1/10/2024 First-read final thoughts: the big critique I've seen from many readers is that ADOFN is slow and not very action-packed until the final third. I think that is something that is totally down to taste and what each personal reader enjoys. For me, I adored how drawn-out scenes and arcs were, and that we got to linger and go along on each characters individual journey. The action is often an inwards struggle, a political situation, or a series of realizations rather than just a bunch of big battle scenes. This book is just like one HUGE bottle of wine that you sip bit by bit rather than chugging down like a sports drink: by the time you finish you're gonna totally be reeling and reveling in everything that was just experienced instead of just getting a single burst of flavor.
If I HAD to pick a favorite, I would say I think I favored "Priory" over this one, but they're both very different! It's tricky to chose, because they complement one another so well! This filled in the history that "Priory" referenced in a beautiful way.

All in all, I loved getting to read this. It's intricately woven, richly imagined, and every character has such a deeply moving story in their own way that, in the end, I found myself connected to each of them (even Wulf lol).

1/1/2024 I've been sitting on this book for 10 months because, once I finally had it, I realized I didn't want to read it and have it be over...finally diving in!

2/27/2023 This comes out tomorrow...

This is very different from what I was expecting to read, yet the whole thing had me continually intrigued about what was going to happened next and I ended up pretty absorbed by the overall plot of "The Bone Season". Shannon really just throws the reader right into the thick of things and the first few chapters feels like running a race to try and keep up with what’s happening, but if given a chance I think there is a lot to enjoy about this book, like the cool magic/power system and the layers of scheming that is happening at every turn.

However, the worldbuilding is a bit underdeveloped, and I was struggling to understand how this world operates. There is also quite a lack of vibes (for lack of a better word) between the two main characters; I wasn't really believing the romance even at the close of the book.

I do think this feels very much like a debut novel, so reading it after “The Priory of the Orange Tree” (where Shannon’s writing is MUCH more mature and consistent) was a bit odd. However, I really wanna know how things end so I’ll be reading the rest of the series!

Despite it already being just over 800 pages long, I would have loved another 10, 50, 200 pages in this book simply to keep it from ending. "The Priory of the Orange Tree" is a standout novel that I would recommend to anyone who loves intricate, feminist, queer, and dragon-filled fantasy stories with plenty of adventure and delightful characters. I would compare it to "Eragon" and "Game of Thrones" for its sprawling world that discusses politics, religion, and again, dragons, over multiple (4) POVs, but at the same time please don't think this is another HBO-esque world of battling families or good VS evil- "Priory" is so much more than that! It's full of heart and hope, it looks at complicated characters who work to balance duty and want, and it's surprisingly accessible for an 800-page book, so don't let that daunt you. "Priory" is a gem of a book and I so hope Shannon returns to this world at some point it the future- I would love to see more!… (lisätietoja)

I don't like medieval court politics so this was not for me. I was very confused when 500 pages in, the main character "hero" slaughters an innocent person while trying to sneak into the castle. Her companion gives her a weird look then nothing is said again. Might the first killing of an innocent make her feel some emotion? I don't know, because nothing is said about it ever again. Imagine Frodo slits a hobbit's throat then goes on as if nothing happened.
