2541 His Own Counsel: The Life and Times of Lyman Trumbull, by Ralph J. Roske (read 11 Oct 1993) Trumbull was born Oct 12, 1813, in Colchester, Conn., was elected Senator from Illinois in 1855, and served till 1873--18 years. They were tumultuous years, and Trumbull started as Democrat, became a Radical Republican, then refused to vote to convict Andrew Johnson, and supported Horace Greeley in 1872. He died June 25, 1896--William Jennings Bryan learned law in his office! He was an interesting character and this is a good book. The book is fast-moving and easy to read, and made me realize what an important man Trumbull was. He wrote the 13th Amendment. This volume is one in a series called "Nevada Studies in History and Political Science" though Trumbull had nothing to do with Nevada.… (lisätietoja)
