"The knowable world is incomplete if seen from any one point of view, incoherent if seen from all points of view at once, and empty if seen from nowhere in particular. The essays in this book are meant to illustrate and give character to that universal and fundamental truth."

A remarkable and challenging book on cultural anthropology and psychology. Why do men in US culture barbecue? The question is of the type that makes those within US culture look at themselves. It develops self-consciousness about culture. The author's broad agenda is not to promote normless relativism between cultures but to push readers into uncovering the broad rationality of cultural behaviors. We can understand each other.
