Harlow Bishop, presumably the worst witch in the Salem Witches coven, casts a spell that inadvertently drains the entire Boston Clan of Vampires of their blood. In the process, she discovers she has some witch-ly powers, but she’s going to need the help of the coven to fix things with the vampire clan of daywalkers she has unintentionally affected.
Emilio Conte, boss of the clan, realizes the attack was the result of a witch’s spell and he sets out to confront her. Meanwhile, Harlow, desperately seeking to understand what’s happened to her, shares her story of unexpected power with her best friends, Jemma Foster and Frankie Bell.
But when they finally come face to face, the witch and the vampire find themselves drawn to each other.
When, instead of helping Harlow with the protection spell she’d requested, the coven’s high council instructs her to kill the head of the Boston vampire clan, what will she do?
What lies ahead for Harlow and Emilio?
Pairing the central characters . . . a witch and a vampire . . . is a clever and intriguing idea. The characters are reasonably well-developed; Harlow, at first, seems a bit immature and self-centered, but her feistiness comes through as the story unfolds. Emilio is interesting, but quite bossy, setting up what promises to be an interesting confrontation between the witch and the vampire.
The story plays out well, with the plot taking a few unexpected twists along the way. Harlow, both vulnerable and strong, appreciates friendship; her snarky humor is perfect for the character. Emilio is gruff and overbearing, dark and brooding, also perfect for a vampire.
The downside? The author’s extensive overuse of a particularly offensive word. And the cliffhanger ending that many readers consider a thinly-veiled ploy to force them to purchase the next book in the series in order to find out what happens. When nothing in the plot is resolved, as is the case here, it is a disservice to the reader.
The narrative is fun and there is much to appreciate in the telling of this tale. But with nothing resolved, the lack of any closure is likely to frustrate readers.
