Zané Sachs

Another Sadie story I have enjoyed. A weird look at a sadist life as she grows up in a family of strange characters. No wonder her life is so messed up. However, I enjoyed the way the author uses satire throughout the book in order to convey Sadie's life and how it all began. I also like the interesting points the author makes as a list before each chapter which give you an insight to the real Sadie. It is a twisted story with Sadie telling the story and sharing her thoughts. I believe it is supposed to be tongue and cheek. Maybe you will like it and maybe you won't, but please don't take it seriously.… (lisätietoja)

My Thoughts: I was hesitant to read Sadie’s Guide to Catching Killers after DNFing Sadie the Sadist (see our review here). Since I won it I suppose I didn’t actually have to read and review it, but I have a strange condition that makes it almost impossible to not read a book if it’s available to me. So I read this pre-kill.

The characters explained a lot, to be honest. I think quite a few people would end up as sadistic killers if their lives went the same way as Sadie’s. Sadie was much easier to understand in Sadie’s Guide to Catching Killers. I actually felt sympathy for her, in addition to being completely creeped out. Whereas in Sadie the Sadist I was just creeped out and would be scared shitless of her in real life. Her father lived up to being the low-life scum that was alluded to in the part of Sadie the Sadist that I read. I’m pretty sure these books would make excellent evidence for the whole nature vs. nurture argument.

The plot was interesting enough, if not scary. It really does give you the back story to Sadie’s life and explains why she is the way she is. I don’t think a horrible life is a good reason to become a sadistic killer, but the reasoning behind Sadie finally clicked in my brain while reading Sadie’s Guide to Catching Killers. I’m pretty sure Sadie could give Norman Bates a run for his money. You’ll learn more about Sadie’s life growing up and her family (it made me appreciate my family just a bit more).

To recommend or not to recommend? It really wasn’t my cup of tea. It definitely helped me realize that the black humor/horror genre probably isn’t for me. I wouldn’t recommend Sadie’s Guide to Catching Killers unless you already know and like Zané Sachs’ work, you’ve read and enjoyed Sadie the Sadist, you think you’d like to give Zané Sachs’ work a try, or black humor/horror is a reading genre that you like. If none of that sounds like you, then you’d probably be better off skipping Sadie’s Guide to Catching Killers.
