebár?
*** Ez ellen fel lehet hozni, hogy a populizmus nem feltétlenül haraggal, hanem inkább irigységgel és félelemmel gazdálkodik, és ennek vizsgálata egy másik tanulmányt igényelne. Ugyanakkor tudjuk, hogy a harag sem homogén elem, maga is tartalmaz bizonyos mennyiségű irigységet és félelmet – bár Sloterdijk nem tesz erőfeszítéseket arra, hogy ezeket elkülönítse, de az olvasó nyilván tisztában van ezzel.… (lisätietoja)
