This book is an excellent introduction to Australian labour history, stretching as far back as white settlement. It's a scholarly work (if you can overlook the emotive language and the lack of referencing). The author is a labour historian and sociologist, and the work is rife with detail, interesting quotes and facts, surprising for such a small book. Some sections though were a little scattered and sweeping, but that is to be expected. Scalmer even touches on some debates in academic and political circles; is a working class a pre-requisite to unionism; are unions inclusive or exclusive; was the Accord as victory or loss.
An good argument for collectivism, grounded in an historical context.
