A Wonderful Retelling of Aesop's Fables.......................

Business Fables Adopted From Aesop For Humans Who Work For a Living by Erika Shelby re- incarnates our favorite classic Aesop's Fables. Each story is set with animal characters and are full of humor and satire. And the most exquisite thing about the book is that it gives you an insight into the prevalent business practices. Also, it throws some light on many issues like employee exploitation, malpractices etc. I really enjoyed the book.

Definitely, 5 stars for the book. Thanks to BooksGoSocial and Netgalley for providing me with an opportunity to read and review the book.

I think the overall concept is great - a contemporary adaption of Aesop's wisdom. The drawings / illustrations are lovely. There is definitely a nice bit of humor, although it is a dry bit of humor. However, many of the stories do fall flat. I struggled getting through the book and it is not a very long one. I hate writing non-stellar reviews as I know how much work and thought was put into writing and illustrating the book.

Ms. Schelby presents an attractive combination of historical events, characters, and ideologies to build context for her description of her New Mexico home, of Alexander Von Humboldt’s connection to it, and its historical relationship with Germans. For the most part, she does a descent job. I found myself interested in the historical events that she lays out, the characters involved, and the mind-sets that preceded future events. Her research is thorough, and you can tell she has an excitement for what she herself is discovering. I found myself learning historical tidbits that I never knew.

She mentions in the beginning chapter that “the book leaps through time”. Indeed, it does that. Unfortunately, I found it difficult, at times, to keep up with the many ‘leaps’ that she poses. She starts from an older beginning and moves to a modern end, but the linear flow tends to be sporadic. The analogy I would use is being in a taxi, traveling south down a small highway, and the driver takes multiple off-ramps and side streets, makes a few U-turns, occasionally heads north just to turn south again, and makes a few stops to point out some local features. All this before reaching your destination. It’s not necessarily an unenjoyable ride but we did get lost on some of the side streets.

With that being said, Ms. Schelby provides a descriptive narrative that is insightful, full of well researched facts and connections, and is, at times, poetic. She discusses local, national, and global ideologies that we are not always comfortable discussing and much less comfortable accepting. Creating and expanding nations has always been an ugly business and Ms. Schelby points out some of the flaws in the national and global psyche that leads to the ugly side of that business. But she also has hope and a love for her home that she conveys to the reader.

I won this book through a goodreads first read's contest. I didn't know what to expect when I entered the contest and now that I have read it - I'm still not sure what I read. There were some parts that I absolutely loved, but for the most part I felt like I was missing something. Maybe that's because I don't know much about the corporate world. I feel bad giving this book a not-so-good review, but I just did not find the book to be all that interesting.

My goal with these giveaways is to expand what I read. Perhaps if I read more about the corporate world, some more of these stories will make more sense to me.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is involved in the corporate world - there were some life lessons in there for them (well, for people in general really).

According to the goodreads rating system 2/5 means "it was ok" - which is exactly how I feel about the book.
