The particular interest here is that the Volga Bulgars, and their succeeding polity of Kazan, were a melting pot of both Western European and Central Asian military influences, including the deployment of firearms before Muscovy. I also found the art plates to be particularly nice. About the only downside is that while the bibliography demonstrates that the authors did their work, it's a shame that there seems to be nothing more in-depth in English that one can turn to for further information.
The Russian Princes went out to fight the Mongols, the next day they entered three hundred years of tribute paying. Sic Transit Gloria Mundi.
