In honor of Children’s Book Week, National Ambassador for Young People's Literature Kate DiCamillo has created "Indies First Story Time Day." She has asked children's book authors and illustrators to volunteer at their favorite independent bookstore on May 17th - to stop by and read a story (a story that they didn’t write) out loud.

Join the Whatcom County Library System for a special presentation at Whatcom Middle School to hear award winning author, Steve Sheinkin, speak about writing nonfiction thrillers for youth. Sheinkin is the author of the children’s books, Bomb, The Port Chicago 50, Lincoln’s Grave Robbers and The Notorious Benedict Arnold. This event is the keynote address for the 2014 Whatcom READS for Kids and Teens community read event. Everyone is welcome. Free! Village Books will be selling books at this event.

Join us for the book launch for Newbery Honor-winner and National Book Award-finalist Steve Sheinkin’s new work of nonfiction. The book follows a group of young African American sailors - many of them teenagers - who are assigned to load ammunition at Port Chicago, a segregated naval base in California. But they are never trained to handle ammunition safely, and are constantly being rushed by their officers. When a terrifying disaster rocks the base, the men face the toughest decision of their lives: do they return to duty as ordered, or do they risk everything to take a stand against segregation in the military?
